After more than three decades, the Runners’ Guide, at least in its present form, has finally run its course. A new horizon is calling, and I can’t ignore it. But before I step toward whatever comes next, I want to look back with gratitude.

For 35 years, you – the reader, the runner – have carried this little book further than I ever imagined. Thank you for making the Runners’ Guide such an enduring part of South African sport.
To friends at running clubs across the country: your race information was the spine of the Guide. Your help, humour, and patience kept the whole enterprise upright.

To our sponsors – South African Breweries, B*k Madaus, Old Mutual and especially Nedbank – thank you for believing in an idea that was scrappy, ambitious, and just a little bit mad. And to the many advertisers who backed us through the years, you kept the doors open and the lights on.
And then the small, fiercely committed team who made the impossible look routine: The Office - Ann Truter and Sharon Hempel. Warren Thompson, The Artist who gave the Guide its face. Vaughn Cleminson, Riaan van Rooyen and later Charles Burman, The Wizards behind the screens. And Rael Kaimowitz, The Printer who always understood exactly what we needed.
Together we managed more miracles than we had any right to.

Soon I’ll be heading to the UK for a sabbatical of sorts, a time with family, time to breathe, and time to think about what 2026 and beyond should look like. On my return in March, the next chapter will take shape. Road running is part of my DNA, and it will remain at the heart of my work. So this isn’t goodbye. It’s simply adieu – and a thank-you from the bottom of my heart.

Millwood – writing as a healing process

Millwood blends true crime, family history, and personal recovery into a gripping literary narrative. Inspired by the unsolved murder of the author’s cousin, the story follows a decades-long search for truth woven through generational trauma, South African gold-rush history, and the descent into, and recovery from, alcoholism. Part murder mystery, part confessional memoir, Millwood is a haunting, redemptive journey about grief, identity, and the weight of inherited darkness....

Runners Cautioned Not to Believe Fake News About Comrades Marathon Entries

Pietermaritzburg, South Africa: The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) would like to inform the running community that a fake press release is doing the rounds on social media about the percentage of novice runners in the 2026 list of entrants, which is allegedly leading to the CMA considering a change to qualification times.

“While this press release looks genuine, even with our official letterhead added, I can confirm that this is fake news,” says CMA General Manager Alain Dalais. “To begin with, the percentage of novice runners provided in this fake statement, 73%, is massively inflated – the actual percentage of novices in the field is 25.8% – and the second sentence literally contradicts the first sentence, by then saying that only 68% of those novices are running the event for the first time. This entire statement is false, and the CMA is not considering any changes to the qualification times.”

“I would like to call on those responsible for this fake press release, and those spreading other false rumours, to please refrain from doing so, as your actions cause great confusion and unhappiness amongst the running community. The Comrades Marathon has always stood for sportsmanship, fair competition, camaraderie and a spirit of ubuntu, and fake news such as this adds nothing but confusion, anger and frustration,” continues Dalais.

“I also call on our runners to carefully read all Comrades Marathon news on social media, because often there are clues that it is not genuine news, such as in this supposed statement. If in doubt about something you’ve seen or heard, please consult the official Comrades Marathon website – www.comrades.com – and the official social media channels, to verify if we have actually published that news.”
