SIAKASIPA COMMUNITY SCHOOL 1X3 CLASSROOM BLOCK SET FOR COMMISSIONING

The Zimba Town Council has announced that the newly constructed 1x3 classroom block at Siakasipa Community School in Kanyanga Ward will be officially handed over and commissioned tomorrow, Friday, 5th June 2026.

According to a notice published on the official page of the Zimba Town Council, the commissioning ceremony will be officiated by Zimba District Commissioner Robinson Mulamfu, who is expected to attend as Guest of Honour.

The classroom block was constructed using funds from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and is aimed at improving access to quality education by providing additional classroom space and creating a better learning environment for pupils and teachers.

The council says the project demonstrates government's commitment to strengthening education infrastructure and ensuring that communities benefit from decentralized development programmes through the CDF.

The commissioning of the classroom block is another development milestone for Kanyanga Ward, which has also benefited from previous CDF-funded projects, including infrastructure development at Nkungwa Primary School and the construction of the Masanzya Climate Resilient Borehole.

Community members, traditional leaders, government officials and other stakeholders are expected to attend the event and celebrate the successful completion of the project.

FRA TARGETS 16,500 METRIC TONNES OF MAIZE IN KALOMO

The Food Reserve Agency (FRA) is expected to purchase 16,500 metric tonnes of white Grade A maize from farmers in Kalomo District of Southern Province during the 2026 crop marketing season.

Kalomo District Commissioner Joshua Sikaduli announced the target while officiating at a three-day FRA pre-season training workshop for satellite depot clerks held in the district.

Mr. Sikaduli urged the depot clerks to conduct themselves professionally, orderly, and courteously throughout the marketing season, emphasizing the need to treat farmers with respect.

He warned that his office would not tolerate any indiscipline among FRA staff and directed that all farmers under FISP be allowed to deliver up to ten 50-kilogram bags of maize in line with Circular CM11 of 2024 to offset their obligations.

Meanwhile, FRA has announced that all farmers supplying maize this season must have bank accounts or mobile money accounts with Airtel, MTN, or Zamtel to receive payments, as the marketing season runs from June to October across the country's 1,700 depots.

TWO INFORMAL MINERS DIE IN PIT COLLAPSE

Two informal miners have died in Sinazongwe district after being trapped in a collapsed open pit mine.

The deceased are 47-year-old Jasper Siamuwele of Chuunga village and Arnold Munkombwe, 48, of Nkungwe B Compound in Maamba.

On 31st May 2026, around 16:00 hours, the victims, along with other yet-to-be-identified individuals, were reportedly engaged in illegal aquamarine mining activities in an open pit mine.

While inside the mine pit, which is located on the edge of a steep hill in Lubwe village, the walls collapsed, trapping the two men beneath the debris.

Southern Province Commissioner of Police, Moono Namalongo, noted that people around the area later gathered at the scene and managed to retrieve the remains.

He said the victims sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collapse, with their remains conveyed to Maamba General Hospital Mortuary.

SPEEDING DRIVER KILLS 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN ZIMBA

A 14-year-old girl has died after being hit by a speeding vehicle while crossing the Great North Road near Zimba Secondary School on Sunday.

Southern Province Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo says the victim, identified as Faith Liywali of Namadula Compound, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at Zimba Mission Hospital.

Mr. Namalongo says the accident involved a Toyota Allex registration number BCD 348, driven by 28-year-old Nathan Phiri of Choma District, who escaped uninjured.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver failed to control the vehicle due to excessive speed before hitting the pedestrian.

Mr. Namalongo has since urged motorists to observe speed limits and exercise caution in pedestrian zones to prevent further loss of life on the roads.
