SABAO RAMPS UP GRASSROOTS MOBILISATION DRIVE AS UPND CONSOLIDATES SUPPORT IN CHIKANKATA

Buumba Mwiinga June 11, 2026 | Chikankata South

United Party for National Development (UPND) aspiring parliamentary candidate for Chikankata Constituency, Jacqueline Sabao, has intensified her grassroots engagement programme across the constituency as political campaigns gather momentum ahead of the August 13 General Election.

As part of her ongoing constituency-wide mobilisation strategy, Ms. Sabao recently held a high-impact community engagement meeting in Mabwetuba Ward, where she interacted with residents and reaffirmed the UPND government's commitment to sustaining socio-economic transformation and inclusive development under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema.

The meeting attracted a significant turnout of community members who expressed appreciation for the developmental interventions being implemented by the New Dawn Administration. Residents cited various government programmes aimed at improving livelihoods, expanding economic opportunities, and enhancing access to essential public services as evidence of the administration's commitment to national development.

Addressing the gathering, Ms. Sabao reiterated her determination to champion lusumpuko—a local expression for modern and progressive development—through the enhancement of public service delivery systems, infrastructure expansion, and community empowerment initiatives designed to stimulate local economic growth.

She emphasized that meaningful development can only be achieved through collective action, social cohesion, and active citizen participation. Ms. Sabao further urged residents to continue embracing peace and unity as critical pillars for sustainable development and long-term prosperity within the constituency.

"Development is a shared responsibility. Through unity, hard work, and collaboration with government, Chikankata can continue experiencing the transformation that our people deserve," she said.

Meanwhile, speaking during the campaign engagement, UPND official Mrs. Chivube called on party structures, members, and supporters to intensify voter mobilisation efforts as the campaign enters a decisive phase.

She encouraged supporters to remain actively involved in community outreach programmes and voter engagement activities aimed at strengthening support for both President Hakainde Hichilema and adopted UPND candidates across the country.

Mrs. Chivube stressed that the continuation of ongoing development programmes depends on maintaining policy consistency and political stability, adding that electing UPND candidates at all levels would facilitate the effective implementation of government initiatives.

She noted that the enthusiastic reception being accorded to the party throughout the constituency reflects growing public confidence in the leadership of President Hichilema and the developmental trajectory of the New Dawn Administration.

"The support we are witnessing from the people is a clear indication that communities want continuity, stability, and accelerated development. Chikankata is strategically positioned to achieve even greater progress through unity and shared commitment to development," she stated.

And Chikankata Council Chairperson Namasiku Valarie Muyangana underscored the importance of supporting President Hakainde Hichilema and all adopted UPND candidates, arguing that doing so would ensure seamless implementation of ongoing developmental programmes without disrupting progress already achieved.

Mrs. Muyangana observed that retaining the current leadership would enable government projects to advance efficiently and consistently, rather than restarting developmental processes under a new administration.

She maintained that continuity in governance remains essential for accelerating infrastructure development, improving service delivery, and enhancing economic opportunities for local communities.

The intensified campaign activities by Ms. Sabao form part of the UPND's broader strategy to consolidate support ahead of the August polls, with party leaders expressing confidence that the constituency will continue backing the ruling party's agenda for development, economic transformation, and improved living standards for all citizens.

GUEST ARTlCLE: Zambia pays off $1.36 billion debt early

Imagine you got Kaloba from a tough shylock, your name was ruined, and no one would trust you. Then, after years of pindaling and negotiating, you manage to pay off the entire debt early. That is exactly what Zambia just managed to do.

In 2020, Zambia became the first African nation to default on its debt during the pandemic. After years of painful negotiations, that debt was repackaged into a massive $1.36 billion loan due in 2053.

This week, instead of waiting decades, the government did something nobody expected: they bought back and cleared the entire $1.36 billion debt.

To make this happen, Zambia had to deal with a large group of international lenders. At first, a stubborn group tried to block the deal, asking for more money. The government sweetened the offer slightly, convincing over 75% of the lenders to agree. Thanks to a clever contract rule called a ‘clean-up call,’ hitting that 75% mark legally forced the remaining stubborn lenders to accept the payout.

Where did the cash come from? Zambia spotted a cheaper, low-interest loan of $600 million from the African Development Bank and topped up the rest using its own coins.

It is the financial equivalent of replacing a high-interest debt from a moneylender with a friendly loan from your Malume, while using your savings to clear the remainder.

This matters for the ordinary Zambian because it restores global trust in our economy. When investors trust Zambia, they bring Dollars into the country, which helps stabilize the Kwacha and push down the prices of everyday goods like fuel and food.

Furthermore, less money spent servicing massive foreign debts means more money in the long run for CDF, hospitals, schools, and roads.

UPND ALLIANCE EXPANDS AS NEW POLITICAL PARTIES JOIN FORCES WITH PRESIDENT HICHILEMA'S DEVELOPMENT AGENDA

By Vickram emmessa mubita LUSAKA, ZAMBIA.

The United Party for National Development (UPND) Alliance has received a significant boost following the admission of several political parties into its growing coalition, a move that leaders say reinforces the country's commitment to unity, dialogue, tolerance and national development.

