THE Ministry of Health has detected five new cases of mpox in Lusaka, Muchinga, and Western provinces in the past week, bringing the total number of recorded cases nationwide to 36.

Acting Minister of Health, Douglas Syakalima, provided the update during a press briefing yesterday, assuring the public that the government remains committed to swift case identification, treatment, and isolation to curb further transmission.

β€œIn the past week, we recorded five new cases, three in Lusaka, with one each from Bauleni, the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), and Matero; one in Isoka, Muchinga; and one in Lukulu, Western Province,” Syakalima stated.

Syakalima revealed that of the 36 total cases recorded since the outbreak last year, 20 have been in Lusaka, 10 on the Copperbelt, three in Muchinga, two in Western Province, and one in Central Province.

Encouragingly, the minister said 26 affected individuals have been successfully treated and discharged.

He said currently, nine active cases remain under monitoring.

β€œEight patients are in home isolation, three in Lusaka, three in the Copperbelt, one in Isoka, and one in Lukulu while one patient is under facility isolation in Lusaka,” he explained.

He noted that most new cases were not linked to previously confirmed cases and had no known travel history to affected areas, raising concerns about potential community transmission.

β€œWe are carrying out active case search in new districts reporting cases, that is Lukulu and Chinsali. Most of the identified cases were not linked to previously confirmed cases and neither did they have any travel history to affected areas,” Syakalima said.

In a more uplifting update, the Syakalima said Lusaka has not recorded any new cholera cases in the past five days and currently has no active cases.
