Jonas Savimbi, The Assassination that Ended Angolan 🇦🇴 Civil War.

Born on 3rd October 1934 to Evangelist parents. Jonas Savimbi attended school during the challenging time when it was very difficult for black Africans to enjoy the privilege of being in a classroom. After high school, he was awarded a scholarship due to his excellent performance, and he went to study Medicine in Lisbon, Portugal.

While attending university, he was arrested for political violations and later continued his studies in Switzerland, where he dropped medicine and pursued political science. He graduated with awards and was known as the most charismatic rebel on the African continent. He was later recognized by President Reagan of the USA 🇺🇲 as the most talented charismatic leader of modern African history.

Savimbi joined politics and aided Angola's fight for Independence. However, he had misunderstandings with the government under José Eduardo dos Santos, the President of Angola. The international community encouraged them to compete in a well-supervised election. Unfortunately, Savimbi lost the 1992 elections and returned to the forest to seize power by waging a brutal war.

The war resulted in over half a million deaths and around 100,000 disabled or amputated. After years of resistance, the President of Zambia 🇿🇲, FTJ Chiluba, facilitated a meeting where dos Santos signed the Lusaka Accord with Savimbi. Savimbi was appointed as one of Angola's two Vice Presidents, but he never stopped fighting the government and eventually returned to the forest.

On February 22, 2002, Israel surveillance experts tracked Savimbi, and he was shot 15 times in the head. What's intriguing is that he had been reported dead 15 times before; was the 15 symbolic?

He was buried in Luena town and in 2019, 17 years later, he was given a dignified funeral to heal Angola from its past atrocities.

Today, Angola has remained civil war-free and is the 8th largest economy in Africa.

EDITORIAL | Apologies and Amnesia; Lungu’s Burial Sparks Hypocrisy and Selective Memory

Let us get something clear. Former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu will be buried in Johannesburg, and that’s not a state decision. It is a family one. A political family, no doubt, with enough ambition to say they will “repatriate his bones when they return to power.” That, in itself, is no longer grief. It is theatre.

Now there is a loud campaign asking President Hakainde Hichilema to apologize. For what? For not dying first? For beating Lungu in a democratic election? For refusing to pretend that the bad blood between the two never existed? This call is not about closure. It is about humiliation. It is about power play dressed as mourning. And it is insulting to the intelligence of Zambians who lived through their political war.

The truth often ignored is that both men mistreated each other. Lungu made Hichilema a prisoner, humiliated him, and repeatedly weaponized state machinery against him. Hichilema, in power, returned the favour with political exclusion, aggressive audits, and a noticeable coldness toward his predecessor. Two men. Two egos. One unresolved rivalry. But here’s the hypocrisy: those calling for HH to apologize were silent when Lungu never did. Why demand grace from one side, but not the other?

This moral inconsistency is Zambia’s political cancer. A refusal to confront both sides of the story. A selective outrage that canonizes one villain while vilifying another. Edgar Lungu was no saint. And Hichilema is no monster. But both were and are presidents, humans, and products of a fragile democracy. If the goal is healing, then start with honesty. Not nostalgia. Not blind loyalty.

It is dangerous to turn funerals into battlegrounds and legacies into tools of blackmail. It’s also dishonest to weaponize apologies for political gain. If Lungu never apologized for arbitrarily detaining HH, why is the burden now on HH to say sorry to a man who never sought to make
