If you are a fan of South African music, be sure to click on a fascinating new episode of From the Hip with Benjy Mudie, available on all streaming platforms https://pod.link/hip .If you were tuned into South African music in the late `70s you couldn't help but remember a strange but compelling song called "ZX Dan" wafting across the pop airwaves. This tale of a travelling spaceman remains one of the greatest songs in the SA rock universe. Helmed by guitarist/song writer Jonathan Handley and vocalist Dave Davies, Radio Rats remain one of the most independent and enigmatic groups and in this highly amusing episode they wax lyrical about life in the East Rand, why drummers want to be guitarists, drive-ins and the lowdown on the making of the classic " Into the night we slide" album. Please share this information with like minced SA music fans!

I recently had the pleasure of a sit down with Wendy Oldfield for an episode of From the Hip. She has always been one of my favorite musicos, from her days fronting The Sweatband with the legendary John Mair, through to her highly successful solo career. Wendy has continued to make meaningful music on her own terms without kowtowing to commercial pressures and is one of the most genuine and soulful people that I know. In this episode she shares funny antedotes about being on the road with a bunch of wild sweaty boys, the pressures of instant fame and stardom, striking out on a solo career, songwriting as an art form and how she loves to collaborate with like minded musicians. Found a box of photos from my time at Tusk Music that I haven't seen for nearly 30 years. This was taken backstage at the LA Forum just before the Red Hot Chili Peppers took the stage. L-R Benjy Mudie, Dave Navarro, Anthony Keidis, my fellow Tusker ,the late Arnold Mabunda, and Chad Smith. Flea came into the room but fled because there were too many people there. Arnold, bless his soul, had never been to a rock concert before and when the band came out blasting and Flea took all his clothes off and stage dived , he turned to be and said " You mlungus are crazy" !
