Government, President Lungu’s Family Agree on Funeral Protocol

The family of the late former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu and the Government of the Republic of Zambia have officially reached consensus on a series of key conditions for the repatriation, funeral, and burial of the former Head of State, who passed away in South Africa on 5 June 2025.
Family spokesperson Makebi Zulu has stated that the impasse which had delayed the process has now been resolved, and that the funeral will proceed in line with both state protocols and the personal wishes of the late President. Below are the terms both parties have agreed to:
Key Agreed Conditions:
1. Private Repatriation
The remains of President Lungu will be flown from Lanseria Airport in South Africa to Lusaka on Wednesday, 18 June 2025, using a private charter arranged by family well-wishers.
2. Military Reception
Upon arrival at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, the body will receive full military honors in recognition of President Lungu’s status as a former Head of State.
3. Funeral House Protocol
The late President’s body will lie in state at his personal residence in Chifwema, returning there each evening after daily public functions.
4. Public Viewing
Members of the public will have an opportunity to pay their respects at the Mulungushi International Conference Center on:
• Thursday, 19 June
• Friday, 20 June
• Saturday, 21 June
Viewing hours will run from 09:00 to 16:00 daily.
5. State Funeral
A state funeral will be held on Sunday, 22 June, also at the Mulungushi Conference Center, and will include participation from foreign dignitaries.
6. Legal and Religious Tributes
• A valedictory service will take place at the Supreme Court grounds on Monday, 23 June, honoring President Lungu’s background as a lawyer.
• A church service will follow on the same day at the Lusaka Showgrounds, to be led by Archbishop Dr. Alick Banda.
7. Constant Accompaniment
The body will always be accompanied by a family member, late President Lungu’s aide-de-camp, and the late President’s personal physician during all movements.
8. Consultation on Speeches
The government and family have agreed to jointly approve all speakers at official events to maintain harmony and avoid confusion.
9. Party Representation
Hon. Given Lubinda acting President of the Patriotic Front party will speak on behalf of the Patriotic Front, ensuring consistency in the party’s representation throughout the mourning period.
10. National Mourning Extension
The government has agreed to extend the period of national mourning by nine days till burial day on 23rd June, 2025.
Mr. Zulu emphasized that the agreements were not related to any ongoing legal matters involving President Lungu’s family or associates as reported a well known media houses, and stressed that the aim of negotiations was to uphold the dignity and final wishes of the late President.
“We now look forward to a dignified and unified mourning process,” said Mr. Zulu.
“We are grateful to the Zambian people for their patience, and to regional leaders who helped mediate this outcome.”
