ON PERFORMANCE FEES, TRANSPORT, ACCOMMODATION AND PA SYSTEM COSTS: IS IT PRIDE AT PLAY OR LOVE FOR MONEY?

1. Performance Fees

The rule here is that, if you are eating everyone must eat. Invited musicians must be paid for their services where there is an entrance fee. Failing to pay them when you are charging people is tantamount to abusing people. If you can’t afford them, don’t invite them.

For free concerts “still negotiate” with the invited singers. If they accept to perform for free, well and good. If they refuse, pay them or pass. Be honest! You are using their names to have more people at your event. In music circles good Names take long to build and come with a premium. Sounds heretical right, but it’s a fact. Some names don’t come cheap. Yes even in gospel circles.

Even for wedding ceremonies, pay them. You pay for everything else (the bride, food, venue, DJ, PA system, MC) but never the singer (ati freely you received, freely give…awe bane).

Why would singers stop their daily activities to perform at your free or fee paying concert? Think of it this way, your concert is not an emergency or church official program for singers to abandon their productive activities to just come and sing for your guests. Singers may opt to charge for an opportunity cost. Be open to such suggestions.

The truth is that concert attendees don’t pay for the “gospel” per se. No one says “am buying a ticket to go and listen to the gospel at UNZA chapel” they have bibles, pastors and audio/video music🤷🏽‍♂️. They buy to see and listen to particular sound from some groups. Depending on the invited groups (not just the gospel) some may opt out. Why? these groups have perfected their musical art to attract the appreciation of many people than others. For that added value, people pay in appreciation.

Again let’s be honest here, for official church/pure evangelistic programs, almost all musicians don’t charge. They may ask for transport and accommodation and that’s not charging.

They do not charge for evangelistic programs, like, church services, prison and hospital ministries, funerals and any charity events. These programs are purely for gospel ministry no normal singer would charge for such.

2. Transport and Accomodation cost

Singers deserve to be treated fairly. Those who invite sleep in homes with nice queen size beds but want to put invited singers in a class room, peoples homes etc inconveniencing children and families in the name of Ministry? Why?

Our singers by our standards don’t ask for 5 star hotel accommodation but simply decent accommodation. They have families too and monthly budgets like everybody else. Attend to their needs and don’t treat them as gospel tools. They are your co-laborers in God’s vineyard.

We must take care of their movements too. Why do people complain when a group asks for transport money? So if they don’t have money for fuel, how do you expect them to come to your church? Why do you assume that singers are always liquid? They also struggle like anybody else. The minimum we can do is support them with movements. You can plan for these things before inviting any group small or big.

Those last minute Sanhedrin meetings we see at 17:30 to raise K200 transport contribution are embarrassing for God’s people who claim to be blessed with means. Surely a caucus must be called for K700 transport for a big church in Lusaka (the capital City with big cars packed outside), Is the God we worship that poor to be debating K700 transport for a singing group?

Others say “we have serious needs like church building so we can’t pay singers K700”. Hey, why are you inviting them then? First admit that your fund-raising strategy without a good crowd pulling musical group has failed.

That is why you now need singers to attract more people. So singers must be only used as tools to pull crowds so that you raise money for a church building and completely neglect their movements? You think God is happy? How can you love a building more than your own brothers and sisters? Check your priorities.

3. PA System cost

Good sound is everything to a singer. They may even forgo payments but not good sound. In a world of technology, a video clip gone viral with terrible sound can damage the reputation of any group. If you have your own Sound system as a church, don’t assume that it meets the requirements of every group.

Serious groups have dedicated sound engineers and would not risk using anybody else unless they are very sure. The next time you invite a group which puts its foot down on a good sound system, don’t take it personal. Your audience will appreciate after they sing on a good System. Don’t spiritualize everything. Good sound needs a good sound system in the hands of skilled musicians and not faith.

TO THE SINGERS

You can make money from your talents but be careful to go to extremes. It’s not every church which is financially sound to afford all your terms. Be wise, accommodative and at times sacrifice for the good of the souls. Never charge for charity works and normal evangelistic programs because that is your highest calling.

Use concerts to not only entertain but minister to souls. You possess influence that can positively uplift or mislead. After each performance, the fun and all praises take time to introspect and check on who is receiving more of the glory. You or God? Find room to direct all Praise to God if indeed you minister for Him. Fame is like a cup filled with water to the brim. Easy to fill but difficult to carry.

A group that earnestly prays for sucess in ministry, can do exploits beyond the first generation. self exaltation and fame seeking in ministry has short legs. Fame-chasing is chase after the wind because there is always someone somewhere better.

So brighten the corner, where you are🙌🏼
