Ndola husband beaten to death over salary!

A 30-YEAR-OLD man of Nkwazi, Ndola, has died after allegedly being beaten by his 32-year-old wife for misusing
his salary.

Rozaria Nsengele is reported to have fought
with her husband, Geoffrey Katandula, last Monday between 15:30 hours and 22:00 hours, before the man later died after sustaining bruises on his neck and hands.

It is alleged that Ms Nsengele lied to the police that her husband died of a terminal illness, before a toxicology report revealed
otherwise.

An autopsy was conducted on the exhumed
body.

Copperbelt police commanding officer
Peacewell Mweemba said in a statement that on February 17, around 08:30 hours, Mr Katandula fought with his wife after being accused of squandering his salary.

He said the couple’s neighbour, Beatrice Mulenga, initially intervened, but the couple resumed fighting around 15:00 hours before being separated again.

“At 21:00 hours, Mrs Mulenga explained to
her husband what had transpired and how Mr
Katandula had locked himself alone inside the house.”

Mrs Mulenga’s husband, with the help of a Community Crime Prevention Unit officer,
forced their way into Mr Katandula’s house, only to find him dead.

THE Bank of Zambia has introduced a new family of Zambian currency.

https://www.facebook.com/100064560977290/posts/1060745112754178/

The new family of banknotes and coins will consist of six banknotes K500, K200, K100, K50, K20, and K10 and six coins, including K5, K2, K1, 50N, 10N, and 5N.

BOZ Governor Dr. Danny Kalyalya said the new currency will be launched on March 31, 2025.

He said the alpha code (ZMW), the numeric code (967), and the currency symbol (K) will remain unchanged, as will the value.

Dr Kalyalya said the design of the new currency draws inspiration from the country's rich heritage, featuring elements that celebrate Zambia’s unique flora, fauna, and breathtaking waterfalls.

“By incorporating these elements, the new currency not only honors our cultural heritage but also strengthens its role as a symbol of pride and unity for all Zambian citizens, as exemplified by our national motto, One Zambia, One Nation.

This initiative, which was approved by the Board in July 2021, reflects the Bank's commitment to providing currency that is secure, efficient, user-friendly, and well-suited for everyday transactions,” he said.

Dr Kalyalya said the new series represents a significant step forward, combining cutting-edge design with advanced security features to protect against counterfeiting and other threats to the integrity of the currency.

He added that the Minister of Finance and National Planning will soon issue a Statutory Instrument (SI) detailing the procedures for exchanging the old currency for the new series.

“The SI will also specify the exchange period as well as the designated exchange points across the country where the public can exchange their old currency for the new currency.

To facilitate this change, the Bank will launch a nationwide sensitization campaign to educate the public about the new currency so that everyone understands and becomes familiar with its features,” Dr Kalyalya said.

He encouraged members of the public to continue using the existing banknotes and coins, which remain legal tender until a specified time in the SI.

“We also call upon members of the public to embrace other available payment methods, such as digital financial services, as alternative means of making payments.

The Bank further urges the general public to remain calm and actively support the roll-out process. Your cooperation, as esteemed stakeholders, is a critical success factor for this extremely important initiative in our beloved country,” Dr Kalyalya said.

Additionally, the Governor apologized to the nation for what he described as the current poor state of banknotes.

“May I take this opportunity, on behalf of the Bank and indeed on my own behalf, to sincerely apologize for the current poor state of the banknotes. With the introduction of the new currency, this should soon be a thing of the past,” he said.

DEC ARRESTS TASILA ON MONEY LAUNDERING CHARGES

TASILA LUNGU, the Chawama Member of Parliament and former President Edgar Lungu’s daughter, has been arrested by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) and charged with money laundering and possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Tasila only returned home yesterday from the United States where she was on martenity leave, and indicated that she would avail herself before the DEC that had issued a red alert against her. She was arrested and released on bond after questioning.

According to the DEC, the property which is subject of the charges is a farm in Sinda, valued at approximately K8.8 million.

