The burial will not take place today. The matter has been adjourned and burial suspended by tbe court. Attorney General has until July 3 to submit an application on whether body should be repatriated to Zambia. Lungus have until July 4 to respond once application is made. Case can only be heard on July 18. State hope negotiations can happen before then to reach a fair conclusion. Meanwhile, mourners are still gathered in SA for the earlier funeral arranged.

The Lungu family and their spokesperson, lawyer Makebi Zulu, are at the Pretoria High Court for the hearing of an interim interdict to stop the burial of former President Edgar Lungu in South Africa.

Zambia’s Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha filed the public interest lawsuit yesterday, opposing the burial in South Africa.

After weeks of back-and-forth tension, the family of former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has finally spoken and the decision is final: the late Head of State will be laid to rest in South Africa, not Zambia.

This was a move many never expected…and the decision is not just emotional… it’s historic.
For the first time, a Zambian Head of State will be buried outside his own country.
