ZICTA warns public against sending intimacy messages to children

THE Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) has warned the public not to abuse the internet by sending sexual content to children.

ZICTA Regional manager for North, Chitimukulu Bwembya shared with Kalemba that anyone below the age of 18 is a child and must be protected from child luring, cyberbullying, and harmful messages.

“Anyone below the age of 18, you know, they are children, and they have to be safe online. So you can’t suggest sexual content to them,” Bwembya told .

He cautioned that child luring, cyberbullying, and spreading misinformation are criminal offences under Zambia’s cyber laws, warning that those who prey on minors risk prison sentences.

“Let’s protect our children from child luring. Let’s not share our intimacy with children under the age of 18, because that’s not safe. While you are destroying our future generation, you are also likely to end up in prison,” said Bwembya.

Bwembya tied his message to Internet Safety Month, which runs from February 10 to March 10, noting that ZICTA is carrying out awareness campaigns and a story-writing competition to promote responsible use of ICTs.

“Do not send intimacy messages to children below the age of 18 today or any other day,” Bwembya warned.
