The Day the Kruger Held my Breath

Some sightings stay with you forever. After more than two decades in the bush, this ranks among my most incredible moments: three leopards. A mother with her two sub-adults sharing a branch and their story with us.

For 90 unforgettable minutes it was just our vehicle and one other, in one of the busiest parts of southern Kruger. Everything aligned. Timing, light, behaviour as the classic “holes in the cheese” scenario. It made me think of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s "The Decisive Moment"; this felt exactly like that.

I’m grateful I could share it with special people, at a time when I didn’t know I needed this lift.

Wild places keep giving. And I’ll keep waiting for the next decisive moment.

Today Kruger National Park delivered something truly unexpected…

This African Black Oystercatcher (Haematopus moquini) was feeding quietly along the water’s edge – hundreds of kilometres from its usual coastal home. These striking birds are normally confined to the rocky and sandy shorelines of southern Africa’s coast, so a record this far inland is likely an exceptional vagrant and may turn out to be one of the first documented sightings for Kruger once the records are checked.

Jet-black plumage, a bold red bill, red eye-ring and dark red legs – there was no mistaking this bird. Moments like this are why we keep going back into the field: nature always has the power to surprise us.
