CELEBRATING SYRAH WITH A WINTER-WARMING WINELANDS EXPERIENCE AT LA MOTTE

Every August, guests to La Motte Wine Estate in the Franschhoek Valley have the opportunity to experience Shiraz (or Syrah as it is called here) in a variety of ways. As part of the estate’s celebration of National Shiraz Day (21 August) and its participation in Seven Days of Shiraz (21 – 28 August), the focus is on introducing this variety’s unique ability to adapt to terroir, how beautifully it blends and matures and of course, its exceptional versatility as a partner on the dinner table.

Guests are invited to relax in front of the welcoming Tasting Room fireplace or to make the most of sunny days on the veranda with a special Syrah Tasting featuring a beautifully matured vintage from the estate’s Rupert Vinoteque, the acclaimed Pierneef Atelier Syrah Viognier blend, the estate’s flagship red blend, Hanneli Rand a new vintage release, the 2024 La Motte Reserve Syrah.

Moving away from its 100% Franschhoek wine of origin status of previous years, the 2024 Reserve Syrah is a sensational example of how the spicy, perfumed character of cool-climate Elim Syrah complements a creamy texture and red fruit Franschhoek profile. 58% of the grapes are from the Franschhoek estate, 40% from Elim and the remaining 2% originate from Stellenbosch.

Medium-bodied with distinctive varietal aromas and a well-balanced palate, the 2024 La Motte Reserve Syrah is an outstanding culinary companion. Enjoy with rich and flavourful dishes, grilled or barbequed meat and vegetables, aromatic spices as well as fruity condiments.

Guests to L’Ami Family Brasserie on the estate are invited to try the 2024 Reserve Shiraz with a fillet from the kitchen’s open flame grill and Chef Stephan Moolman’s suggestion of either a gutsy peppercorn or the classic flavour of a Beurre Bordelais.

tashas launches Just Ask Tash, a new storytelling series connecting guests with the brand's untold stories

In the new storytelling series, founder Natasha Sideris answers real questions, giving guests a behind-the-scenes look at the people, places and stories that have shaped the brand over the past two decades.

More than two decades after opening its first café in Johannesburg, tashas is telling its untold stories with the launch of Just Ask Tash – a new monthly storytelling series in which founder Natasha Sideris answers the questions guests have always wanted to ask, sharing the stories behind the food, the spaces and the people that have shaped the brand.

Built on the philosophy of beautiful food, stunning environments and engaging personal service, tashas has always been about more than what's on the plate. While a golden thread runs through every café, each one is inspired by a different place or moment in time, reflected in both its menu and design. Just Ask Tash invites guests behind the brand, revealing the stories behind the dishes they love, the spaces they've come to know and the people who have shaped tashas since it first opened its doors in Johannesburg in 2005.

The concept is simple. Each month, Natasha answers a selection of questions submitted by guests. In tashas cafés across South Africa, diners will receive a question card alongside the condiments early in their meal, inviting them to write down something they've always wanted to know before handing it back to their waiter. Online, guests can also submit questions via direct message, comments or weekly Just Ask Tash Instagram Stories. Selected questions will then be answered in a series of short films shared across all tashas Instagram and YouTube channels.

Many of the questions naturally centre around the three pillars that have always defined the brand: the food, the spaces and the people. From the much-loved Chicken Pot Pie and the inspiration behind the distinctive interiors to Natasha's own journey into hospitality, each episode reveals another piece of the story that has made tashas one of South Africa's most recognisable café brands.

Every café tells its own story

The series also shines a light on one of the elements that makes the brand unique: its menus. While every tashas café offers the much-loved classic all-day menu, each location also features its own Inspired menu, which is a curated collection of dishes influenced by the neighbourhood, culture and character of the place it calls home.

"Every tashas shares the same classic all-day menu, and then each café builds a menu of its own, inspired by the place it lives in," says Jill Okkers, Culinary Director for Tashas Group. "We always start with the place, not the plate."

"The drinks are part of the same story, never an afterthought," adds Krystian Hordejuk, Beverage Director for Tashas Group. "Whenever a café has its own Inspired menu, the drinks evolve alongside it, reflecting the same sense of place."

"For years our guests have asked me the most wonderful questions, and I've always wanted a proper way to answer them," says Natasha Sideris, Founder & CEO of Tashas Group. "Just Ask Tash gives me the opportunity to sit down, share the stories behind what we do, and reveal some of the moments we've never spoken about before. I have a feeling the best stories are still to come."

