Episode 8: In The Dark

The lights were gone.
But the sound wasn't.

Click. Click.
Chains dragging on metal.

I couldn't see my own hands.
"Natasha?" I whispered.
No answer.

Another sounds. Footsteps. But not on the floor.
On the beds. One by one. Like someone was walking down the row.

Click. Bed 1.
Click. Bed 2.
Click. Bed 3.
Getting closer to "Banda, S."

My heart was In my throat. I pressed myself against the wall.
Then a voice. Low. Right next to my ear.
"You broke the rules, son."

Mr. Chanda.

I spun around but hit nothing but air.
"How are you -"
"Every bed has a microphone," he said.
"Every bed has a camera. Every bed has a choice."

A match flared.
His face appeared for 1 second In the dark.
Smiling.
Then he lit a single bulb hanging over my bed.

Just my bed.
The rest of the room stayed black.

I was sitting on It. I didn't remember sitting.
The chain that had been moving was now wrapped around my ankle. Loose. But there.

"You had 2 options," Mr. Chanda said, sitting on the bed across from me. "Be the jailer. Or be the prisoner.
"You let the boy go," he continued. "That means the bed stays empty. And an empty bed... Is bad for business."

He leaned forward.
"So we fill It. With you."

The door opened. Natasha Walk In.
But she wasn't free.
She had a key In her hand. And guard behind her.

She looked at me. Her eyes were wet.
"I'm sorry," she whispered. "They said If I didn't do It, they would bring my little brother here next."

She kneeled down.
Clicked the chains shut around my ankle.

It was cold.
Final.

Mr. Chanda stood up. "Welcome home, Mr. Banda. Your first shift as a prisoner starts now."
He walked to the wall and pressed the button.

The sliding wall opened.
But this time, It didn't reveal another room.

It revealed a camera.
A live stream.
Title at the top: "THE CYCLE - EPISODE 1"
Viewer count: 14,382

And In the chat, thousands of comments were already scrolling:
"Is this real??"
"New guy looks scared"
"Who's gonna break him first"

Mr. Chanda looked straight Into the camera.
"Welcome everyone. Tonight, we start fresh."

---

I thought I was In a test.
Then I thought I was In a trap.
Now I know the truth.

I'm In a show.
And 14,000 people are watching me chained to my bed.

---

The lights came on.
I was sitting on MY bed. Chained.
Natasha did It. "I'm sorry... It's my brother."

Then Mr. Chanda opened the wall.
It's wasn't a room.
It was a LIVESTREAM.

14,000 people are watching me right now.

Episode 7: Midnight

2:59 AM.
The house was silent expect for the hum of the CCTV.

Mr. Chanda was gone. "Your job now," he'd said before leaving. "Don't mess It up."

Natasha sat on the floor next to my bed.
Not chained anymore. But she wasn't leaving either.
"They watch every exit," she whispered. "If you run, they'll catch you. If you stay, you become him."

I was holding the key to the gun cabinet.
And a piece of paper.
The speech. Word for word.

>*"Pick It up. Shoot her... or I shoot you."*

My hands were shaking.

Then - car lights through the smoke window.
Tires on gravel.
The front door opened.

A boy walked In. 19, maybe 20. School backpack. Cheap shoes. Same look I had last week.
Scared. Desperate. Hopeful.

Two guards guided him down the hall and stopped at the black door.
One of them looked at me. "Your turn, Mr. Banda."

I opened the door.

The boy's eyes went wide. Smoke. Red lights. The metal bed.
"Where am I?" he asked.

Instead I said: "Run."

His face froze.
"What?"

"Run. Right now. Out of the window. There's a gap In the fence by the mango tree."
Natasha was already pulling at his arm.

The guards shouted. Footsteps.
Mr. Chanda's voice came through the speaker In the celling. Calm.
"Mr. Banda. You have 10 seconds to give the speech. Or we give It for you.

10... 9... 8...

The boy was hesitating at the window.
"Will they shoot me?"
"Not If you move," I said.

7... 6... 5...

Natasha pushed him through. He dropped Into the bushes outside.
I heard him running.

4... 3... 2...

The door behind me slammed open.
Mr. Chanda walked In. No gun this time.
Just disappointment.

He looked at the empty window. Then at me.
Then at Natasha.

"You just broke the cycle," he said quietly.
"Do you know what happens when you break the cycle, son?"

He walked to my bed. "Banda, S."
He ran his finger over the nameplate.
"Now there's no one to take your place."

