ELECTRIFICATION PROJECT COMPLETED IN SICELLO: MIDVAAL MUNICIPALITY BRINGS LIGHT TO OVER 1,200 HOUSEHOLDS

MEYERTON - The Midvaal Local Municipality has announced the successful completion of a significant electrification project in Sicelo, providing electricity to over 1,200 households. The R18 million project aimed to improve the quality of life for residents by providing access to a reliable and safe electricity supply.

The project involved the construction of new electrical infrastructure, including an 11 kV (MV) and a 420 V (LV) overhead network, as well as the installation of overhead house connections and electricity connections. A total of 1,228 electricity connections were completed across four phases.

The completion of this project not only brings electricity to households in need but also promotes safety and reduces the risk of electrocution from illegal connections. The municipality's efforts to empower local businesses and people are evident in the project's implementation, with approximately 30% of the final contract value spent on uplifting local Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs).

UNLICENSED FIREARM SEIZED IN ZAMDELA RAID

A 42-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, after a coordinated operation by Crime Prevention Group 1 in Amelia, Zamdela, led to the discovery of an unlicensed 9mm pistol with a magazine containing ten live rounds.

According to Sergeant Josephine Rani, spokesperson for Fezile Dabi Police, the team acted on intelligence received about the illegal firearm being kept at a residence in the area. Upon searching the premises, the firearm was found hidden beneath a sofa cushion in a shack.

The suspect was unable to provide documentation to prove legal ownership of the firearm and ammunition, leading to his immediate arrest. He faces charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and is expected to appear in court on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the firearm and potential links to other crimes.
