GOVERNMENT EXTENDS SUPPORT TO FAMILY OF INJURED NATIONAL TEAM PLAYER OCHUMBA LUBANDJI

Lusaka, Tuesday, 17th June 2025 – The Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Honourable Elvis Chishala Nkandu, MP, today held a meeting with the parents of Copper Queens midfielder, Ms. Ochumba Oseke Lubandji, at his office in Lusaka.

The invitation extended to the family was part of the Ministry’s continued efforts to provide welfare support to national athletes, particularly in situations where an athlete’s ability to earn a living is hindered by injury sustained during national duty.

Ms. Lubandji, 23, recently underwent a successful Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) surgery following an injury sustained while representing the country at the Four Nations Tournament held in China. Due to this injury, her professional contract with a Chinese club has been temporarily suspended, impacting her income and, by extension, the welfare of her family.

During the meeting, the Minister was briefed on some of the challenges being faced by the Lubandji family, including accommodation constraints, an incomplete housing project initiated by the player herself, and educational needs of two younger siblings currently in school.

In response, Honourable Nkandu assured the family of Government’s support. The following interventions were outlined:

1. Rental assistance for a period of up to six (6) months to ensure housing stability during this recovery period;

2. Material and logistical support towards the completion of roofing works on the family’s house;

3. Educational support for the two younger siblings currently in school;

4. Exploration of employment opportunities for Mr. Lubandji, aimed at providing the family with a sustainable source of income going forward.

Furthermore, the Minister emphasized that the Government is already providing direct financial support to Ms. Lubandji herself, to assist her during her rehabilitation and recovery process.

LUBINDA WARNS GOVERNMENT AGAINST BREACH OF AGREEMENT ON LUNGU REPATRIATION

BY CHANDA MWANGO

Patriotic Front (PF) Acting President Given Lubinda has cautioned the government against deviating from agreed protocols regarding the repatriation and funeral proceedings of late former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, whose remains are expected to arrive in the country tomorrow.

Speaking during a media briefing today, Mr. Lubinda stated that the PF will be present at the reception of the late President’s remains to ensure the family maintains full custody of the body from the airport until it reaches the family residence in Chifwema.

He warned that any unauthorized attempt to access the body will be met with resistance from PF members and allies, stressing that such access would violate the terms previously agreed upon.

Mr. Lubinda further disclosed that the party leadership will lead the body viewing ceremony scheduled for Thursday.

He also revealed that the Tonse Alliance has agreed to deploy additional personnel to join the late President’s aide-de-camp and personal physician, ensuring the body is secure at all times.

The Acting President has further banned political parties and their choirs who in his word were not friendly to the late President, from participating in the funeral proceedings.

ECL FAMILY, VALDEN FINDLEY TO SUE SIMON MWEWA

Chitambala Mwewa whose vlogging name is "Simon Mwewa Lane" yesterday made an urgent video broadcast claiming strongly that he had received information that the remains of Zambia's Sixth President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu will be transported to Lusaka by Lusaka businessman, Valden Findlay's plane.

This is utter falsehood and the family is shocked at Mwewa's continous malicious attacks especially against the late President and his family during this mourning period.

Mr. Valden Findlay also expressed shock at Mwewa's false and malicious assertions.

Four Plead Guilty in Case of Skeletal Remains Discovery

By Memory Bbuku

Three children and a neighbor of a 52-year-old woman from Lusaka's Garden Compound, who was found in possession of her husband's skeletal remains, have pleaded guilty to failing to give notice of the death of George Kalaba.

Kalaba's wife, Silvia Mutaba, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of manslaughter.

This follows the State's application to amend the charges and separate the counts, which was granted by Lusaka High Court Judge Anne Anonuju.

The application was made by State Advocate Laika Zunduna, paving the way for a fresh plea to be entered.
The five had earlier jointly pleaded not guilty to one count of manslaughter.

However, Pretoria Mbadama, Wendy Kalaba, Sandra Kalaba, and Natasha Kalaba are now charged with one count of failure to give notice of death.

Judge Anonuju has set June 20, 2025, for the reading of facts and sentencing for Mutaba's three children and the neighbor.

Meanwhile, trial has commenced in the manslaughter case where Mutaba is accused of causing the death of her husband, George Kalaba.
