SIALUBALO WORKS UNDER TORCHLIGHT

By Ruth Kambita in Msanzala

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Gift Sialubalo, last evening worked beyond normal hours to inspect ongoing construction at Nyamphondolo Primary School in Msanzala Constituency.

The Minister and his team conducted their inspection under torchlight to ensure timely progress on a new 1 × 3 classroom block, a project funded through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

Speaking at the site, Mr Sialubalo said he could not afford to suspend work due to darkness or official working hours.

“We must ensure that projects benefiting our communities move forward without unnecessary delays because this is what the President wants to see,” he said.

The new classroom block is expected to improve learning conditions for pupils at Nyamphondolo Primary and contributes to the government’s wider efforts to enhance educational infrastructure in rural areas where most pupils have gone back to school due to the Free Education policy.

$70 million SME fund ignorance shocks Mubanga

By Alex Maboshe

Minister of Small Medium Enterprise, Ellias Mubanga was this afternoon shocked to learn that a huge number of prominent entrepreneurs in Zambia are unaware of the USD$ 70 million dollars’ fund meant to be accessed by Small and Medium Enterprise.

The new SME Fund also known as the Growth Investment Partners Zambia (GIP) Zambia is an investment fund that was launched by President Hakainde Hichilema to support specifically small and medium businesses.

Mr Mubanga’s shock came as he was responding and giving partial solutions to concerns of what the SMEs who had an engagement with him have described as too many and exploitative compliances demanded from them by various government wings.

“How is this possible? You mean no one of you knows about this 70-million-dollar fund your President launched? you need to be serious,” Mr Mubanga said.

Mr Mubanga said the US $ 70 million fund, which the SMEs were not aware of, aims to support over one hundred and fifty small and medium sized enterprises(SMEs) across Zambia by providing flexible, long term loans in local currency.

However, the entrepreneurs shifted the blame back to the ministry for using a poor and outdated method of communication such as physical newspapers.

Sarah Mako, proprietor of Royalty Salon and Makeup, who spoke alongside social media influencer Mwizukanji suggested that it was high time that such vital information was channelled through social media platforms or electronic newspapers.

SMEs through Sarah and Mwizukanji raised several concerns, some of which are Zesco power schedule, Reduction of taxes for local business owners, foreign investors taking up simple Zambian businesses.

Mr. Mubanga has however assured that all their problems will be history as the Government is working on an SME bill aimed at comprehensively addressing all challenges.

He said next month there will be an Indaba for the SMEs from acros
