Cape Needlefish are such an overlooked prey species. Maybe it's because it's not something generally used as a livebait. But, if you spend enough time on our deepwater points or around super shallow offshore structure, it will soon become clear how ferociously fish like yellowtail, garrick and shad hunt them down. They are not always around in numbers, but these species are hardwired to chase down and kill anything that behaves like a needle fish. The Assegai is probably my top confidence searching lure. If there are predators in the area you will soon know. More subtle than a standard plug and long casting, this thing gets destroyed....💥

What an incredible fish!

🐟 Did You Know? – Miss Lucy (Red Stumpnose)

The Miss Lucy, also known as the red stumpnose, isn’t just one of the most beautiful reef fish in South African waters — it’s also incredibly long-lived, with some individuals reaching ages of 30 years or more.

This slow-growing species is most often found around deep, rocky reefs and ledges where it feeds on a variety of crustaceans, mollusks, and small bottom-dwelling creatures. Their powerful jaws are adapted for crushing hard shells like red crab and black mussel.

Miss Lucy is highly prized among bottomfish anglers, not only for its taste but for the fight it puts up. Due to its slow growth and late maturity, it’s also strictly managed and considered a species of conservation concern — catch and release is strongly encouraged.