Launching as Tashas Group continues its international expansion across South Africa, the UAE, the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia, with Greece next on the horizon. Just Ask Tash is a natural next step following on from the brand's twentieth anniversary celebrations that happened in 2025.Ultimately, the invitation is a simple one: if you've ever wondered about the story behind tashas, now is the time to ask.

NEDERBURG’S DINNER OF DISCOVERY ENTERS NEW TERRITORY WITH UNCHARTERED

Nederburg is inviting wine lovers to venture beyond the expected with the launch of Nederburg Uncharted, an immersive new sensory experience that will debut as part of the 2026 edition of its acclaimed Dinner of Discovery series.

Building on the success of Dinner of Discovery, Nederburg Uncharted takes the concept into new territory, combining wine, sound, touch, scent and food to create a multi-sensory journey through some of South Africa’s most evocative landscapes – all without leaving Nederburg’s historic home in Paarl.

For the inaugural experience, guests will be taken on a journey through three distinct landscapes, each interpreted through a Nederburg wine.

The evening begins with a curated soundscape and handwashing ritual, accompanied by Cap Classique and canapés. Guests will then be seated for the Uncharted experience, where they will be blindfolded and immersed in specially created soundscapes through individual headsets.

Developed in collaboration with a sound engineer, each soundscape has been designed to evoke the character and atmosphere of its corresponding landscape and wine. The experience is further enhanced by tactile and physical elements: guests may hold a cool, smooth pebble while exploring the West Coast, for example, while vials containing tangible expressions of the wine – such as sea salt and a lime wedge – invite them to engage their other senses.

With sight temporarily removed, the familiar act of wine tasting becomes an exercise in imagination, memory and sensory discovery. Guests are encouraged to experience a landscape through sound, touch and aroma before the wine itself is revealed.

The journey then continues, with guests moving to the dining room for a three-course dinner inspired by the landscapes and sensory impressions encountered during the Uncharted experience.

“Nederburg has always believed that wine is about more than what is in the glass – it is about the stories, places and people that give it meaning,” says general manager, Kate Jackson. “With Uncharted, we wanted to take that philosophy a step further and create an experience that allows guests to connect with wine in a completely different way. It is an invitation to slow down, tune into your senses and let your imagination travel.”

The first four Nederburg Uncharted experiences will take place on 11 and 12 September, and 9 and 10 October 2026, with tickets priced at R795 per person and available through Howler.

The launch of Uncharted marks the next chapter in Nederburg’s Dinner of Discovery journey, but the experience is designed to extend beyond these special events. Following its debut, Nederburg plans to develop Uncharted into an ongoing consumer experience, available to pre-booked groups at designated times and days, subject to a minimum number of guests.

In doing so, Nederburg is creating another reason to visit its Paarl home, and offering a new way to experience the connection between wine, place and imagination.

Nederburg Uncharted 2026

Brookdale Estate serves up The Great Turnabout Winemaker’s Dinner – Thursday 27 August 2026 Brookdale Estate

Brookdale Estate is inviting food and wine enthusiasts to an exclusive Winemaker’s Dinner taking place at The Bistro at Brookdale Estate in the heart of the Paarl Winelands, on Thursday, 27 August 2026. Created as a one-night-only event, the unique dining experience promises an outstanding Portuguese-inspired menu, paired with exceptional estate wines and plenty of informal entertainment as Chef Gary Coetzee and winemaker Xander Sadie exchange their familiar roles for an evening of storytelling, laughter and culinary discovery.

Chef Gary will step out of the kitchen onto the restaurant floor to present the wines, while Xander leaves the vineyards and cellar to join the team in the kitchen. The playful open-kitchen concept celebrates the close relationship between food and wine, while offering a fresh perspective on the creativity, craftsmanship and passion that underpin both disciplines.

The menu was inspired by Xander’s travels in Portugal while he was working in the cellar of Luis Seabra Vinhos in the Douro. Each course will be thoughtfully matched with Brookdale Estate wines, which include interesting blends crafted from Mediterranean varietals.

