Lulamba Ward Gets Boost with New Water Reticulation Project

By Moffat Siame
Residents of Lulamba Ward received a significant boost today as Honourable Chipoka Mulenga, Minister of Commerce, Trade, and Industry, who is also Member of Parliament for Chingola Constituency, commissioned a new water reticulation project at the Lulamba United Church of Zambia (UCZ) Congregation.

Funded under the 2023 Chingola Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocation, the project was officially commissioned during the induction service for the congregation's new minister, Rev. Dr. Moses Chitundu.

Speaking during the commissioning, Mr Mulenga underscored the significance of the water reticulation system, stating that it will provide a reliable source of clean water for the community.

He noted that Lulamba Ward, being one of the largest in Chingola, had faced significant water challenges in the past, stating that the new borehole would greatly improve the lives of its residents.

Mr Mulenga affirmed government's unwavering commitment in supporting both the church and the wider community by bringing tangible development across the district and the nation at large.

Reflecting on past difficulties faced by faith institutions in developing infrastructure, the Minister reiterated the call for the church to participate in CDF by applying for available programs.

Chingola Constituency Member of Parliament, Chipoka Mulenga, also emphasized that the CDF is not for political carders alone but for all Zambians. He said the church plays an important role in society and should have a share of the national resources.

The commissioning of the water reticulation system marks a significant step in alleviating water scarcity for residents in Lulamba achieved through the strategic use of CDF and a partnership between the state and the church.

Meanwhile, Lulamba UCZ Reverend, Mr Charles Lungu, warmly welcomed the development and emphasized that the new borehole stands as a powerful "symbol of collaboration between the government and the church to improve community welfare."

He described the government's gesture as a clear demonstration of a shared commitment to development. Chingola Municipal Council

ZPL Launches 2025/26 Season Opener with K2 Million Investment

By Mercy Chewe

The Zambian Premier League (ZPL) has launched the 2025/26 season opener Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndhlovu Charity Shield that will involve eight teams with the main sponsor Zambian Breweries unveiling over K2 million investments towards the competition.

The competition branded Carling Black Label Charity Shield will be played over two days at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola with Kansanshi Dynamos facing Konkola Blades and the Women's game will see promoted Super League sides National Assembly and Konkola Blades facing off on 9 August.

On 10 August, Zesco Ndola Girls will face Green Buffalos before the main match between Power Dynamos and Zesco United.

During the launch at Broadway Station in Ndola, ZPL Chief Executive Officer Joseph Chimpampwe highlighted the need to woo more supporters to the local clubs.

Chimpampwe hailed the tournament’s expanded two-day format and inclusion of women’s matches.

“Last year, we proudly introduced the Women’s Super League into the Charity Shield. This year, we are even more excited to welcome our National League Teams into this national spotlight. This inclusion reflects our continued dedication to growing the game at all levels for both men and women,” he said.

The K2 million investment towards the Charity Shield include a K750,000 sponsorship package for the Zambia Premier League, and prize money for competing teams, sports kits, and a national campaign to encourage fan participation.

“Championing sport in Zambia is our way of giving back to the game that gives so much to us. As Zambian Breweries we thrive when our communities thrive. And lives are changed through sport both on a local stage and an international stage. This is not a mere sponsorship, we like to think about it as a partnership with Zambian sport to better lives,” remarked Zambian Breweries Corporate Affairs Director -Tawanda Hojane.

“This is why it’s called the Charity Shield. It’s not just about who wins the match—but who benefits beyond the pitch,” Hojane added.

The tournament will also feature the popular “Change the Game” campaign, which allows fans to vote for the starting 11 players of their favourite teams.

Mining at Senseli remains private as Govt reaffirms Commitment to Legal and Safe Mining Practices

The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development has dismissed reports claiming that it authorized mining activities at Senseli Mine in Chingola, Copperbelt Province.

Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Hon. Paul Kabuswe, clarified that Senseli Mine remains a private operation. He said that the government is engaging with its owners to ensure all activities are formalized in accordance with mining regulations.

