SIMUNGOMA RESIDENTS CONCERNED OVER DUST POLLUTION ON M10 ROAD
By Nyambe Mwinanu.
Residents of Simungoma have expressed concern over increasing dust pollution caused by heavy trucks using the damaged Kazungula–Sesheke Road (M10), warning that the situation is affecting the health and wellbeing of people living near the route.
According to residents, the dry and deteriorated state of the road, combined with the constant movement of heavy-duty trucks, has led to excessive dust in the area, reducing visibility and contributing to rising cases of coughing and other respiratory-related illnesses.
Community members say children and households located close to the roadside are the most affected, as clouds of dust continue to engulf nearby homes and public spaces throughout the day.
The residents are now appealing to relevant authorities to introduce stricter speed controls for trucks passing through residential areas and near schools. They have also proposed the installation of temporary speed humps to help reduce the amount of dust generated by speeding vehicles.
In addition, the community has urged local authorities to regularly spray water along the affected stretch using water bowsers as a temporary measure to suppress the dust and minimise further health risks.
Residents say urgent intervention is needed to protect public health and improve safety along the busy transport corridor.