He turned to me and smiled. But It wasn't the same smile.
"Congratulations. You're free to go."

My heart stopped.
"Really?"

"No," he said. "Because free people don't leave loose ends."

The lights cut out.
Total darkness.

And I heard the chains on *my* bed rattle.

---

I saved him.
But now there's no one to replace me.
And the chains on my bed just moved by themselves.

---

He told me: "Give the speech or we give It for you."
So I told the next boy: "Run."

He escaped through the window.
Mr. Chanda said "Congratulations. You're free to go."
Then the lights went out.
And I heard MY chains rattle.

Episode 6: The One Rule

The room was freezing.
Rows of metal beds stretched Into the dark. All empty. All chains bolted to the floor.

Except one.
"Banda, S."

My name.
My exact Initials.

Mr. Chanda didn't look at the beds. He looked at me.
"You did well," he said. "Most boys beg.
Most boys shoot. You chose option 3.
That's why you're here."

Natasha was rubbing her ankle behind us, free for the first time In months. But she wasn't running. She was staring at the bed with my name like she already knew what come next.

"What's the rule?" I asked. My mouth was dry.

Mr. Chanda walked to my bed. He ran his hand over the cold metal.
"The rule Is," he said, "everyone who passes... takes someone's place."

I frowned. "What do you mean?"

He pressed another button.

A screen on the wall lit up. CCTV footage.
It was this house. This room. 3 months ago.
A boy, my age, chained to *my* bed.
He looked scared. Just like I did.

Next clip: Mr. Chanda with the same gun.
Same speech.
"Shoot her...or I shoot you."
The boy turned the gun on him too.

Mr. Chanda smiled on the screen.
"Good. Very good. Welcome to the family business."

Then the screen went black.

When It came back on, the bed was empty. The boy was gone.
And Natasha was In his place. Chained.

My stomach dropped.
"No," I whispered. "You used me to replace him."

Mr. Chanda nodded. "You passed. That means he gets to leave. And you... you take his bed."
He pointed to the chains. "Until the next one passes."

Natasha grabbed my arm." Run," she said again. But this time her voice was different. Tired.
I've seen 4 of you come through that door. None of you ran fast enough."

Footsteps.
The main door behind us locked. Click.

Mr. Chanda tossed me a key. Not for the chains. For the gun cabinet.
"Your first job starts now," he said. "The next candidate arrive at midnight.
You're the one who gives the speech."

---

I thought I was the hero who saved her.
Turns out... I'm just next jailer.

And midnight Is In 3 hours.

---

He said "Everyone who passes takes someone's place."
I watched CCTV of the boy before me...
He turned the gun on him too. Then he disappeared.

Now I'm supposed to chain the next candidate at midnight.

Episode 5: The Choice

The gun was heavier than I expected.
Cold metal. Real.

Mr. Chanda didn't blink. "Pick It up, Mr. Banda. Shoot her... or I shoot you. "
His voice was calm. Like he was ordering tea.

The girl - Natasha - was shaking on the bed. Chains rattling.
"Don't," she whispered. "He'll kill you anyway. He killed 3 others before you."

3 others.
So this wasn't a test. This was a recruitment.

I looked at the gun. Then at her ankle.
Then at Mr. Chanda's face.
He wasn't a boss anymore. He was a monster who bought houses and hired boys to see who'd break first.

"Why me?" I asked. My voice cracked.
"Because you're poor, smart, and desperate," he said. "People like you follow rules... until they don't. I needed to know which one you are.

The smoke alarm kept screaming. The room was getting hard to breathe.

I raised the gun. My hand was shaking so bad I thought I'd drop It.
Natasha closed her eyes. " Just do It fast," I said. "You didn't say what happenes If I shoot you."

His smile vanished.

For 1 second, nobody moved. Nobody breathed

Then he laughed. Low. Quiet.
"Good," he said. "Very good. You're not like the others."

He dropped his gun on the floor.
"Congratulations, Mr. Banda. You passed the final test."

The fire alarm stopped. The smoke machine shut off.
Silence.

Natasha opened her eyes. "What... what just happened?"

Mr. Chanda picked up a remote from his pocket and pressed It.
The chain around her ankle unlocked.
Click.

He walked to her, kneeled down, and whispered something I couldn't hear.
She started crying. Not from fear. From relief.

He stood up, looked at me, and said:
"Welcome to the family business, son. But there's one rule you don't know yet..."

