Listen to our latest podcast about the Sankomota album over at www.shiftypodcast.co.za

This is the story of Sankomota, recorded by Shifty Studios in 1983 and released in 1984 as the very first album on the Shifty Records imprint [SHIFT 1], Sankomota's debut is a landmark of African music. Blending traditional Sotho rhythms, soul, funk, and rock with profound, often politically charged lyrics, the band created a sound entirely their own—a sound so potent and unique that the apartheid government deemed it a threat and banned the act from entering South Africa.

The story of this album's recording is as powerful as the music itself. As the members of Sankomota (then known as Uhuru) were barred from entering South Africa, the founders of Shifty Records Lloyd Ross and Warrick Sony took a mobile studio in a caravan across the border into the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho.

This album was born not in a pristine studio, but in a makeshift setup, captured against all odds. It stands as a testament to the band's incredible talent and Shifty's unwavering commitment to subverting the apartheid system by giving voice to those it tried to silence.

The OtherWhite Album - The story of The Cherry Faced Lurchers studio album that went missing.

Lloyd Ross and Warrick Sony of Shifty discuss The OtherWhite album, the definitive South African protest rock album recorded by The Cherry Faced Lurchers in 1986, then "lost", rediscovered and remixed during the Covid lockdown!

The album, which takes its name from the ridiculous stupidity of apartheid race classifications at that time is available on all digital platforms on 31 July 20325, the 30th anniversary of the passing of South African music icon, and Cherry Faced Lurchers frontman and songwriter James Phillips.

Friends. I got a call from Ian Herman in January after his house was burned to the ground in the LA fires…along with all his drums and instruments, a lot of them uninsured. For those of you who don’t know, Ian was the drummer I chose to use on probably half on the recordings I produced during the Shifty years. Now, having nothing to play on, he started sending me rhythms he’d bashed out on various found objects, like a toilet seat and a US mailbox. His wife Ashley claimed he’d gone manic. Driven perhaps by the devil of the flame, I guess Ian, not being the greatest communicator via the inter web or telephone, was feeling the need to connect with his larger community. I say this because, judging by the collection of songs he’s just sent me, he’s managed to pull in an astoundingly diverse palette of characters from his vast musical family to feed his obsession with turning a tragic event into a triumph and a celebration.

I’m honoured to have been called on to play a small part as a member this family. Here, I helped Hilton Schilder put down mouthbow and piano on one of these tracks. Thanks here must go to Murray at Cape Town’s Milestone Studio for the freebie. This specific song called “Danger” came out as one of my favourites of this sumptuous, eclectic collection. You can find “Glowing Ash” Volumes 1 & 2 by Ian Inx Herman on your fave streamer, but rather go to https://inxman.bandcamp.com/ to download the two volumes and make a wee donation, so Ian doesn’t have to resort to klapping toilet seats and US mailboxes anymore.

Ian Inx Herman is a drummer and producer based in Los Angeles, CA. Originally from South Africa, he has worked with an array of legendary artists, incl Ernest Ranglin, Abdullah Ibrahim, Hugh Masekela, Noise Khanyile, Miriam Makeba, Vusi Mahlasela, Duran Duran, DJ Logic, Paul Simon, Sikiru Adepoju, S...

Gary Song Of The Day #14
"Heavy Heart" - It is indeed with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to Mnr Purple, concluding our fortnight of Gary-ness. But you shall be forever in our hearts, hearts made much lighter by the knowing of you. This recording of the Kêrels featuring Gary Herselman on guitar/vocal, Andrew Cleland on drums and Gary Sparks on bass was made in 1995 at the OppiKoppi pub, though mixed and edited this very weekend by Lloydie. The visuals courtesy of Giulio Biccari and Brian Green. Our love and thoughts to Suzanne, Kim and the rest of the Herselman family...thank you for the gift of Gary and helping to preserve him over the years. ❤️

Recorded live in 1995 @ OppiKoppi pub in the sticks near Northam, Limpopo, South Africa by Lloyd Ross & Warrick Sony of Shifty Records. Camera work by Giulio...