Speaking during a ceremony to welcome the new alliance partners, President Hakainde Hichilema emphasized the importance of national unity and collaboration in driving Zambia's economic transformation and sustainable development.

The Head of State stated that Zambia cannot afford to continue entertaining political formations whose primary objective is to divide and polarize citizens instead of promoting development and strengthening national cohesion.

President Hichilema noted that the future of the country depends on leaders and citizens working together in the interest of the people rather than pursuing divisive political agendas.

"Our country's progress depends on our collective ability to unite behind a common vision and work together to improve the lives of our people. Politics should be about solving problems and creating opportunities for citizens, not creating divisions," President Hichilema said.

The President further reiterated that the New Dawn Government remains firmly committed to dialogue and tolerance as essential pillars for accelerating economic growth and enhancing the welfare of citizens across the country.

He observed that Zambia continues to stand out as a beacon of peace and stability at a time when many nations around the world are grappling with conflicts, political instability and social unrest.

President Hichilema attributed the country's continued peace to its longstanding culture of coexistence, mutual respect and commitment to national unity.

He stressed that preserving peace and stability remains a shared responsibility among political leaders, civil society organizations, religious groups and ordinary citizens.

The President also expressed gratitude to members of the UPND for embracing the spirit of cooperation and inclusiveness by welcoming leaders and members from other political parties into the alliance.

He noted that the experience, skills and expertise that the new alliance partners bring will strengthen the coalition and contribute significantly to the implementation of Zambia's development agenda.

"The strength of any democracy lies in its ability to accommodate different views while pursuing common national objectives. The inclusion of our new partners will enrich our efforts to deliver development and economic prosperity for all Zambians," he said.

Joining President Hichilema in welcoming the new members into the alliance, senior party leaders described the development as a clear demonstration of growing confidence in the New Dawn Government's vision and leadership.

The alliance has now been expanded to include the United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia (UPPZ) led by Charles Chanda, the National Congress Party (NCP) led by Peter Chanda, the United Progressive Party (UPP) led by Saviour Chishimba, the Patriotic Front (PF) faction led by Miles Sampa, and the United National Independence Party (UNIP) led by Lieutenant Colonel Henry Muyoba.

The admission of the new parties is expected to strengthen the alliance's national reach and enhance cooperation among political stakeholders who share a common commitment to peace, development and economic transformation.

Political observers have described the expansion of the UPND Alliance as a significant development in Zambia's political landscape, reflecting increasing efforts to build broad-based partnerships aimed at addressing national challenges and promoting inclusive growth.

Alliance leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fostering unity among citizens regardless of political affiliation, ethnicity or region, stating that Zambia's development can only be achieved through collective action and shared responsibility.

As the alliance continues to grow, its leaders maintain that their focus remains on delivering meaningful development, creating jobs, improving livelihoods and ensuring that the benefits of economic growth reach every part of the country.

Together, the UPND Alliance and its new partners have pledged to continue working towards a united, peaceful and prosperous Zambia where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to national progress.

MONGU, WESTERN PROVINCE

Residents of Lewanika Compound and surrounding areas in Namushekendi Ward have reaffirmed their strong support for the United Party for National Development (UPND) and its candidates ahead of the August 13, 2026 General Election.

The declaration was made during a highly attended community engagement meeting held in Lewanika Compound, where residents turned out in large numbers to interact with UPND officials and aspiring candidates.
Addressing the gathering, UPND leaders urged voters to rally behind the ruling party and support President Hakainde Hichilema's development agenda by voting for all candidates on the UPND ticket.

The meeting saw residents openly endorse aspiring Mongu East Member of Parliament Mubita C. Nawa, Mayoral candidate Siwasanyambe Mubiana, and Council Chairperson candidate Hon. Mainza. Community members pledged overwhelming support for the candidates, describing them as leaders capable of advancing development and addressing long-standing challenges affecting the area.

The residents further expressed confidence in President Hichilema's leadership, praising the New Dawn Government's efforts to improve the welfare of citizens across the country. They stated that the President's vision for economic transformation, infrastructure development, and improved service delivery aligns with the aspirations of the people of Mongu East.
In a symbolic show of unity and commitment, community representatives reportedly pledged 100 percent of their votes to the UPND candidates. The pledge was formally presented to the campaign team led by Mr. Ndopu Ndopu, the UPND Mongu District Vice Chairman for Politics.

Earlier, Mr. Ndopu conducted a tour of Kashokoto Area in Namushekendi Ward as part of the party's grassroots mobilization campaign aimed at drumming up support for the UPND adopted candidates ahead of the elections.

Speaking during the tour, Mr. Ndopu called on residents to remain united and continue supporting the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema. He emphasized the importance of voting for all candidates on the UPND ticket to ensure coordinated development from the local level up to the national level.

"The development agenda of President Hakainde Hichilema can only be fully realized if voters support the entire UPND team. We are encouraging our people to vote for the President, the Member of Parliament, the Mayor, and the Council Chairperson on the same ticket," he said.