In September 2024, the Economic and Financial Crimes Court ordered the forfeiture of the farm to the state, citing a significant discrepancy between Tasila's known income and the property's value.

The court found that between 2015 and 2021, Tasila’s documented income totaled K154,200, which they said was insufficient to justify the acquisition and development of the farm.

On appeal, the Court of Appeal, in January 2025, granted a stay of ex*****on on the forfeiture order, allowing Tasila to retain the farm pending the outcome of her appeal.

CONTROVERSIAL Tiktoker, Why Me, real names, Francis Kapwepwe, was yesterday jailed 12 months imprisonment with hard labour for using hate speech online.

When punishing the convict, Livingstone resident magistrate Tabita Muleya noted that the offense the youth committed was very serious because it has potential to divide communities by inciting hatred.

Magistrate Muleya sentenced the convict to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour effective from the date of his arrest, April 2024.

Since the convict has been in detention from the time he was arrested, he has technically served the one year jail term and is free to go home anytime soon.

Last year in April, police arrested the accused of Obama Chelstone, Lusaka, and slapped him with two counts of hate speech and expressing contempt for persons based on race, tribe, or place of origin.

Allegations are that between 29 March 2024 and 6 April ,2024, Kapwepwe knowingly and unlawfully published a video on Facebook containing derogatory remarks directed at the Tonga-speaking people.

The words in issue were meant to incite hatred and ridicule based on tribe and place of origin.

In the second count,.Kapwepwe was accused of disseminating the same video on various online platforms, using a computer system to spread the offensive content.

He denied the allegations but was later found with a case to answer and placed on defence.

In his defence, the accused denied the allegations but after the court assessed the evidence, the netizen was found guilty.

"There is no doubt that it is Kapwepwe who appears in the video and that he is the one who actually produced and circulated it," Magistrate Muleya said.

The court convicted the accused in both counts.

Lead prosecutor in the case, Mabia Akamonwa, applied that the convict be treated as a second-time offender because it is not the first time he committed the crime.

But the defence urged the court to dismiss the application because the prosecution had not provided proof of his client's previous conviction.

Lawyer Anthony Bwalya contended that the prosecution has not adduced documentary evidence or prior records of conviction to support their claim that his client is a second offender.

The magistrate dismissed the State's application because there was no documentary proof of his previous conviction record.

Before being jailed, the defence pleaded for the court's leniency, saying the convict was remorseful.

"My client is remorseful for his actions and has vowed never to repeat such an offence. He is a married man with two young children and is also taking care of his sick mother," Mr Bwalya said.

Magistrate Muleya sentenced the convict to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour in both counts, effective from the date of his arrest, April 2024.

“Since the first count already carries a custodial sentence, I find no need to impose an additional fine. The convict will serve a total of 12 months from the date of arrest".

The 15-year-old suspect reportedly stabbed the prefect following a confrontation about why he had not participated in cleaning the school hall.

The victim sustained a deep wound to the stomach, extending to the intestines, with heavy bleeding from the wound.

Southern Province Commanding Officer Auxensio Daka confirmed that the incident occurred on February 2, this year.

Mr Daka said the matter was reported by the school headteacher to the police.

"On February 2, 2025, at 14:00 hours, all Grade 11 pupils were directed to clean the school hall. At 22:30 hours, the victim, a school hall usher, accompanied by other school prefects, followed the suspect to his dormitory to inquire why he did not participate in the cleaning," Mr Daka said.

He added that during the argument, the child in conflict with the law allegedly removed a knife from his pocket and stabbed the victim in the stomach.

Mr Daka said that the suspect later threw the knife into the grass within the School premises ,but some pupils searched for it, found it and handed it over to the school management.

'The victim was rushed to Chikuni Mission Hospital where a surgical operation was done. Later, the matter was reported to Chisekesi Police Post.

A medical report form was issued and Police visited the victim at Chikuni Mission Hospital where medical personnel described his condition as stable," Mr Daka said.
