MWEETWA CALLS FOR PEACE AS CHOMA CENTRAL CONSTITUENCY CAMPAIGNS CLOSE

Campaigns have officially closed in Choma Central at exactly 18:00 hours this evening, in line with Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) guidelines, ahead of Thursday, August 13, 2026 General Elections.

Choma Central has 63,419 registered voters and 87 polling stations, with UPND’s Cornelius Mweetwa and independent candidates Rodwell Nzoolo and Apostle Moses Baker Chakwana competing for the parliamentary seat.

Speaking on Wednesday afternoon during a rally in Makalanguzu following a UPND roadshow in Choma Central, Mr. Mweetwa said Choma has largely experienced a peaceful three-month campaign period.

This is despite clashes reported during last Friday’s campaign activities, when a UPND roadshow in Choma town coincided with a mega rally by independent candidate Backer Chakwana at the New Choma Bus Station.

Mr. Mweetwa called on residents to maintain peace and unity as they head to the polls.

ECZ REVOKES BINWELL MPUNDU’S ACCREDITATION TO NATIONAL RESULTS CENTRE

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has revoked, with immediate effect, the accreditation granted to Binwell Mpundu to access the National Results Centre, citing concerns over public safety and security.

In a press statement issued Tuesday, ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro said the decision was taken pursuant to Section 77(6) of the Electoral Process Act and Paragraph 11(1)(c) of the Electoral Code of Conduct.

The Commission said the decision follows the circulation of a video on social media attributed to Mpundu, in which he is alleged to have made threats suggesting that he was prepared to kill during the election.

ECZ said it considers statements of that nature a serious concern because of their potential to incite violence, trigger public unrest and undermine the peaceful conduct of the electoral process.

According to the Commission, Mpundu had initially been accredited after being nominated by the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP).

ECZ said the nomination was contained in a letter dated July 30, 2026, submitted by the party’s Secretary General introducing its nominees for accreditation to the National Results Centre.

The Commission has since reminded all electoral stakeholders of their responsibility to remain peaceful and abide by the law, particularly as Zambia heads into the August 13 general elections.

It cautioned stakeholders against issuing statements or threats, or engaging in conduct capable of inciting violence, causing public unrest or compromising public safety and security.

ECZ further warned that it would not hesitate to take lawful action against any accredited individual whose conduct threatens the integrity, security or peaceful conduct of the electoral process.

21-YEAR-OLD INONGE MUFANA FOUND DEAD IN SUSPECTED SU***DE

Police in Choma are investigating a suspected su***de involving 21-year-old Inonge Mufana, whose body was found hanging from a tree at a church plot in Nahumba area.

Southern Province Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo says the matter was reported at Choma Central Police Station on August 10, 2026, at around 10:35 hours by a man who was on duty at the church.

Mr Namalongo says the man was alerted by a schoolboy, who reported that a person was hanging from a tree at the church plot.

He says the man, together with his workmates, proceeded to the scene and found Ms Mufana’s body hanging from a tree by a white cable.

Mr Namalongo says police officers who visited the scene found no visible injuries on the body, apart from marks on the neck consistent with pressure from the cable.

The body was later taken to Choma General Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting identification and post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death.

ONE ARRESTED AS THREE FLEE AFTER FOUR MEN ALLEGEDLY BREAK INTO CHOMA’S OLD KABANANA COMPOUND HOUSE

Police in Choma District are investigating a case of house breaking with intent to commit a felony involving four men who allegedly broke into a house in Old Kabanana Compound and attempted to overpower a 27-year-old woman.

Southern Province Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo says the incident happened on August 10, 2026, around 09:30 hours and was reported at Choma Central Police Station at 12:00 hours.

Mr Namalongo says the victim, Margaret Zimba, 27, was at home when she found the four men inside her sitting room, with one of them carrying a parcel.

He says the men claimed they had been sent to deliver the parcel, but Ms Zimba told them she was not expecting any delivery.

Mr Namalongo says when Ms Zimba attempted to open the door for the men to leave, one of them pushed her back inside the house.

He says one of the suspects allegedly attempted to use pepper spray on her, but she managed to escape and raised an alarm.

Mr Namalongo says a neighbour responded and managed to apprehend one suspect, while the other three escaped.

The apprehended suspect has been identified as 40-year-old Joshua Musonda of Chawama Compound in Lusaka and is currently in police custody.

Mr Namalongo says police are pursuing the remaining three suspects and have appealed to anyone with information that may assist the investigations to report to the nearest police station.

AUGUST 13 DECLARED PUBLIC HOLIDAY AS ZAMBIA DECIDES

Government has declared Thursday, August 13, 2026, a public holiday to allow eligible voters to participate in the General Election.

Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa says the declaration is in accordance with Article 56 (1) and (2) of the Constitution of Zambia, as amended by the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act No. 2 of 2016.

Mr Kangwa says the public holiday will give eligible voters an opportunity to participate in electing the President and Vice-President, Members of Parliament, Mayors and Council Chairpersons, as well as Councillors.

He says Article 56 (2) of the Constitution provides that the day on which a General Election is held shall be a public holiday.

Mr Kangwa says Article 56 (1) further provides for General Elections to be held every five years on the second Thursday of August following the last General Election.

Meanwhile, Government has clarified that Friday, August 14, 2026, will not be a public holiday and will be observed as a normal working day.

CHOMA FARMERS DEMAND FOR MORE FRA MAIZE BUYING DEPOTS

Farmers in Choma District are demanding more Food Reserve Agency-FRA maize buying depots to ease congestion and reduce the distance they travel to sell their produce.

Choma District has maintained 33 maize buying depots from the 2024/2025 crop marketing season into the 2025/2026 season.

A farmer from Mbabala Village, TrustNkuluba explained that the depot in the area has only one weighing scale and two sieves, which is slowing down the buying process and causing congestion.

Mr Nkuluba is demanding for an additional weighing scale to speed up maize purchases and reduce the time farmers spend at the depot.

Meanwhile, another farmer from Nakeempa village John Muleya, says although farmers in the area have recorded good harvests, the long distance to the buying point remains a major challenge.

Mr. Muleya notes that congestion is forcing farmers to spend long hours waiting for their maize to be purchased, which could affect the condition of the crops.
