Struggling with low energy? Lockdown fatigue might not be the only culprit.

We spoke to naturopath and nutritionist Michelle Sanchez to find out the dietary and lifestyle factors that could be to blame.

1️⃣ Nutrient deficiency
A poor diet, deficient in key nutrients like magnesium and B vitamins, can lead to fatigue, as your cells don’t have the necessary vitamins and minerals to produce cellular energy.

2️⃣ Sugar overload
Eating too much sugar and refined carbohydrates (bread, pasta, pizza, cakes and cereals) triggers your blood sugar levels to spike rapidly. Even though that will give you a quick energy boost, your blood sugars will soon come crashing down, leaving you feeling tired again.

3️⃣ Excess caffeine
Caffeine overstimulates the adrenal glands and puts the body into a stress response. It can also cause insulin resistance, which means your body can’t get fuel (glucose) into your cells, resulting in fatigue.

4️⃣ Dehydration
Insufficient water intake dehydrates cells, meaning they aren’t able to work efficiently. Seventy per cent of the body is made up of water, and you need to constantly replace fluids lost throughout the day. Aim for a minimum of eight medium glasses each day.

5️⃣ Iron and thyroid function
Low iron levels and poor thyroid function can also cause energy and endurance issues. Iron is essential for energy production in the body, while the thyroid gland controls the metabolism, helping turn food into energy.

The take-homes? Eat colourful plates of food, cut down on sugars, drink less coffee, drink more water, and prioritise iron-rich foods like green leafy veg, legumes, chickpeas and seeds.

This mobility routine, based on NFL strength coach protocol for professional athletes, will keep you supple and strong. 🧘‍♂️

Getting in shape isn’t just about the tonnage you can hoist in the gym.

For starters, how fit are you really if you can bench press an ungodly amount but can’t touch your toes?

Also, consider the muscle-building benefits of greater balance and flexibility.

Both mean you’ll be able to shift more weight through a greater range of motion, which will increase your hormone production and help you build an athlete’s body.

You know that protein is important for muscle growth and recovery, but it can also help you keep excess weight off.

A study at Cambridge University found that subjects who ate a daily diet consisting of 15 per cent protein consumed 1,036 fewer calories over four days than those whose diet was made up of just 10 per cent protein.
