57-Year-Old Man Found Dead in Suspected Su***de in Chipangali

A 57-year-old man of Dondwane Village in Chief Kapatamoyo area, Chipangali District, has been found dead in a suspected su***de.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba said the incident was reported on April 2, 2026, at around 09:45 hours and is believed to have occurred between 04:00 and 06:00 hours in the hills near gardens in Kapatamoyo area.

The deceased, identified as Patrick Banda, a Malawian national, is believed to have left his matrimonial home around 04:00 hours for his garden, with his wife indicating she would follow later.

However, when the wife went to the garden around 06:00 hours, she could not find him and raised alarm, prompting community members to join in the search.

The body was later discovered hanging from a tree a few metres from the garden.

Police officers who visited the scene confirmed the body was found suspended from a tree, with a piece of polythene rope believed to have been used in the act found nearby.

Police suspect no foul play.

The family has declined a postmortem examination, stating they are satisfied with the circumstances surrounding the death.

Burial arrangements are underway, and the family has been advised to mark the grave for possible exhumation should the need arise.
