Two babies drown in Chipata shallow well!
Two babies have drowned in a shallow well while their respective mothers were collecting strawberry fruits in Chipata, Eastern province.
The incident happened yesterday, August 19, 2026, around 08 hours at Simon Jere village in Paramount Chief Mpezeni’s area.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer, Robertson Mweemba says this happened when the two mothers, who are sisters, went to a nearby garden to fetch for the fruits.
Mweemba has explained that while collecting the fruits, the 2 women left their babies on ground playing.
He has added that the two babies however crawled to a nearby well in the same garden and fell in.
Mweemba says when the two women later started looking for their babies, they discovered that the infants had fallen into the shallow well.
He has added that members of the community later helped to retrieve the bodies of the 2 babies.