The evening begins with a Tabua de Pães bread course of toasted baguette with sardines, Bacalhau fritters and marinated roasted red pepper, paired with Brookdale Sixteen Field Blend 2025. The first course is traditional Caldo Verde, a comforting potato and kale soup with grilled chorizo, accompanied by Brookdale Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2024. The feast then moves to Asado ao Forno de Peixe - roasted line fish perfectly matched with Brookdale Bradbourne Estate Blend 2025. Next, Arroz de Pato will be a highlight on the menu, with shredded duck and rice served alongside duck breast smoked over French oak, matched with Brookdale Grenache Noir 2025. The savoury finale is Beef a Portuguesa, featuring fillet of beef paired with Brookdale Twenty Field Blend 2025. The evening concludes with Abade de Priscos, a rich caramel flan bringing a decadent finish to a menu that celebrates the flavours and traditions of Portugal while showcasing the scope and versatility of Brookdale’s estate wines.

As the courses unfold, Chef Gary and Xander will share stories, insights and friendly banter, adding a few unexpected surprises along the way. With its Portuguese-inspired menu, meticulously matched Brookdale wines and informal storytelling, the evening promises plenty of highlights. Seating is intentionally limited to preserve the intimate nature of the event, so early reservations are essential.

The Great Turnabout takes place on Thursday, 27 August 2026 at The Bistro at Brookdale, at R1150 per person, including the wine pairing. Reservations can be made via Dineplan. Accommodation may also be booked at the Manor House at R3525 per person sharing, including breakfast.

Sassy & spicy with Leopard's Leap Shiraz Leopard's Leap Wine

It is often said that Shiraz is a good match to spicy food, but not all spicy food is the same. Between the sweet spice of Bobotie and the hot spice of Thai, where does the affinity of Shiraz lie?

Shiraz is renowned for its exceptional and lush mid-palate and mouthfeel. The grape is naturally full-bodied and known for delivering a rich, mouth-coating, and fruit-forward flavour profile right in the middle of the tasting experience.

With such a magnificent mid-palate, perhaps when it comes to its ability to pair with spice, the middle of the spice world should also be considered. Halfway between the hot spices of the Far East and the aromatic sweet spices that made their way along the Spice Route around the Southern point of Africa, there is the Middle East and North Africa with its fragrant spices such as cumin and sumac.

As Leopard's Leap is celebrating Seven Days of Shiraz from 21 to 28 August, the whole of August has been dedicated to this sassy and spicy variety. Join Leopard's Leap and experience Shiraz in a variety of delicious ways!

Shiraz is an excellent choice for Middle Eastern cuisine, particularly with rich, spiced meats. The wine's bold fruit flavours and peppery notes perfectly complement the smokiness of charred kebabs and aromatic spices like cumin, cinnamon, and coriander. Pair your Leopard’s Leap Shiraz with richly spiced lamb, beef kofta or meaty tagines. For vegetarian dishes, a medium-bodied style like the Heritage blend with 66% Shiraz works well as it complements the earthy ingredients without overpowering them.

Join Leopard's Leap in the Tasting Room to test Shiraz's affinity to spice with a Shiraz & Samoosa pairing. Try the Classic Shiraz and Heritage Blend with two differently spiced samoosas - one hot and one not so hot, but fragrant. Available during August, from Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 -17:00. R180 per person.

Joining Leopard's Leap for a winter-warming lunch on the sunny stoep? It is the ideal winter activity! Come for a delicious week-day lunch, socialise over small plates or enjoy the popular Weekend Rotisserie and Harvest Table lunches. Expect some Middle Eastern inspired dishes and enjoy them with a complimentary glass of Leopard's Leap Shiraz during the Seven Days of Shiraz (21 – 28 August).

JUDGES IMPRESSED WITH QUALITY

The panel, chaired by La Motte’s cellar master Edmund Terblanche, judged the entries over a period of four days from Tuesday 23 – Friday 26 July at Nederburg, Paarl and was assisted by Elzette du Preez, Denzel Swarts (Zoetendal), Samarie Smith-Meletiou and Bertho van der Westhuizen (Alto Estate).

“The single variety Shiraz/Syrah category is where South Africa is really making a statement,” Terblanche said. “Wines were beautifully integrated, handled with a lighter touch of oak and by the final round, the top 30 wines were so close in quality, it really put our tasting abilities to the test!” he added.

“The category for blends was particularly enjoyable; the wines offered a wide spectrum of flavours, combining generosity with harmony” Terblanche said.

He added that although the number of rosé entries were few, they were all young and fresh, displaying the new trend of light salmon and onion skin colour that reflect a dry clinical style.

