How do I use these 3 organics 🫚: ginger, garlic, and cayenne pepper? I buy them in powder form, and I use them as natural boosters , to cure coughing, improve my chickens' appetite, and remove coldness in chickens. How do I use them? I mix these three organics together in warm water, giving it to them in the morning or night. My measurements are 3 tablespoons per 4L - 1 tablespoon of ginger 🫚, 1 tablespoon of cayenne pepper, and 1 tablespoon of garlic. Even if my chickens aren't sick, these organics can help fight against diseases. I give it to them once or twice a week if they're healthy, but if they're sick, I give it to them for 3 to 5 consecutive days without skipping. If the sickness is severe, I need to take them to the vet for antibiotics.
You can even start to give to them at day 5. Since from day 1 to 4 you will be giving glucose or multivitamin.

Seven 7 poultry rule for your farm

Do you have passion for poultry and really wish to stay long in the business? then . Obey these rules

* Rule (1)
Only order for birds you can conveniently take care of this is the most important rule of all

Instead of sticking 500 birds and the struggle to feed them or give them medication. Buy 200 .feed and give them good medication.

Trust me you'll make more profit than keeping 500 and struggling to feed and give the medication. If this happens. You'll battle with stunted growth recurrent morbidity or diseases outbreaks and high mortality

* rule (2)

Never borrow money 💰 to start poultry business unless you are an expert

Of course. There is no expert in poultry business in fact. We learn everyday every stock you take in will always teach you something different. However. Haven learn from all the different characteristics displayed by each stock. You get to know more and won't be excited when challenges come. You'll know how to handle them without much damage

* rule (3)

Be vigilant ".the little thing you don't take as anything matters if you want to succeed in poultry. You must take it as a really business. Do you know what a business man does every morning when he gets to his store. He pray 🙏. Then open the store and go around to check if everything is in its place he take stock of what he met there and relate with his record yesterday before closing the store. Don't just open your penand start rushing to give your birds feed and water and rush out again. Check around.watch how they behave when you come in .Check what fell and what is no longer in it's place.

Rule (4)

Never ignore warning ⚠️ signals

Yes I call them warning signals

1. bad smell
2. withdrawal from feed
3. Moodiness
4. Withdrawal from water 💧

There are numerous warning ⚠️ signals I can't mention here .in fact they are so many.

A farmer must know how his birds behaves when they see him enter the in the morning. How they behave when he serve them feed.he should know the very active terrors and gentle lambs

If you keep these signals. You'll easily spot when something is not right

Rule (5)
Never change feed indiscriminately
I know you do this .yes.you
When farmer's talk about changing feed from this to this and that then this all in the name getting better results. I'm always scared for them.
Whether you are changing from a bad feed to a good one. You most be very careful.
Do you know every change in feed affects your bird negatively first before gradually bringing in the results you don't desire? Most of the time ⏲ you may suffer withdrawal. Coccidiosis, feed wastage. Stree and more

Imagine changing from mash to pellets indiscriminately. Do you know what that means? Have you studied the difference between mash and pelleted feed and the process of digestion?

They may contain the same ingredients but the formulation process varies so is the digestion process

Note :

I don't mean changing from starter to grower or finisher.but changing from on commercial feed to another. e.g change from chicken/ alam to other brands.

Even whenever you need to change from starter to grower follow the rules 75% starter and 25% grower. 50% grower and 50% starter and finally 75% grower and 25% starter. at the end you change 100% to grower feed . You can follow the same rule whenever you need to change from one phase feed to other. This one works for feed of the same brand too.

Each company use their own unique ingredients to make their feeds although the may give the some nutritional content. Before using any feed for birds. Find out first about the feed and make sure you stick with it

Rule (6)
Never let your birds run dry of water 💧
Have you heard of heat stress? If it has happened to your birds then you'll understand what I'm saying.
Heat stress can wipe your entire flock. and it may leave your birds vulnerable to all kinds of infections as their immune system get weakened and may take more than 14 days to fully recover.
Your birds can survive 48 hours without feed but they can't survive 7 hours without water. Instead of running out of water 💧. Please. run out of feed

Rule (7)

If you can't drink that water don't give it to your birds

Some farmers takes chicken as they are just animals and nothing matters. Maybe they're forgotten they are dealing with delicate live animals.

Waterborne diseases are some of the deadliest disease and most difficult to control. Imagine a tiny drop of harmful substance inside the drinking water. It'll contaminate the whole water. If it was feed it may not be that bad please. If you can't drink that water don't give it to your birds. I'm not talking about medication water.

Basic Steps to Make Silage

Let's dive into silage — a powerful way to preserve green forage for your animals, especially during dry seasons when fresh pasture is scarce.

What is Silage?

Silage is fermented, high-moisture stored fodder made from green foliage crops. It’s preserved in a way that retains nutrients and becomes a highly digestible, energy-rich feed for ruminants like goats, sheep, and cattle.

Why Silage Is Important

Ensures feed availability during dry seasons.

Reduces feed costs.

Preserves nutrients better than drying (hay).

Increases milk and meat production due to high energy content.

Common Crops Used for Silage

Maize (corn) – Best for energy-rich silage.

Sorghum

Napier grass (elephant grass)

Guinea grass

Legumes (e.g., cowpea vines, lablab) – add protein.