During the interaction, residents raised concerns over several challenges affecting their communities, including poor road infrastructure, inadequate access to safe and clean drinking water, and limited electricity connectivity.

Community members appealed to the government and aspiring leaders to prioritize these issues once elected, noting that the lack of basic services has negatively affected economic activities and living standards in the area.

Responding to the concerns, Mr. Ndopu assured residents that the challenges they were facing would soon become a thing of the past if they elected the UPND candidates in the forthcoming elections.

He expressed confidence that the UPND team seeking office in Mongu East possessed the capacity and commitment to address the developmental needs of the people.
"The problems of bad roads, unsafe water, and electricity shortages are temporary. The team you will elect on August 13 is committed to ensuring that these challenges are addressed as quickly as possible. We want to bring meaningful and lasting development to every corner of Mongu East," he said.

Mr. Ndopu further urged voters not to be distracted by opposition rhetoric, but instead focus on supporting leaders who understand the vision of President Hichilema and are prepared to work closely with government to deliver development.

As the election campaign gathers momentum, UPND officials say they remain encouraged by the growing support being demonstrated across communities in Mongu East Constituency, expressing optimism that the party will secure a decisive victory in the upcoming polls.

Elisha Matambo, has called on residents of Lufwanyama District to support President Hakainde Hichilema and all UPND candidates in the forthcoming August 13, 2026 General Election.

Speaking during voter engagement meetings in Masasa Area of Mibenge Ward in Lufwanyama East Constituency, Hon. Matambo described the upcoming election as a critical moment that will determine the future of children and generations to come.

He told residents that the election presents an opportunity for citizens to choose leaders who are committed to improving livelihoods and sustaining the development agenda that has been implemented under President Hichilema's administration.

Hon. Matambo praised President Hichilema for introducing the free education policy, which he said has transformed access to education across the country and has since been entrenched in the Constitution.

"The forthcoming General Election is a very important day that will determine the destiny of our children and the future of our communities. President Hakainde Hichilema is the only leader with a clear vision and a genuine heart for the Zambian people. His introduction of free education has given hope to thousands of families and secured the future of our children," he said.

The parliamentary hopeful assured residents that, once elected as Member of Parliament for Lufwanyama East Constituency, he would prioritize addressing key developmental challenges affecting the area.

He outlined plans to increase access to clean water by sinking more boreholes, improve healthcare services through the construction of additional health facilities, and expand educational infrastructure by building more schools.

Hon. Matambo further pledged to support the agricultural sector, particularly by advocating for an increase in the number of input packs distributed to farmers under the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP).

He emphasized that agriculture remains the backbone of many households in Lufwanyama and that strengthening support to farmers would contribute significantly to economic growth and food security.

The UPND candidate also commended the government for dividing Lufwanyama into two constituencies, namely Lufwanyama East and Lufwanyama West, stating that the move would bring development closer to the people and improve service delivery.

He said the creation of the two constituencies demonstrates government's commitment to decentralization and equitable development.

"We applaud President Hichilema and the government for creating Lufwanyama East and Lufwanyama West constituencies. This decision will ensure that development reaches every corner of our district and that communities receive the attention they deserve," he said.

Hon. Matambo assured residents that his leadership would be guided by consultation, transparency, and service to the people.

He pledged to work closely with local communities in identifying and implementing development projects that respond directly to their needs and aspirations.

On economic empowerment, the aspiring lawmaker highlighted the opportunities available under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), particularly for women and young people.

He encouraged residents to form cooperatives to enhance their chances of accessing empowerment grants, loans, and other support programmes being provided by government through CDF.

Hon. Matambo said his office would ensure that the people of Lufwanyama East fully benefit from the various empowerment initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods and creating sustainable economic opportunities.

Meanwhile, the UPND candidate also conducted voter engagement meetings in Kamipundu and Mibenge areas within Mibenge Ward, where he thanked residents for turning up in large numbers.

By Varshaly muleya CHIPATA .

President Hakainde Hichilema has urged United Party for National Development (UPND) members in Eastern Province to put aside differences and work together to secure victory in the August 13 elections.

Addressing party structures and candidates contesting parliamentary, mayoral, council chairperson and councillor positions in the province yesterday, President Hichilema stressed the importance of unity, including embracing members who were unsuccessful during the party adoption process.
The President said a united party would be better positioned to deliver on its development agenda and continue implementing programmes aimed at improving the lives of Zambians.

"We encouraged our candidates to unite with everyone in the party, including those who were not selected during the adoption process," President Hichilema said.
He added that the ruling party's vision for continued national development would require collective effort and a decisive electoral mandate from voters.

"Our commitment to continue delivering development across the country can only be achieved if we work hard and as one team to secure a strong victory in the August 13 elections," he said.

President Hichilema also hailed Eastern Province as a key contributor to Zambia's economy, particularly through agriculture, which remains one of the country's most important sectors.
Describing the province as an agricultural hub, the Head of State congratulated farmers on what is projected to be another bumper harvest, attributing the anticipated success to the hard work and resilience of the farming community.

"As an agricultural hub, Eastern Province is vital to our nation's economy. Congratulations to all our farmers for what is expected to be another record harvest," he said.
