BoZ withholds gold purchases from ‘rush’ districts over child labour!

Bank of Zambia (BoZ) Governor Denny Kalyalya says the central bank is not buying gold being extracted from “gold rush" districts country-wide because of ethical issues such as child and or militia labour.

And BoZ has about 2.8 tonnes of gold in its reserves worth US$300 million.

Dr Kalyalya said during a media tour and briefing at Zambia International Trade Fair (ZITF) here on Sunday that the process of buying gold using the local currency has continued.

However, Dr Kalyalya highlighted that BoZ is not participating in buying gold from gold rush districts country wide for varying reasons.

Dr Kalyalya said to start with, gold coming from the said districts is unprocessed.

He said BoZ can only buy gold from places where the mineral is properly mined, processed and with no issues of child or slave labour.

The first malaria treatment specifically for babies and very young children has been approved for use and will be rolled out in African countries within weeks.

Eight African countries, including Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire and Mozambique, took part in trials of the drug will be among the first to access it. Scientists say the breakthrough will help reduce inequality to healthcare access.

Malaria was linked to around 597,000 deaths in 2023 - almost all of which were in Africa and around three-quarters were children under the age of five.(BBC News)

The python suffocated the king cobra while the king cobra bit it. Both snakes died, one from asphyxiation and the other from the venom. And that is how people destroy each other. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump have met inside St Peter's Basilica ahead of Pope Francis' funeral.

The White House described the 15-minute meeting as "very productive" and a Ukrainian spokesperson said the pair would meet for a second time later on Saturday.

Trump and Zelensky were pictured sitting locked in deep discussion, minutes before Pope Francis' funeral was due to start.

The meeting came a day after Trump said Russia and Ukraine were "very close to a deal", following talks between his envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Friday.

A man almost killed

Former Zimbabwe Cricketer Guy Whittall Survives Leopard Attack

Former Zimbabwe cricketer Guy Whittall, 51, has survived a leopard attack while trekking through the conservancy he runs at Humani, Zimbabwe.

He needed emergency surgery and was airlifted to Milton Park Hospital in Harare.

His wife, Hannah, credited their dog Chikara with saving Guy's life by fighting off the leopard.

This is not Guy's first close encounter with a wild animal; in 2013, he woke up to find a crocodile under his bed!
