LAZ APPLAUDS HICHILEMA FOR WITHHOLDING ASSENT TO PUBLIC GATHERINGS BILL

The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has welcomed President Hakainde Hichilema’s decision to withhold assent to the Public Gatherings Bill No. 71 of 2026 and refer it back to Parliament for further consideration.

In a statement, LAZ said the President’s action reflects a commitment to upholding constitutional principles, democratic governance, and the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms.

LAZ President Arnold Kaluba stated that the association had previously opposed the enactment of the Bill due to constitutional and human rights concerns raised by several of its provisions.

Mr. Kaluba commended President Hichilema for taking into account submissions and concerns raised by LAZ and other stakeholders.

🚨 Ten days ago, Trump said he was "in no hurry" to make a deal with Iran claiming that rushing would cost him a good deal.

Then on Tuesday he was promised a deal in "two or three days."

On Wednesday he was screaming on Truth Social that Iran took too long and must pay the price.

On that SAME Wednesday post, he declared Iran's military a complete and total mess, that their Navy and Air Force don't even exist anymore and Iran is all talk, no action.

Yet on June 9th, Iran, using Chinese-made aerial defense systems shot down a US Army Apache helicopter patrolling the Hormuz.

Iran then launched retaliatory drone and missile strikes hitting US military bases across Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait.

American jets have not entered Iranian airspace in over 3 months.

CENTCOM subsequently launched "self-defense strikes" against Iranian air defense sites, radar installations, and ground control stations, the very systems Trump declared no longer exist.

Iran is doing all this while under a US naval blockade with frozen assets, after 3+ months of US-Israeli strikes.

JPMorgan estimates 2 million barrels of Iranian oil are still sneaking through Hormuz daily with transponders off.

The blockade is leaking.

The war is in its 4th month.

A country Trump declared "completely defeated" is still controlling its airspace, striking US allies across the Middle East, and bringing down American aircraft.

That is not the posture of someone winning.

History will remember who controlled the Strait, not the midnight Truth Social posts.

‎An opposition leader has launched a sharp attack on former heads of government, challenging them to explain why they want to return to power after leaving the country deep in debt.
‎
Charles Chanda, leader of the United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia – or UPPZ – which is part of the UPND alliance, says the previous administration’s claims of building roads and airports do not impress him.

He argues those projects were funded by borrowed money with no plan to repay.
‎
‎In a live video posted on his official page on Saturday, Mr. Chanda accused former leaders of running up huge loans without thinking about the consequences.
‎
‎“You left us in debt distress,” he said. “Now you want to come back into government? Explain to Zambians why we should trust you again.”
‎
‎Mr. Chanda singled out claims by past officials that they had built infrastructure like roads, bridges and international airports. He said those were not achievements but liabilities.
‎
‎“Even claiming building roads and airports does not sit well with me,” he said. “That was done using borrowed money. There was no payback plan. So who suffers? The people of Zambia.”
‎
‎He added that the current administration under President Hakainde Hichilema is the one left to repay those loans. Therefore, he argued, the Hichilema government should take full credit for completing or maintaining any projects inherited from the previous era.
‎
‎“If a project was started with debt, the one who pays the debt owns the project,” Mr. Chanda said. “So President Hichilema and his team should claim all those projects. They are the ones settling the bills.”

‎The UPPZ leader also warned that Zambians must not forget the economic pain caused by high borrowing. He urged voters to ask tough questions before any election.

‎“Don’t be fooled by big promises or photos of tarmac,” he said. “Ask them: where did the money come from? And who is paying it back?”

‎Mr. Chanda did not name specific former leaders in the video but was clearly referring to officials from the previous Patriotic Front government. His comments come as political debate heats up ahead of August 13 general elections.
