On August 9, 2017, the legendary Lady Liuwa, the lone lioness who roamed Zambia’s Liuwa Plain National Park, died of natural causes just one day before World Lion Day. Her life, marked by resilience and survival, inspired millions and became a symbol of hope for lion conservation.

Poaching wiped out Lions from Liuwa Plain in the 1990s, leaving Lady Liuwa as the sole survivor. For years, she wandered the plains alone, even seeking companionship from humans. Her remarkable journey was immortalized in one of the most moving wildlife films ever.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of African Parks and partners, Lady Liuwa was eventually united with her kind. Though she could not have cubs, she played a vital role in nurturing a growing pride, leaving behind a legacy of survival and community.

Lady Liuwa’s incredible story reminds us of the power of conservation and collaboration. Her memory lives on in Liuwa Plain’s thriving lion pride—a testament to what’s possible when we work together to protect wildlife.

THE IMPORTANCE

Today we celebrate the vital role of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)—safe havens beneath the waves where life can recover, thrive, and inspire hope. In this reel, you’ll see both the beauty and the reality: graceful whale sharks, leopard sharks gliding through vibrant waters… and, in stark contrast, the silence of barren oceans—a reminder of what we’ve already lost.

But there is hope. MPAs give our oceans a chance to breathe, to heal from the pressure of overfishing and human interference. These protected spaces are more than boundaries—they’re a promise for the future. A future where thriving reefs, abundant fish stocks, and iconic species are not the exception, but the norm.

They may be small, but they run a tight ship.
Meerkats are the ultimate desert survivalists – social, strategic, and always on high alert. Living in tight-knit family groups across the dry plains of southern Africa, they rely on teamwork, underground tunnel networks, and a full-time lookout system to thrive in the wild.

From morning patrols to mid-day naps, we got an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at life in a meerkat mob while filming on assignment from . Trust us – there’s a lot more to these little dynamos than just standing upright and looking cute.

Ever heard the phrase “walk it off”? The Helmeted Guinea-fowl takes it to the next level—clocking up to 10 km a day on foot. With their speckled suits, vibrant helmets, and knack for tick control, these birds are nature’s bug-busting, feather-dusting foot soldiers.

Highly social and surprisingly strategic, they roost in trees, call in duets, and even egg-dump when convenient. It’s community living—with a side of tactical parenting.

As the sun peeks over the horizon after Patagonia’s longest night, something ancient stirs—no, not just your morning coffee cravings. We’re talking about the Patagonian New Year: a solstice celebration rooted deep in indigenous traditions and nature’s own rhythm.

It's not just about turning the calendar—it's about reconnecting with the land, honouring renewal, and celebrating with community, gratitude, and the return of light.

Traditions passed down for generations are shared in song, dance, and ceremony, inviting both locals and visitors to reflect, rejoice, and maybe rethink how we all mark a new beginning.

A little windswept, a little sandy, and definitely not impressed — this young Cape fur seal pup gave us serious side-eye while filming up near Kleinzee. With a colony of around 350,000 seals on this stretch of coast, things get loud, crowded, and occasionally dramatic. This one looked like it was just trying to find a quiet patch of beach.

Filming on assignment from , we captured the wild charm of South Africa’s largest on-land seal colony — a world of flippers, fur, and a whole lot of attitude.

Happy Arbor Day!! This giant of the forest is a Knysna yellowwood — one of South Africa’s oldest and most iconic trees. Towering up to 45 metres, draped in moss, and quietly watching over the forest canopy, it’s been here a lot longer than we have.

We spotted this beauty while filming on assignment from . Safe to say, it’s not just the wildlife that steals the show — sometimes the trees demand their moment too.

Built like a tank and just as stubborn — the African buffalo isn’t the type to back down from a challenge. With that boss of a horn structure (literally), it’s no wonder even lions think twice. Whether it's charging through the savannah or holding formation in a herd, these heavyweight grazers are full of attitude and grit.

Filming on assignment from , we got front-row seats to buffalo drama that would make a soap opera blush — and yes, the camera crew kept a respectful distance.

Caught red-taloned! Africa’s iconic fish eagle isn’t shy about making a splash... even if the water’s dried up. This majestic raptor was filmed mid-feast, standing victorious over its slippery catch in the cracked riverbed—a wild reminder that nature doesn’t wait around for perfect conditions.

One stare from this bird and you'd think it’s about to invoice you for the photo op. Filming on assignment from , our crew was lucky enough to witness this moment of raw power and precise hunting.
