[BREAKING] Two more Emfuleni Municipality officials have been arrested by the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team for allegedly taking direct payments to illegally reconnect electricity. Seven people have now been arrested in connection with the scheme.

SEBOKENG - Vaalian Dr Musa Mthombeni and his wife, former Miss South Africa Liesl Laurie-Mthombeni, have once again proved that true love does really exist.

The much-loved couple recently celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary at the same place they went for their mini-moon in 2021, marking five years since they tied the knot in August 2021.

[BREAKING] EMFULENI OFFICIALS ARRESTED FOR POCKETING CASH FOR ILLEGAL POWER RECONNECTIONS

VANDERBIJLPARK - Five Emfuleni Local Municipality employees are behind bars for allegedly running an illegal electricity reconnection scheme.

The employees - from the Revenue and Electrical departments - were arrested in Vanderbijlpark on Friday, 21 August 2026, during a takedown operation by the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team.

It is alleged that the suspects targeted residents whose electricity had been disconnected for non-payment. Instead of directing residents to follow the official reconnection process and pay at municipal offices, they allegedly demanded direct payments to their bank accounts from them.

Once paid, they would then illegally reconnect the power supply, with the cash allegedly never reaching municipal coffers.

The five suspects are expected to appear in court on Monday, 24 August 2026.

Charges of fraud and theft are being investigated.

BISHOP PHOFEDI ACCUSED OF RA**NG A MINOR FAILS TO APPEAR IN COURT

SEBOKENG - Bishop Meshack Molefi Phofedi, who is facing a charge relating to the alleged statutory r**e of a 14-year-old, failed to appear in the Sebokeng Magistrate's Court on Friday, 21 August 2026.

Phofedi was expected to appear in court following a postponement of his previous appearance on 7 August 2026. He did not attend the proceedings, with illness cited as the reason for his absence.

Despite the illness cited for his absence from court, the Bishop has been active on Facebook, broadcasting live church events, sermons and radio shows in which he appears to show no signs of being unwell.

THREE ARMED ROBBERY SUSPECTS SHOT DEAD IN POLICE SHOOTOUT

VEREENIGING – A robbery investigation turned into a deadly shootout on Thursday afternoon, 20 August 2026, when three suspects were killed in a gun battle with police along Vereeniging Road in Alrode.

The incident stemmed from an armed robbery where a man was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money while entering his home. Officers circulated a lookout for the suspect's vehicle.

Members of the Tactical Response Team (TRT) later spotted the vehicle and attempted to stop it. The occupants allegedly opened fire on police, Officers returned fire and called for reinforcement.

The suspects were declared dead at the scene.