He walked to the wall and pressed a hidden button.
The whole back wall slid open.

Behind It... was another room.
Bigger. Colder.
And Inside, rows of metal beds.
All empty.
All with chains.

Except one.
It had a nameplate.
"Banda, S."

---

I thought I saved her.
I thought I passed the test.

But the room with my name on It means...
this was always meant for me.

Episode 4:

**What's behind the door**

I pushed.

The door didn't creak. It's didn't fight me. It just opened, like It was waiting.

Smoke hit my face first. Thick, hot, smelling like burnt paper and something metallic.
The fire alarm was screaming In my ears.

Then I saw her.

A girl. Maybe 19. Same age as Chipo.
She was chained to a metal bed frame In the corner. Not with handcuffs - with a thick chain around her ankle, locked to the floor.
Her mouth was covered with tape. Her eyes... she looked realized and terrified at the same time.

"No...don't touch me," she mumbled through the tape. "He said If anyone opens this door, he'll kill us both."

My blood went cold.
Mr. Chanda. The man who gave me the job. Who paid for transport. Who said "you're too sharp to waste."

I ran to her. Pulled the tape off.
"Can you walk?" I asked.
She shook her head. "Ankle. He broke It 3 months ago so I couldn't run."

The smoke was getting worse. Not from fire.
From a small machine In the corner, sparking and melting.
He staged It. The fire alarm, the smoke...It was a test.

And I failed.

Footsteps. Heavy. Behind me.

I turned around.
Mr. Chanda stood In the doorway. He wasn't supposed to be back for 4 more days.
He wasn't carrying a suitcase. He was carrying a gun.

"You opened It," he said quietly. Not angry. Disappointed.
"Rule was clear. Not even If the house Is on fire."

The girl grabbed my shirt. "Run," she whispered. "Please. Don't let him do to you what he did to me."

Mr. Chanda raised the gun.
"Congratulations, Mr. Banda," he said.
"You passed the test. But now you have a choice. Shoot her... or I shoot you."

------

I came here for a job.
Now I'm holding a gun, staring at a girl In chains, while the man I called "boss" tells me to kill her.

Episode 3: *The Choice*

Day 1 without Mr. Chanda.
The house was too big to feel empty. Every step echoed.

The staff called me "Sir" now. They brought me food, asked about schedules treated me like I belonged.
But all I could think about was the black door at the end of the hall.

No sound from It all day. I told myself I was being stupid. Rich people have weird rules. Maybe It was a wine cellar. Maybe files. Maybe nothing.

Night came.

2:14 AM.
I woke up to a sound. Not breathing this time. Not crying.

A faint beeping.
Then smoke.

I ran down the hall barefoot. The fire alarm was screaming. Red light flashing. And the smoke ... It was coming from under the black door.

My chest went cold.

Rule: *Never open It. Not even If the house Is on fire.

But If I didn't open It, the whole house could burn. Mr. Chanda's house. My job. Chipo's future.
If I did not open It... I was fired. Immediately. No explanation.

The smoke got thicker. The beeping got louder.

I grabbed the keys he gave me. My hand was shaking.
There were 4 keys on the ring. Only one fit the small keyhole on the black door.

I put the key In.

Turned It halfway.

Then stopped.

Because right as I was about to push the door...
I heard a voice from Inside.
Clear. Close.

"My name Is Natasha. Please don't leave me."

----

The key Is turned. The smoke Is real. A girl's voice Is calling my name.
Do I open It and lose the job... or leave her and follow the rule?

Episode 2:

*The House and The Rules *

I left home at 7 AM.
Not because It was far - Mr. Chanda's house was In Ibex Hill. I left early because I didn't trust myself to keep walking If I stopped to think .

The taxi dropped me at the gate. Gate. Not door. A gate with two guards, cameras, and a driveway that looked longer than my street.

I told myself: "Turn back. This Is weird."
But then I remembered Chipo's hands. Raw from carrying crates.
I walked In.

The house was quite. Too quite. White walls, marbles floors, air that smelled like money and lemon polish.
A maid led me to a study. No music. No Tv. Just a sounds of my own shoes.

Mr. Chanda was already there, sitting behind a desk bigger than my bed.
He didn't stand up. He just looked at me and said, "You're on time. Good."

He slid a contract across the desk.
"Personal assistant. Project coordinator.
Call It what you want. You'll manage my schedule, handle calls, check on sites. Salary Is 12,000 kwacha a month. Plus food, transport, accommodation If you need It. "

12,000.
My mom makes 1,800 selling vegetables.
I stared at the number like It might disappear.

