GOVERNMENT CLARIFIES SITUATION AT OYDC PRAYER GATHERING

Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana has clarified the situation surrounding a prayer gathering at the Olympic Youth Development Centre (OYDC) on October 23, 2025.

In a statement today, Mr. Kawana said the Zambia Police Service did not deploy or have a presence at the event.

He said instead, the organisers, Standing-in-the-Gap team, were advised by the police to reschedule their event due to security concerns stemming from two major national events that took place on the same night.

Mr. Kawana explained that the organisers collected the written response from the police on October 23 at midday and made an announcement to the congregants around 21:00 hours, informing them of the police advice and asking them to disperse peacefully, which they did.

The Permanent Secretary since stated it is, therefore, a total fabrication that police stormed the prayer event to disperse worshippers.

Mr. Kawana noted that the misinformation was generated by detractors of government to spread discontentment among citizens.

Mr. Kawana urged the public to disregard the false reports and appreciate the efforts of the police in ensuring security and safety for all citizens.

He further stated that the nation may wish to note that the Standing-in-the-Gap team collected the written response from the police on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at midday, after being verbally informed of the decision and advice the previous day.

"The Government is committed to maintaining peace and order, and calls upon citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities," Mr. Kawana said.
