For many graduates, the graduation ceremony is a moment to celebrate with family and loved ones. But this was not the case for Ms Thando “Teegal” Sokhulu, who had no family present on her special day.
Later, she shared on social media: “The road was hard… What pained me the most is that there was no parent, and no family to celebrate with me.”
After our social media team posted a photo of Sokhulu in tears shortly after receiving her degree, the image struck a chord with many. Touched by her story, several social media users have begun reaching out with offers of support.
Sokhulu, whose only remaining relative - her grandmother - passed away in 2023, said it was heart-breaking to receive her second degree, an Honours in isiZulu, with only her friend, Thubelihle Mabaso, there to cheer her on.
The hopeful graduate, who was awarded a bursary to fund her studies last year, said she is currently pursuing her Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with hopes to securing employment soon.
Hailing from Empangeni, a town in northern KwaZulu-Natal, she shared her dream of furthering her studies to master’s level while gaining practical experience as an educator.
Overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support on her Facebook post - a platform she rarely uses - Sokhulu expressed deep gratitude to everyone who had extended a helping hand and continued to show her kindness.