"Why me?" I asked.
He leaned back. "Because you didn't beg. You told me the truth yesterday. Most people lie to get a chance. You were angry. I like angry. Angry people work harder. "

I signed. My hand shook.

Then he stood up and walk to the door.
"One thing before you start," he said.

He pointed down the hall. At the end, a black door. No handle on the outside, just a small keyhole.

"Tomorrow I'm traveling for 5 days," he said.
"While I'm gone, you're In charge of this house. The staff will listen to you. The house Is yours to run.

He paused.
"Except that door. Never open It. Not for noise. Not for curiosity. Not even If the house Is on fire. "

I frowned. "Why?"
"Because some things are safer closed, "he said.
"If you open It, you're fired. Immediately.
No explanation. Do you understand?"

I nodded.
But my stomach twisted.

He handed me a set of keys.
"Welcome to the job, Mr. Banda."

----

That night I didn't go home.
He told me to stay In the guest room "so I can learn the house."

I lay In the bed, staring at the ceiling, hearing every creak of the mansion.
At 2 AM, I heard It.

A sounds from behind the black door.
Low. Like someone breathing. Like someone crying.

My hand moved towards the light switch.
I almost got up.

Then I remembered: *If you open It, you're fired. Immediately. No explanation.*

I closed my eyes.
But I didn't sleep.

Tomorrow he leaves.
And I'm alone In the house with the black door.

Episode 1:

*The Opportunity*
*The Door I wasn't Supposed to Open**

I sat on the bench outside UNZA for the last time In my gown, holding a folder that felt heavier than my future.

9 distinctions. Best In my faculty.
My name was called, my mom screamed from the crowd In her chitenge, and for 10 minutes I believed life had changed.

It hadn't.

3 months later, that same folder was dog-eared from being pulled In and out of my backpack. 87 email sent. 3 replies. All the same: "Thank you for applying. We'll keep your CV on file.

Transaction: We won't.

My sister, Chipo, dropped out of grade 12 to sell tomatoes at Soweto Market so I could finish. She never said It like that.
She'd just come home with blistered hands and say, "Don't worry about food.
Just study.

I was tired of studying.
I was tired of being the "smart one" with nothing to show for It.

-----

That Tuesday I had 47 kwacha left.
Enough for bus fare and a packet of water. I went to CafΓ© Lusaka because they let you sit for hours If you order once. I ordered water. Sipped It like It was a meal.
Refreshed my email every 30 seconds.

"Mr. Chanda," the man said, sitting across from me without asking.

I looked up. 60s, maybe. Tailored suit, Rolex, eyes that didn't miss anything.

"You look like a man who's hungry for more than food, " he said.

I almost laughed. Then I saw he wasn't joking.

I told him everything. The grades. The rejections. How Chipo hadn't bought herself new shoes In 2 years. How my dad died when I was 14 and left us with debt. How I was about to start selling airtime and MTN bundles on Cairo Road because pride doesn't pay rent.

He didn't Interrupt. He just opened my folder, flipped through my transcript, my project, my recommendations.

For 2 minutes, the whole CafΓ© disappeared.

"You're sharp," he said finally. "Too sharp to waste on the street."

My heart started beating weird.

"Come to my house tomorrow. 9 AM sharp. I have a proposal for you. The pay will take care of your family. "

I nodded. I couldn't speak.

"One more thing," he added, standing up. Don't tell anyone where you're going. And don't be late. I hate wasted time. "

He left 500 kwacha on the table. "For transport. And lunch. A hungry man can't think straight. "

-----

I walked home like I was floating. For the first time In months, I didn't check If my phone had network. I didn't need to.

But as I reached our gate, my phone buzzed. Unknown number.

Massage: *"Be careful who opens doors for you. Not all opportunities are gifts."*

I stared at It for 5 minutes.

Chipo found me there. "Bro? You okay?"

I forced a smile. "I got a meeting tomorrow. With a rich man. "

Her face changed. "Rich men don't give free meetings,. Be careful. "Uchi

I nodded. But I already knew I was going.

How do you say no to the first person who sees you since graduated?

That night I didn't sleep. I kept thinking about that folder. About Chipo's hands.
About the word "proposal".

And about the way he said "don't tell anyone".

End of episode 1

Tomorrow I walk Into his house.
I don't know If I'm walking Into a job...or a trap.
