Wool is becoming an important fibre in South African fashion — valued for its comfort, strength and versatility. It can hold shape, stay warm, breathe easily and work across many making techniques, from knitwear to felted textiles.

These images captured by at the 2022 Wool Festival show how wool can create texture, pattern and structure in clothing and accessories. Each piece reflects careful making, local skill and a connection to the land where the fibre begins.

More South African designers are choosing wool for its practical benefits, natural feel and long-term wear, supporting a fashion approach that is considered and locally focused.

Thank you to Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, founder of Gift of the Givers, who joined us as a keynote speaker at the Karoo Winter Wool Festival in July.

His contribution brought depth and reflection to the festival, reminding us of the importance of community care, shared responsibility, and collective resilience.

During the festival, Ge**er & Co donated 100 emergency blankets (20% wool) to Gift of the Givers.
This contribution reflects the value of local production and the role the wool industry can play in supporting communities in times of need.

We are grateful for this gesture and for the ongoing work of Gift of the Givers across the country.

South African fashion is embracing a return to natural fibres. Wool, grown across the Karoo, connects design to landscape and material to meaning.

The exhibition Wool World: Beneath Karoo Skies, co-curated by Viviers Studio and Hoven, explores how local designers work with wool to create pieces that reflect both heritage and innovation.

We can’t wait to continue to explore how fashion and design are experimenting with wool in the 2026 Wool Festival! Be sure to be there !

Every fibre of wool tells a story, starting from the farm to finished garment. The Karoo Winter Wool Festival brings this story to life through demonstrations, talks, and hands-on learning.

The Youth Show was a wonderful event to teach the children at the festival how to respect, look after and love livestock. Thank you for your brilliant contribution to educating our young farmers and fibre lovers.

Discover how wool is grown, graded, spun, and transformed into the products we use every day.

The Karoo is calling…

We’re gathering once again under the wide skies of Middelburg for the Karoo Winter Wool Festival 2026 at Dwarsvlei Farm.

📅 3 & 4 July 2026

This festival has become a homecoming — a celebration of wool, of the Karoo way of life, and of the people who carry this heritage forward. Expect the warmth of Karoo hospitality, the buzz of the shearing shed, stories woven in fibre, food, fashion and friendship.

Rediscover Wool. Rediscover the Karoo.

We can’t wait to welcome you back.

✨ September in the Karoo. The air shifts with the change of season, the veld begins to grow, and the sun sets wide across the land.

In these moments, the lambs take over – running, chasing, and tumbling with energy. Their play fills the open spaces and reminds us of the steady rhythm of farm life.

WHAT IS WOOL? Where does it come from?

Wool is one of the world'd oldest textiles.

Wool started being used as a textile approximately 10 000 years ago after the domestication of sheep. Unlike hides that were used alot before this, wool could be shorn again and again from the same sheep making it more sustainable fibre.

Wool is a natural fibre that grows on the skin of sheep (and some other animals, like goats, alpacas, llamas, camels, and rabbits). When we say wool in everyday use, we usually mean sheep’s wool which is often used for apparel, home textiles or technical uses.

We were thrilled to have several merino studs at the 2025 Karoo Winter Wool Festival. The studs are an incredibly important in illustrating the importance of including strong genetics in your flock to ensure superior wool characteristics.

Isabel Frewen () - our wonderful spinner - kept the audience captivated with her phenomenal skills and passion for the home processing of wool illustrating a true farm to fashion story.

Understanding the entire wool story is crucial to appreciating the true beauty of wool!

Be sure not to miss what and get up to next year!