“The Shiraz SA Challenge continues to raise the bar for South African wine,” concluded Terblanche. “Each year brings new stories, new expressions, and above all, an unwavering commitment to excellence.”

A UNIQUE SYSTEM FOR JUDGING

Since 2018 judging panels have been following Shiraz SA’s unique method of adjudicating entries for the Shiraz SA Challenge. Each judge receives their own individual tasting order, with no discussion permitted during tasting.

This format was devised in collaboration with Stellenbosch University to ensure impartiality and independent assessment and eliminate palate fatigue.

Wine MS, software and support company and a sponsor, has been involved since the competition's inception in 2013 and once again managed the scoring system.

The auditing firm Exceed Group monitored the procedure and verified the outcomes.

The bottle seals for winning wines are sponsored by Lebone Paarl Labels.

The Pebbles Project once again benefited from the customary donation of unused samples.

2026 BERNARD PODLASHUK SHIRAZ TROPHY AND PRIZE

The Bernard Podlashuk Shiraz Trophy and Prize, sponsored by Bellingham, was presented for the fifth time this year with Stellenrust Wine Estate revealed as the 2026 winner. Journey’s End, winner in 2025 and Lomond Wine Estate were the runner-up finalists.

Apart from the magnificent trophy, the winner bags a R30 000 cash prize.

The competition, introduced in 2022 to honour Bernard Joel Podlashuk, the “Father of South African Shiraz”, comprises several levels with detailed questions linked to the criteria for innovation, sustainability, creativity, and social responsibility.

The panel consisted of Francois Haasbroek (Chairman), Dr Etienne Terblanche (Vinpro) and Prof Jako Volschenk (Stellenbosch University Business School).

SPECIALLY CURATED PACKS OF WINNING WINES

Wine enthusiasts will again have the opportunity to acquire curated 12- and 6-bottle packs featuring this year’s Top 12 Shiraz winners, with the five winning blends and one rosé presented in a 6-bottle pack. Kruger Family Reserve Shiraz 2022
Representing the pinnacle of the Stellenview portfolio, the Kruger Family Reserve Shiraz is crafted for those who appreciate wines of depth, elegance and longevity. Matured in small French oak barrels for up to 18 months, it reveals concentrated blackberry and plum fruit layered with black pepper, liquorice and warm spice, culminating in a finish of remarkable finesse and persistence. Reflecting its extraordinary pedigree, the wine has earned an impressive 90 points at this year’s Decanter World Wine Awards 2026 and 91 points at Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge.

KFK Kenzo Faure Kruger Reserve Shiraz 2021
Created as a legacy wine by winemaker Reino Kruger for his son, Kenzo Faure Kruger, the KFK Kenzo Faure Kruger Shiraz 2021 embodies precision, patience and meticulous attention to detail. Matured for 14 to 16 months in French oak, it reveals enticing aromas of ripe mulberry, savoury notes and cracked black pepper, complemented by a velvety palate and beautifully integrated tannins. Matured to reveal remarkable depth and complexity, it offers inviting layers of dark berry fruit, subtle spice and savoury notes, underpinned by refined tannins and impressive balance. A wine that continues to reward with age, it has garnered outstanding recognition, including a Gold Medal and 95 points at the Decanter World Wine Awards, as well as Gold Medals at the 2021 and 2022 Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards.

A grape for every table
Shiraz has earned its place as one of South Africa's favourite red varieties thanks to its remarkable versatility. Equally at home alongside slow-roasted lamb, flame-grilled steaks and hearty winter stews as it is with mature cheeses or simply enjoyed beside a crackling fire, it offers richness, warmth and character in every glass.
This Seven Days of Shiraz, Stellenview Premium Wines invites wine lovers to explore three distinct interpretations of this celebrated cultivar, each telling its own story of Stellenbosch terroir, meticulous winemaking and award-winning excellence.

After all, one week is hardly enough to discover everything South African Shiraz has to offer, but it is certainly the perfect place to start.

BURI OPENS WITH A LEKKER CELEBRATION OF A SOUTH AFRICAN CLASSIC

Every South African knows a good boerie roll. The smell of boerewors on the braai, the soft white roll waiting on the side, the fried onions, the smoor, the sauces, the first bite that is messy, warm and completely worth it. It is the kind of food memory that belongs to school fairs, rugby days, Saturday braais, roadside stops, market mornings and those no fuss moments where simple food just hits the spot.

