A security guard's primary function is to protect people and property from harm. During emergencies, security guards play an active and often critical role, as they may be the first to arrive at or discover an emergency situation.
While not always required to be experts in containment, guards are expected to recognize various emergencies, assess threat potential, and take specified actions to respond or prevent them from developing.
General Role and Preparedness

Guards need to know how to recognize different types of emergencies and assess the potential threat to life and property.
Proactive Prevention, Guards are expected to monitor facilities to prevent emergencies by identifying potential threats and taking appropriate steps to contain and neutralize the.
Emergency Preparedness Plans
These plans are crucial for protecting lives and property,guards should be made aware of escalation procedures. These can be fire plans, unruly behavior by members of the public or a theft in progress these plans help with minimizing disruption and restoring order(if not life threatening) it’s important for guards to know which appropriate emergency service providers to reach out to(whilst in touch with their supervisor)
Essential Knowledge for Guards
Guards should know, what emergencies are potentially likely to happen at their specific facility(each client/facility has different assessments). They need to know who within the company is primarily responsible for handling emergencies so that they coordinate effectively as they respond.
