UN VOTES TO ‘CORRECT’ WORLD MAP, PUTTING AFRICA’S TRUE SIZE ON DISPLAY

The world map may never look the same again.

The UN General Assembly has overwhelmingly backed a resolution calling for greater use of maps that accurately represent the size of continents-especially Africa, which has long been visually distorted by the centuries-old Mercator projection.

The resolution, sponsored by Togo, passed with 164 countries in favour, including France and the UK. The United States was the only country to vote against, while six abstained.

The Mercator map makes Greenland appear roughly comparable in size to Africa, despite Africa being about 14 times larger.

The campaign is pushing the Equal Earth projection, developed in 2018 to preserve the relative areas of continents more accurately. The African Union’s 54 member states adopted it earlier this year.

Togo’s Foreign Minister Robert Dussey summed up the campaign, saying, “A fair world begins with a fair map.”

Supporters argue that maps are not merely geographical tools-they shape how people perceive power, importance, resources, and opportunity. Critics, however, say the UN should be focusing on more pressing global problems.

The vote is non-binding, but it could influence the maps used by governments, schools, and institutions worldwide.

Africa was never small. The map just made it look that way.
