Zambia is expected to record another bumper maize harvest, with output of nearly 5 million metric tons in the 2025-26 crop season, up about one-quarter from the previous season, a crop-forecasting survey has showed.

This season's projected maize harvest would be the highest ever recorded, surpassing the previous season's record output of about 3.9 million tons, the agriculture ministry said in a post on Facebook.

"5 million tonnes! Zambia’s biggest ever maize harvest. My fellow farmers, we keep working," President Hakainde Hichilema posted on X.

A FORMER Zambia National Service (ZNS) officer is preparing to undertake an awareness walk from Choma to Livingstone to raise awareness about mental health and substance abuse.

Mwenzo Siame says the 190-kilometre walk forms part of the first phase of the “Educate The Junkies” campaign, aimed at addressing drug abuse, the mental health crisis and vulnerability among young people.

Mr Siame says the awareness walk, being held under the theme “Don’t Do Drugs”, will be conducted through the Blue Foundation, an organisation he recently established.

“The walk is intended to amplify urgent calls for community-based intervention systems as cases of depression, addiction, homelessness, hopelessness and substance dependency continue to affect many young people across communities,” he says.

The 27-year-old says the organisation launched the “Educate The Junkies” campaign following recent tragic incidents in Choma, where young people died after consuming alcohol suspected to have contained a poisonous substance, as well as the growing mental health crisis among youths.

Mr Siame says the initiative aims to raise K1.5 million to renovate and establish a community training and rehabilitation safe space.

He says the centre is expected to serve as a rehabilitation and empowerment hub for vulnerable and at-risk groups, including street children, s*x workers and delinquent youths.

He cycled from Lusaka, Zambia, all the way to South Africa, covering an incredible 3,350 kilometres in just 34 days.

James Falanga, popularly known as One Yeye International, set off on April 15 on a bold cycling journey across Southern Africa, passing through Botswana before reaching Cape Town.

Today at around 13:30, he is expected to be warmly welcomed back at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka as his journey officially comes to an end.

Falanga says the tour was driven by a mission to promote African culture, tourism, unity, and the idea of a borderless Africa.

Along the way, he connected with traditional leaders, school children, truck drivers, media figures, and everyday citizens stories he says reflect Africa’s diversity and resilience.

“One thing I’ve learned is that despite our different countries and languages, Ubuntu connects us all,” he said.