Mr. Kabuswe reiterated the government’s dedication to promoting safe and lawful mining practices. He noted that security agencies are collaborating closely to ensure an orderly regularization process.

“The government does not condone illegal mining,” Hon. Kabuswe stated. “We are in discussions with the owners of Senseli Mine to formalize their operations, guaranteeing compliance with safety and legal standards.”

The Minister further explained that Chingola Member of Parliament, Hon. Chipoka Mulenga, visited the mine over the weekend—not to endorse unauthorized mining, but to advise miners on the importance of operating within the law.

In a related development, Hon. Kabuswe confirmed that all illegal miners at KCM’s Nchanga Mine were instructed to vacate the premises last Saturday, underscoring the government’s zero-tolerance policy toward unlawful mining. Security personnel have been deployed to the area to restore order.

The Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development remains steadfast in fostering a well-regulated mining sector that prioritizes safety, environmental protection, and sustainable development.

Family of Former President Edgar Lungu Halts Return of Remains Amid Dispute with Government
South Africa, June 18, 2025
The family of the late former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has announced the decision to halt the return of his remains to the family home, citing growing tensions and breaches of prior agreements with the government regarding funeral arrangements.
Family spokesperson Makebi Zulu told the public today that while initial discussions with government officials had resulted in a joint agreement on the handling of the late President’s burial, the family has since observed several actions that undermined that agreement.
Chief among the concerns is the unilateral announcement by the Road Development Agency (RDA) on June 16 regarding roadworks on the key route from Crossroads to Chifwema a road designated for the state funeral procession.
The family contends that this was done without consultation and directly contradicted the agreed-upon funeral programme.
Further issues arose on June 17 when the Secretary to the Cabinet issued a public statement limiting public participation in the reception of the President’s remains, again without consulting the family.
According to Mr. Zulu, the family was denied the opportunity to determine or invite attendees for this critical moment.
Additionally, a programme was released suggesting that upon arrival at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, the late President’s body would be transported directly to a church service and subsequently to the Mulungushi International Conference Centre.
This plan, too, had not been agreed upon by the family.
Mr. Zulu said despite raising these concerns with the Secretary to the Cabinet who acknowledged some errors; further publications of similar programmes continued to appear.
“For this reason and many more, the family find it very difficult to believe that the government would stick to their end of the agreement and have resolved, sadly so, that the mortal remains of President Edgar Lungu would not return home today.”
The family expressed hope that in the future, the late President’s remains will be brought home and laid to rest in a manner that respects both family wishes and national dignity.
“It is our hope that someday his remains will be repatriated back home and buried.”

The police were notified by hospital authorities, and a scene of crime officer was dispatched to the scene. The District Crime Investigations Officer for Chingola is working on a formal report.

The body is currently at Kitwe Hospital mortuary. Investigations are ongoing to identify the deceased and the individual(s) involved in the altercation, but progress is hindered by the uncooperative nature of the Chinese nationals who brought the body.

Govt, Family Agree on Edgar Lungu's Funeral Arrangements

The Zambian Government has extended the national mourning period by nine days to honor the late Sixth President, Edgar Lungu. Secretary to the Cabinet, Patrick Kangwa, announced that the extension starts immediately and will run until June 23, 2025.

According to Kangwa, President Hakainde Hichilema will preside over the State funeral, which will take place on June 22, 2025, at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre.

During a joint press briefing with Makebi Zulu, a representative of the Lungu family, Kangwa disclosed that the late President's body will be taken to the Mulungushi International Conference Centre from Thursday to Saturday, allowing Zambians to pay their last respects.

The government and the Lungu family have reached a consensus on the funeral arrangements after initial disagreements. To avoid unnecessary drama, PF Acting President Given Lubinda will speak on behalf of the party at the funeral, following consultations between the government and the family on who should speak at official events.

Makebi Zulu denied reports that the family had demanded the dropping of criminal charges as part of the funeral negotiations, emphasizing the family's commitment to honoring Lungu's wishes within the agreed framework with the government.
