Do trains Still Move?

By Kalata News

Lusaka, July, 2025 – MANY young Zambians have never had the opportunity of going on a long distance by train.

Not long ago, trains were a preferred cheap and secure mode of transportation for students going to and from school, young executives returning to their villages on holiday and for families relocation from one town to another.

Trains were also a cheaper mode of transporting bulk goods from household goods, farm produce to animals. They were also used by companies, especially the mines, to transport their raw materials and also products.

In Lusaka, the Njanji Commuter train from Lilayi to Ngwerere and George Compound to Chilenje, was a favourite of workers moving between these areas.

In Livingstone, the Mulobezi mixed train, slow as it was, was a reliable mode of movement taking villagers from Mulobezi and the surrounding areas into Livingstone while transporting wood from the Saw mills.

So what happened to these trains?

Faster buses and trucks arrived.

Zambia Railways Limited have embarked on a series of campaigns to return the Zambia train back to its position of being a reliable passenger and goods transporter in Zambia.

According to ZRL, they offer Ordinary Train – Between Livingstone and Kitwe (Zambezi & Kafue Train) and a Mixed Train – Between Livingstone and Mulobezi (Mulobezi mixed train).

They also have various Service Classes provided on their passenger Trains ranging from Business Class, Sleeper Class, Standard Class, and Economy Class.

On top of that, they have Baggage Vans – used for transporting furniture, household items, agricultural products and many other items by rail using our Passenger trains between Kitwe and Livingstone as well as Mulobezi and Livingstone.

Farmers not consulted, says Union.

Lusaka, July, 2025 - The Farmers National Union (ZNFU) has advised the Zambian Government to withdraw the proposed land reforms and consult farmers.

ZNFU president Jervis Zimba says farmers are not comfortable with the proposal to give powers to the Land Commissioner powers to change land ownerships.

Zimba says farmers depend on secured land ownership for their farming and investments into their farms. Giving powers to the Land Commissioner to change title at any time would leave farmers vulnerable.

ZNFU says farmers have been the most affected by attempts to change land ownership by the registrar of lands.

"Government must withdraw this bill and consult widely the farming community," says ZNFU.

Land ownership disputes in Zambia has been common with various groups claiming ownership on the same piece of land.

Let’s Have A Good Food Logo

Lusaka June, 2025 – FOOD processing companies must work with nutritionists to produce less harmful and healthy foods, says Nutritionist Belinda Tembo.

Speaking on a Radio Phoniex interview recently, Ms. Tembo said most ultra-processed foods had a lot of ingredients meant to keep the foods fresh and tasty but when consumed by humans, these foods are in the long run harmful to the Zambians.

The nutritionist urged companies that are producing healthy foods to support her in advocating for a ‘Good Food Logo’ where a ‘Healthy Food’ marking can be placed on products deemed by nutritionists to be healthier and ideal for Zambians to eat. This will be to differentiate them from ultra-processed foods and other harmful foods that need moderation.

“Consumers have a right to choose between healthy foods and those ultra-processed foods that might look and taste nice but at are not ideal for them.”

She added, “Manufacturers should make their labels legible so people can read and understand the ingredients contained in the foods. However, the more you don’t understand the ingredients in there, the danger these ingredients could be harmful to your body.”

She said by adopting a healthy food logo, consumers that require to be on a healthy diet can look for this logo and buy only foods that have been certified by nutritionist as healthy.

She said on average, a Zambia must consume daily about half of their food intake being carbohydrates, 10-15 percent protein and the rest can be fat.

Ms Tembo said Zambians must choose foods that contain fibre as humans need more fibre in their diet to prevent refined sugars being quickly absorbed into their blood streams.

“We are consuming way too much refined sugars and unfortunately most people do not know this is way too harmful.”
Ms. Tembo lamented the fact that more and more Zambians in their prime of their lives and careers are now dogged by healthy complications resulting from the bad food choices based on what they buy.

“We are in a country where-by age 40 people are being hypertensive or stroke or diabetic and are developing all kinds of non-communicable diseases and health complications because of the bad foods they have been subjected too.” Said Ms. Tembo.

She said manufacturers are placing more salt and more sugars and more preservatives to ensure that their foods have a longer shelf life by staying as long as they need to be on the market shelves without going bad.

