SOUTH AFRICAN National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola is today expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

He has been summoned by the National Prosecuting Authority in connection with a R360 million SAPS health services tender that was awarded to a private company. The contract that was meant to provide medical support to thousands of police officers, was later cancelled after serious irregularities were flagged.

The case is part of a broader corruption investigation that has already led to the arrest of businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and 12 senior police officials.

Masemola has indicated he will cooperate with the process and has previously welcomed the investigation, saying it is important for public trust.

The court is expected to outline the charges and set a date for the next proceedings.

TONSE Alliance Presidential Candidate Brian Mundubile has described the UPND as a failed administration that has subjected Zambians to suffering in the last four years since taking over from the Patriotic Front in 2021.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Mundubile said he had no intentions of joining the UPND as the vision for Tonse Alliance is better and cannot be compared to that of President Hakainde Hichilema.

The PF Mporokoso Lawmaker was responding to UPND Lusaka province chairman Obvious Mwaliteta quoted by News Diggers suggesting that Mundubile should join the UPND if he wants to rule the country.

Mwaliteta further said, Mundubile’s only option was to work under President Hichilema as that would bring him closer to power.

“Zambians are weary of economic hardship, rising poverty, and unemployment. The current administration has lost touch with ordinary citizens and needs to be replaced by leaders with a people-centred agenda," said Mr Mundubile.

To illustrate his point, he recounted stories from everyday Zambians struggling to make ends meet, emphasizing the growing frustration among the populace.

Moreover, he highlighted the need for accountability, urging citizens to be more engaged in the political process to ensure their voices are heard.

Mundubile appealed to the Zambian people to ensure that the UPND government does not return to power in August ,as he is driven by a desire to serve the country and correct what he called the government’s failures.

“The UPND has failed to inspire the people of Zambia,” he said. He discussed specific instances where the government had promised development but failed to deliver, such as in infrastructure and healthcare.

"If elected, my first goal is to put Zambia first and prioritise Zambians as well as proposed detailed plans for reforms in education and healthcare, committing to ensure that every Zambian has access to quality services” .

BREAKING: Lungu family finally appeals repatriation judgement in SA Supreme Court

EDGAR Lungu's family has finally filed a notice of appeal in the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) of South Africa, almost two months after the Court granted it leave to appeal.

This comes a day after the Economic and Financial Crimes Court (EFCC) ordered the forfeiture of 79 vehicles and 23 properties including a filling station and double storey luxury aparments, which Lungu gifted to his son Dalitso.

In court documents seen by Kalemba, the former first family have appealed against the judgment of the Full bench of the Pretoria High Court which ordered that Lungu’s remains be handed over to the Zambian government for repatriation and burial with full state honours.

In a notice, dated February 9, 2026, the family led by former first lady Esther Lungu are asking the Supreme Court of Appeal, to overturn the Pretoria High Court’s ruling of August 8, 2025, which had unanimously ruled in favour of the Zambian government.

The family is also seeking an order which would dismiss government’s application, with costs.

"Take notice that pursuant to leave to appeal having been granted by this Honourable Court on 23 December 2025, the Appellants hereby note an appeal to this Honourable Court against the whole of the judgment and order of the Full Court of the Gauteng Division, Pretoria (per Ledwaba AJP, Modau ADJP and Potterill J), dated 8 August 2025, under case number 096565/2025, in which the Court granted the First Respondent's application and made no order as to costs," part of the document.

Edgar Lungu died on June 5, 2025, at a clinic in South Africa and his remains have since been kept at a South African funeral home.

The standoff began after the family reversed plans to repatriate Lungu's body to Zambia in June last year, a move that disrupted a national mourning programme declared by President Hakainde Hichilema.

The family later announced intentions to bury the former president privately in South Africa.

But on June 24, 2025, the Zambian government, through Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha, obtained an urgent court order from the Pretoria High Court stopping the burial.

The government argued that as a former head of state, Lungu should be buried in Zambia with the dignity accorded to the presidency.

In affidavits filed before the High Court, Lungu’s widow Esther, his children and relatives argued that the former president did not want President Hakainde Hichilema anywhere near his body hence the attempt to bury him in South Africa.

The government disputed these claims, telling the court there was no credible evidence that Lungu wished to be buried outside Zambia or that he opposed a state funeral.

It maintained that, regardless of political differences, the office of the presidency must be respected.

On August 8, 2025, a full bench of the Pretoria High Court ruled in favour of the government, ordering the repatriation of Lungu’s remains.

The family attempted to appeal directly to South Africa’s Constitutional Court, but the application was dismissed on August 26, 2025, with the court directing them back to the High Court.

Subsequently, on September 16, 2025, the Pretoria High Court dismissed the family’s application for leave to appeal.

The family then petitioned the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein, which granted leave to appeal in December.

Lumezi crime prevention officer takes own life after wife hides his HIV meds

A 38-YEAR-OLD man of Lumezi District in Eastern Province has taken his own life after his wife hid antiretroviral therapy - ART medication.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba said Tiza Njobvu, 38, a Community Crime Prevention Officer -CCPU under Mwase Waminga Police Post in Lumezi left his home on Wednesday, January 28, for a mining expedition with his brother, Thomas Bwali, 53.

Carrying out mining activities in Chisamamba, Njobvu realised that he had run out of his ART, and decided to go back home to fetch more medication.

On arrival back home, he discovered that his wife was not there and that, his ART were not in the place he left them. He contacted his wife, Mervis Nkhata who at this time had moved to their farm house which was about 10 kilometers away from the village.

Learning this, Njobvu followed his wife. On arriving at their farm house, the couple had an altercation. The wife denied hiding the husband's ART medication. She later told him that his medication was in the same place he left them, back in the village.

Angered by this, Njobvu travelled back to the village, where it appears he did not find the his ART and resorted to drinking alcohol.

According to the Eastern Province Police Chief, it remains unknown why Mervis hid her husband's medication.

The East Police Chief shares with TV Yatu that, on realising his brother who left the mining site on January 30 had not returned, Bwali followed him to see why.

On arriving at his residence today morning around 03:00 hours, Bwali heard a noise come from his brother's house. When he called out Njobvu's name, no response followed and so, Bwali resorted to enter the now deceased's house with force.

On entering the house, he found Njobvu laying lifeless on the floor.

Bwali promptly called the deceased's duty station. Officers at Mwase Waminga Police Post rushed to the scene and found the deceased as reported by the elder brother.

They further discovered that he used a mosquito net to take away his life.
