DEC cautions Archbishop Alick Banda over alleged unlawful possession of ZRA vehicle

The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has formally warned and cautioned Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Lusaka, Dr. Alick Banda, following investigations into the alleged unlawful possession of a motor vehicle belonging to the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA).
In a press statement issued on Monday, the DEC, through its Anti-Money Laundering Investigations Unit (AMLIU), stated that the caution relates to a Toyota Hilux motor vehicle bearing registration number ALF7734, which is suspected to have been unlawfully obtained from ZRA.
According to the Commission, investigations indicate that Dr. Banda was in possession of the vehicle on dates not precisely established, but within the period between 22 April 2021 and 27 December 2023. The possession is alleged to be contrary to Section 319(a) of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia, which relates to possession of property reasonably suspected to have been unlawfully obtained.
The DEC further noted that when Dr. Banda was given an opportunity to explain how he came into possession of the vehicle, he chose to remain silent.The Commission emphasized that investigations into the matter are still ongoing and that the public will be informed of the outcome at an appropriate time.
