Pierced on the Side
A Biblical Reflection"
Genesis 2:21 (KJV) recounts the story of God creating Eve, Adam's helpmate, while he was in a deep sleep. God took one of Adam's ribs and closed up the flesh, creating a companion for him.
Fast-forward to the New Testament, where we see Jesus, the second Adam, sacrificing Himself on the cross to save humanity from sin. In John 19:33-34 (AMP), we read:
"But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came flowing out."
This poignant account has profound significance. Just as God took a part of Adam to create Eve, Jesus gave His life, symbolized by the blood and water flowing from His side, to give birth to the church.
In the Old Testament, blood and water were used for purification and cleansing (e.g., using hyssop). Jesus' sacrifice provides spiritual cleansing for humanity.
As the church, our role is to offer help by sharing the Gospel and winning souls for Christ. We were saved to save others. Participating in the Great Commission is crucial; going to heaven alone is not enough.
May we be inspired to fulfill our duty as the church, just as Jesus fulfilled His mission on the cross.
Yours in Christ
