A NIGHT BEFORE MY WEDDING
PART 1
Come on, just for the last time, and make it sweet, tender, and soft.
This wasn't an easy choice to make, as many of you will blame me for making this decision.
It all began when I was dating this guy, Norman, but I used to call him Nono - it was his favorite nickname. We met at my late sister's Chilanga mulilo. I recall how people often look their best at chilanga mulilo, so I made an effort to look beautiful too.
Nono was coming from Kabwata, and he couldn't take his eyes off me as I danced. To be honest, I was equally captivated by him - he looked incredibly handsome that day. So, I deliberately moved next to him, and as a gentleman, he stood up and asked for my number. I didn't hesitate; I gave it to him.
Fast forward, guys - if you remember being in love to the point where you feel an intense connection of waiting for your friend to (pupu) in the same toilet without feeling ashamed. we reached that point! He took me to cinemas, comedy shows, and Victoria Falls. Nikuti kwe sitinayende ise (you know what I mean). We shared intimate moments in his bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and even by the window.
Until that fateful day when he called me and said he needed to leave Lusaka and work from Kabwe. I refused, but he insisted, so I blocked him for two weeks from all my social media and phone. I think I was a bit insecure.
Two weeks later, I tried to call him, but his phone was off. Unfortunately, I didn't have his sister's number, and his friend had shifted from the place I knew him.
Fast forward, I stayed single for seven months without him. I almost thought he had died or something had happened to him, until I met this gentle man at my late sister's funeral. This guy was SDA, and oh guys, he could sing! He sang all night long at my sister's funeral, who died in a road traffic accident.
After two beautiful songs, he came and sat next to me, comforting me, and got my number. Fast forward, I found myself with him in his church the next Sabbath. Oh guys, I joined his church and immediately became a Sabata mubotu (a regular churchgoer).
This guy could sing like no man's business, so I thought to myself, "I think my house won't be boring because he will be singing for me every single day." Three months down the line, we had our kitchen party, and the following week was our wedding.
You know how the devil works - eight hours before my wedding, that's when things got messed up. I was busy with my friends in Mr. Price, choosing the best shoes for my husband, when I saw Nonno standing in front of me. At first, I couldn't believe my eyes. I blinked, and he was still standing there.
"We need to talk," he said.
"Talk about what?" I replied.
He quickly grabbed my hand, moved me away from my friends, and it was dramatic. Though I couldn't say much, because I wanted to hear him out and find out where he had been for the past year.
So, I called one of my best friends, telling him I had an emergency, and he drove to a nearby lodge. Nono tried to kiss me, but I stopped him, saying,
"Hold on, you know it's almost my wedding day."
"I know that's why I came," he replied.
From his response, I got confused, but I continued asking him,
"Where have you been?"
"The two weeks you blocked me, I was recruited into the army as an officer. I was there for a year, and I just had my pass-out three days ago. Then I heard about your wedding from my friend, and I came rushing to stop it," he said.
"Did you just stop it?"
I asked. "After you left for over a year, you must be joking," I said.
"How long have you known this guy?" he asked. "Three to four months now," I replied.
"You must be joking yourself - how on earth would you marry a person you've known for three months?" he said.
At this point, I didn't know if he was right or not, so I kept quiet.
"How can you throw away all our memories for a guy, a man you barely know?" he said. "I still love you," he added. "Sorry, I'm already taken now," I replied.
He came close to me, touched me the way he used to, and whispered, the first sentence of this story. "Please, I don't want to cheat on my husband." I replied,
"As if you already made the vows, did you?" he said
