The "Gourmet" Water Snob

I need to talk about the people who treat a glass of tap water like it’s a vintage 1945 Bordeaux. You know the ones—the Water Sommeliers.
I was at a dinner party last night, and I offered this guy a glass of water. He looked at the glass like I’d just handed him a sample of radioactive runoff from a Soviet power plant.
"Is this... tap?" he asks, his voice trembling with the kind of trauma usually reserved for Victorian orphans.
I told him, "Yeah, it’s Chicago’s finest. It’s got minerals, it’s got character, it’s probably got a little bit of the 1920s Mafia in it. It builds the immune system!"

He goes, "Oh, I only drink water that’s been reverse-osmosed through the tears of a Himalayan monk and filtered through a Brita that costs more than my car."
Listen, if your water needs a resume and a background check before it hits your lips, you aren't "hydrated," you’re high-maintenance. We’re 70% water, Dave. Most of that 70% in you is probably just LaCroix bubbles and ego at this point.

Then comes the best part: the tasting notes.
"It’s a bit... heavy on the palate."
"I’m detecting notes of 'Old Pipe' and 'Municipal Regret'."
It’s H2O, Susan! It’s two hydrogens and an oxygen. It doesn't have "notes." If your water has "notes," those aren't flavors—those are contaminants.

And don't even get me started on the Reusable Bottle Arms Race.
Everyone is walking around with these massive, 64-ounce metal canisters that look like they contain a donated kidney. They’re $60! If you drop one on your toe, you’re in the ER. If you drop it on the floor, it sounds like a pipe bomb went off in a cathedral.
We’ve turned basic survival into a luxury sport. My grandfather fought in a war and drank water out of a helmet he’d just used as a pillow. Now, if we don't have a "Smart Bottle" that pings our iPhone to tell us we're thirsty, we just... wither away?
Newsflash: If you’re thirsty, your body has this amazing, built-in "app" called THIRST. It’s been around for three million years. It doesn't need a firmware update, and it definitely doesn't care if the water has a "crisp, volcanic finish."
Just drink the tap water, Dave. Your kidneys are bored. Give them a challenge