Cassava leaves (used carefully, not too much).

Basic Steps to Make Silage

1. Harvest at the Right Time

For maize: when the kernels are milky-dough stage.

For grasses: just before flowering.

Chop into small pieces (2–5 cm). This helps compaction and fermentation.

2. Add Molasses (optional but helpful)

Helps speed up fermentation.

Use about 1–2 liters per 100 kg of chopped material.

3. Pack and Seal the Silage

You can use:

Pit (dug in the ground)

Drum (plastic container or barrel)

Plastic bags or silage bags

Key principle: remove all air. This promotes anaerobic (airless) fermentation.

Line the pit or container with plastic.

Fill layer by layer, pressing tightly to remove air.

After filling, cover tightly with plastic and weight it down (e.g., with stones, sandbags).

4. Fermentation Period

Leave it sealed for at least 21 days, preferably 30–45 days.

It becomes slightly sour-smelling and soft – a sign that it’s ready.

How to Use Silage

Open only the part you need daily to avoid spoilage.

Feed alongside dry roughages (e.g., hay) and fresh water.

Can be mixed with concentrates for better nutrition.

Signs of Good Silage

Smells like vinegar or mildly sweet.

Greenish or light brown color.

No mold or rotten smell.

Understanding Farm Record- Keeping
Managing a farm involves juggling numerous tasks, making efficient record-keeping critical for smooth operations and long-term success. Here are the key benefits:ises, including crop farming, livestock management, and other agricultural activities. These enterprises such as poultry, dairy, or vegetable production represent different branches of farm operations. Effective record-keeping ensures these diverse activities are managed efficiently.

The core of farm record keeping is having a reliable system to store and access data like inputs, outputs, sales, customer information, and more. This data becomes invaluable for decision-making and optimizing farm productivity.

Why is Good Farm Record Keeping Important?
Managing a farm involves juggling numerous tasks, making efficient record keeping critical for smooth operations and long-term success. Here are the key benefits:

1. Simplifies Tax Filing and Financial Reporting
Accurate records ensure a seamless tax season and make preparing end-of-year financial statements more manageable.

2. Facilitates Audits for Certifications, Loans, or Grants
Farm records are often required when applying for grants, loans, or certifications such as organic or fair trade.

3. Tracks Labor and Worker Productivity
Proper documentation helps monitor employee hours, productivity, and payroll management.

4. Supports Crop and Herd Planning
Detailed records provide insights for better planning and decision-making in crop and livestock management.

5. Enhances Marketing Strategies
Analyzing customer preferences and sales trends through records allows for more effective marketing campaigns.

6. Ensures Food Safety and Traceability
Compliance with food safety regulations requires detailed documentation of all farm activities, ensuring traceability from production to the consumer.

7. Informs Sales Decisions
Records help make informed decisions about pricing, packaging, sales channels, and fulfillment options, boosting overall profitability.

Growing Cabbage step-by-step guide: 2025

•Soil analysis
Small-scale farmers seldom carry out a soil analysis of their land. For farmers planting a larger area, a soil analysis is certainly worthwhile. An analysis will show what nutrients are in the soil and what fertilisers are required. Irrespective of what this report says, you should apply nitrogen.

If it is available, use cattle manure; it improves the structure of the soil, stimulates healthy growth, and provides macro- and micronutrients. Manure makes growing cabbages far easier. Apply 30 t/ha to 50 t/ha before preparing the soil. If no manure is available and you do not have a soil analysis to guide you, apply 600 kg/ha of 2:3:4 (24), broadcast it, and work it in.

Soil Preparation

The soil preparation used in producing cabbages does not have to be very fine. Spacing will depend on what size head you require; wider spacing will produce larger heads sooner. The general rule is to space rows 60 cm apart. The in-row spacing should be 35 cm—slightly further apart for larger heads, a bit closer for smaller heads.

Most important are the amount of nitrogen you apply and the timing of its application. The best form of nitrogen for most vegetables is LAN.

•First application: Administer this a week after transplanting. Ensure that it is applied close to, but not touching, the plants. The most efficient method of administration is probably by hand; use one handful of LAN for every 12 plants. LAN can also be applied through a pipe tied into the corner of a fertiliser bag that is rolled halfway down; walk down the rows with the fertiliser flowing out of the pipe, near the plants. If using this method, apply between 150 kg/ha and 200 kg/ha.

•Second application: Administer this two weeks after the first application; it does not have to be sprinkled as closely to the plants. Apply 200 kg/ha to 250 kg/ha.

•Third application: For the third application, use 250 kg/ha, two weeks later in summer or three weeks later in winter.

•Fourth application: A fourth application may be necessary if you have plenty of rain in your area. This may seem excessive, but it is well worth it.

Without sufficient nitrogen, the yield will decrease while all other expenses remain the same.

Pest control

To control pests, start with a pyrethroid spray applied before planting to eliminate cutworm damage. After this, watch the plants closely and apply the right product for the pest. Avoid spraying if there are no pests; it will save you money.
For aphids, use Aphox. For caterpillars, use Tracer or DiPel. These are safe for the pests’ natural predators.

Keep the crop well irrigated.Watch the condition of the leaves and dig into the soil to know when to irrigate. Your seedling grower will advise you on the best variety for the season. If applied, a herbicide should be well calibrated.
