Government Hands Over K9 Million Jongolo Dam to Dundumwezi Community

BY CLIVE MWEETWA

The Government, through the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation, has officially handed over the newly constructed Jongolo Dam to the people of Dundumwezi Constituency in Chief Chikanta's chiefdom of Kalomo District, Southern Province.

Speaking during the handover ceremony today, 1st July 2026, Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation Permanent Secretary Mr. Romas Kamanga, who was the guest of honour, reaffirmed the government's commitment to investing in critical water infrastructure to support sustainable social and economic development across the country.

Mr. Kamanga said the Jongolo Dam, constructed by the Zambia National Service at a total cost of over K9 million, is expected to benefit more than 7,000 people while providing water for over 5,000 livestock, thereby improving livelihoods and strengthening resilience against the effects of climate change.

He said the project demonstrates the government's resolve to enhance water security, promote agricultural production and improve the welfare of rural communities.

Meanwhile, one of the beneficiaries, Headman Hamwami, expressed gratitude to the UPND government for delivering the much-needed project. He appealed to the government to construct more dams in Dundumwezi Constituency, noting that recurring droughts and climate change continue to affect farming communities.

Headman Hamwami said additional water infrastructure would enable more people to engage in agriculture throughout the year, boost food production and improve household incomes.

Construction of the Jongolo Dam commenced on 15th March 2024 and was completed in December 2024, before its official handover to the community today.

The ceremony was attended by Southern Province Permanent Secretary Dr. Namani Moonze, Kalomo District Commissioner Mr. Joshua Sikaduli, Chief Chikanta, Chief Siachitema, UPND unopposed Dundumwezi Parliamentary Candidate Edgar

TODDLER VANNISHES IN KALOMO DISTRICT.

By Ben Hamatowe

A family in Mawaya Compound, Kalomo District, is appealing for public assistance after their one-year-three-month-old baby boy went missing under unclear circumstances.

The child's mother, Jennifer Mweemba, tells Namwianga Radio News desk that the boy disappeared on Saturday, 27th June 2026, between 09:00 and 10:00 hours after she briefly left him in the care of his 10-year-old sister while she went to bathe.

The child's father, Nkausu Choobe, was reportedly inside the house at the time.

The incident has been reported to the Zambia Police Service, and investigations are underway.

The child has now been missing for four days.

Anyone with information that may help locate the child is urged to report to the nearest police station or contact the family immediately.
