While on patrol in Chipuka, Luangwa District, game ranger Mabel Shibata joined five male officers to contain a wounded buffalo, a dangerous mission that demanded both speed and precision.

As the buffalo charged, one officer stumbled and dropped his firearm. With the beast closing in, Shibata sprang into action. “I grabbed his weapon without hesitation. The buffalo was almost on top of him. I had seconds to decide,” she says. She fired 10 decisive shots, killing the buffalo and saving her colleague’s life.

In today’s edition of the Times of Zambia, read about Ms Shibata who has made it to the top in a male-dominated field. She is, currently, Zambia’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife area
warden for Katete, Vubwi, Chadiza, Chipata, Chipangali, Lumezi and Lundazi districts in Eastern Province.

FATAL ROAD ACCIDENT AT MUNALI HILLS CLAIMS LIFE OF NAMWALA WOMAN, OTHERS INJURED

A 46-year-old woman from Namwala, Tina Mukambulo, has died after sustaining a ruptured stomach following a road traffic accident at Munali Hills along the Great North Road.

Meanwhile, five other individuals involved in the accident are currently admitted and receiving treatment at Mazabuka General Hospital for serious injuries.

The incident occurred on 3rd July 2025, around 19:00 hours when a south-bound Marcopolo minibus driven by Albert Hanakamba, aged 24 years, from Monze, rolled backwards after he failed to control the vehicle while ascending a hill, hitting a water drainage.

Those receiving treatment include 35-year-old Maureen Mweenda from Chongwe, who sustained broken arms; Lovemore Kayayi, 41, from Namwala, who sustained cuts on the right leg; and Allan Buumba, aged 39, also from Namwala, who sustained a painful left hand.

Others are 32-year-old Onetty Mweemba from Lusaka, who sustained a cut on the forehead; and Winfrida Kaale, 36, of Bweengwa in Monze, who sustained a cut on the forehead, the left leg, and injuries to the left hand.

Southern Province Commissioner of Police, Auxensio Daka, notes that the driver escaped unhurt.

Govt moves to repatriate Lungu’s body, cites no burial wish in will!

The Zambian Government has filed an amended notice of motion in the Pretoria High Court, South Africa, seeking the repatriation and burial of former President Edgar Lungu in Zambia.

In its submission, the government argues that the late President Lungu did not specify in his will how or where he wished to be buried.

It further contends that, as a beneficiary under the Former Presidents’ Benefits Act, it should be presumed that he intended to be given a state funeral in accordance with Zambian customs and traditions.

The state maintains that Mr. Lungu’s acceptance of benefits under the Act should be interpreted as an expression of his burial wishes.

Additionally, the government argues that Mr. Lungu was never disqualified from receiving those benefits, as outlined in Section 5(2) of the Act. Instead, it explains that his entitlement was merely suspended when he re-entered active politics, and that suspension ceased upon his death.

As a result, the state asserts that it regained the right to provide a state funeral, fully funded and conducted in line with national customs and traditions.