Ms. Tembo continued, “We know for the manufacturer they are driven by profit margins and desire to have their foods stay as long as they can on the shelves without getting bad but as nutritionists we are saying let’s also consider the health status of the consumers.”

Ms Tembo said even children and infants were not spared from the allure and dangers of ultra-processed foods with many parents packing in the children’s school packs harmful processed drinks and foods.

“The school system must help educate children on the need for children to be fed vegetables and simple health foods to protect their developing bodies from harmful modern foods. How we eat today really is depended on how we have been eating in the past.” she said.

She appealed to manufacturers of the ultra-processed food to work with nutritionists to improve on their products so they can do away completely with additives and processes that turn their foods into harmful foods.

She said it would be difficult to place a ‘Good Food’ logo on ultra-processed products because they contain a lot of harmful ingredients that are now being hidden in too much salt or sugars to make them tasteful.

Zambia’s so called middle income class and the educated are the largest consumers of processed foods.

“Unfortunately, if we are losing people at the age of 40 and 50, continuity becomes a problem and this is harming the country’s economic growth and affecting the country health. This is why I am taking this campaign, called Way To Eat,” Ms. Tembo said.

BANK OF ZAMBIA CAN MAKE YOU MONEY: Why Smart Zambian Entrepreneurs Are Investing in Government Securities.

By Kamphembele Ngulube

In today’s economic climate, Zambian entrepreneurs are learning an important truth: smart money doesn’t just hustle—it also earns in silence. One of the most overlooked but powerful financial tools available to business owners in Zambia is investing in Government Securities.
Whether you’re running a startup, a real estate firm, or a growing enterprise, Government of Zambia Securities offer a reliable way to grow your capital, preserve your savings, and even unlock new funding opportunities—all with lower risk than many private investments.
What Are Government Securities?
Government securities are debt instruments issued by the Zambian Government through the Bank of Zambia (BoZ). When you invest, you are essentially lending money to the government, and in return, you receive interest income and your capital back at the end of the term.
There are two main types:
✅ Treasury Bills – Short-term (up to 1 year), sold at a discount, and redeemed at face value.
✅ Government Bonds – Long-term (2 to 15 years), with semi-annual interest (coupon) payments and repayment of the face value at maturity.
Why Entrepreneurs Should Pay Attention
As an entrepreneur, you deal with risk daily—from fluctuating sales to rising operating costs. Investing in government securities offers a counterbalance to that risk. Here’s why:
Top Benefits for Entrepreneurs
1. Safe and Reliable Investment
Government securities are guaranteed by the full faith and credit of the Zambian Government, making them one of the safest places to park your money.
2. Liquidity & Flexibility
Need cash? You can sell your securities on the secondary market before they mature. You can also use them as collateral for bank loans—a strategy savvy business owners use to access funding while their capital remains invested.
3. Consistent Passive Income
With government bonds, you earn semi-annual interest payments, which can be used to pay salaries, reinvest in your business, or build savings for expansion.
4. Accessible Starting Point
You can start with as little as K1,000, and there’s no restriction on who can invest—whether you’re an individual or a business entity. For amounts below K500,000, you can enter through the non-competitive window and still earn attractive returns.
5. Tax Efficient
Only a 15% withholding tax and 1% handling fee applies to interest income. And for Treasury Bills, the discount income is tax-free.
✅ Real-World Example
Imagine instead of spending K500,000 outright to build property, you first invest it in a 364-day Treasury Bill with a return rate of 20%. You’d pay about K416,857, and after one year, you receive K500,000—a gain of over K83,000 without lifting a finger.
Better yet, you can use the security as collateral at a bank like ZANACO to access capital for your project—while your investment continues earning.
How to Get Started
1. Open a Kwacha account at any Zambian commercial bank.
2. Register on the Bank of Zambia’s Central Securities Depository (CSD).
3. Submit a bid either:
☑️ Directly to the Bank of Zambia (with a Letter of Guarantee), or
☑️ Through your commercial bank.
4. Track auctions through newspapers, BoZ website (www.boz.zm), or SMS alerts.
Remember Always that Wealth Moves in Silence!
Every smart entrepreneur knows that cash alone isn’t king—cash flow is. Government securities allow you to grow your money quietly while keeping your business moving. Whether you’re funding expansion, building reserves, or just looking for a smart place to put your profits, it’s time to think bigger than a savings bank account.
Let your money work just as hard as you do.