Buri has opened in Cape Town’s East City with its own take on this South African favourite.

Opening in the first week of August 2026 at Shop 1, 99 Harrington Street, Buri is the newest concept from Neil Swart and Anouchka Horn, the business partners behind Belly Restaurant Group, better known as BRG. The group is behind some of Cape Town’s most distinctive restaurants, including Belly of the Beast, Galjoen and Seebamboes, and is known for thoughtful food, strong concepts and hospitality that feels personal rather than predictable.

With Buri, the idea starts with one of the country’s most loved casual eats, the boerewors roll. Traditionally, it is boerewors tucked into a roll with smoor, fried onions or whatever sauce is on the table. It is humble, generous and part of everyday South African food culture.

BRG is taking that familiar favourite and doing it the Buri way.
At Buri, every part of the roll has been thought about properly. The soft white bun has been made specifically for Buri, created to hold the full experience while still feeling like the comforting roll everyone knows. The boerewors has also been developed especially for the restaurant, with a bespoke Buri boerewors recipe created by Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants. It gives Buri its own flavour from the start, while still keeping the spirit of the boerie roll South Africans know and love.

The menu opens with three standard Buri rolls, each one built around boerewors but given its own personality. The Classic keeps things simple with boerewors and fried onions. The Farmer leans into tradition with smoor, bringing that rich, homely tomato and onion character that belongs with a proper boerie roll. The O.G brings a little more attitude, with garlic mayo, chilli chutney and rocket.

There is also a sauce station, because everyone has their own way of dressing a boerie roll. Guests can finish their Buri with tomato sauce, mustard, chutney as well as homemade BBQ, peri-peri and Buri sauce, the restaurant’s signature sauce.

Once a month, Buri will also introduce a Buri of the Month, giving the team space to play with different toppings, sauces and combinations, as well as showcasing different sausages such as bushpig knackwurst, venison wors, sosatie wors and playful options like skilpadjie wors. It is a reason for regulars to come back, try something new and see what the team has been dreaming up.
Drinks keep the same tongue in cheek spirit with Buri’s Adults Soda Fountain, a playful nod to the classic corner shop counter, but made for grown ups. The drinks offering keeps things lekker and easy, with brandy and Coke on tap, gin and tonic, beer and cider on tap, and the kind of uncomplicated serves that belong alongside a boerewors roll. Nothing too serious, nothing too complicated, just cold drinks, good humour and a proper reason to stay a little longer.

For those who want to go all in, Buri Loaded Fries take the same boerie roll energy and pile it high. Fries are topped with garlic mayo, chilli chutney, rocket and pieces of boerewors, creating the kind of dish that is made for sharing, or very happily not sharing at all.

Dessert keeps the fun going with soft mini doughnuts and a rotating selection of toppings. Think caramelised white chocolate and pecan nut, milk chocolate with hazelnut and Maldon salt, a Peppermint Crisp tart inspired mini doughnut with dark chocolate and Peppermint Crisp, and mini doughnuts dusted in tonka bean sugar.

The result is not fancy for the sake of being fancy. It is a proper South African favourite, done with care, good ingredients and a bit of BRG personality.

Buri is casual, quick and full of energy. It is made for lunch breaks, walk ins, late afternoon cravings, after work bites and anyone who believes that a good boerie roll can be every bit as memorable as a full restaurant meal. It takes something familiar and gives it a new home on Harrington Street, one of Cape Town’s most exciting food corners.

“Everyone has a boerie roll memory,” says Neil Swart. “It is one of those things that is so simple, but when it is done properly, it is brilliant. We wanted to have a bit of fun with that. The bun has been made especially for us, the boerewors has been made specifically for Buri, and the idea is to make something easy, generous and full of flavour.”

For Anouchka Horn, Buri is about the joy of food that does not need to over explain itself.

“There is something great about a really good roll,” says Anouchka. “It is quick, generous and satisfying. With Buri, we wanted to keep that sense of ease, but still bring in the BRG way of doing things, good ingredients, proper thought and a bit of personality. The Buri of the Month will also give us room to have fun and keep things fresh.”

Buri will open in the first week of August 2026 at Shop 1, 99 Harrington Street, Cape Town. Expect boerewors rolls, smoor, fried onions, signature sauces, loaded fries, mini doughnuts and a monthly reason to come back for something new. Buri is open from Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 10pm, with happy hour every day from 4pm to 6pm, when everything on tap is half price.
