FDD's Bright Nundwe Secures Chawama Seat in Competitive By-Election

……as President Hakainde Hichilema congratulates FDD

By John Chola

The FDD Zambia (Forum for Democracy & Development) (FDD) has reclaimed the Chawama Constituency parliamentary seat, with its candidate, Mr. Bright Nundwe, emerging victorious in a by-election featuring a crowded field of nine contenders.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Returning Officer for Chawama, Mr. Lewis Lupando, formally declared the results today, confirming Mr. Nundwe's win with a total of 8,085 votes.

The candidate for the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), Mr. Morgan Muunda, secured second place with 6,542 votes, ensuring a tightly contested race.

In a statement acknowledging the outcome, President Hakainde Hichilema extended congratulations to the FDD and Mr. Nundwe.

"In a democracy, every election must ultimately produce one winner; yet its deeper purpose is to strengthen harmony, peace, and unity among all citizens," the President said, commending all participants and the people of Chawama for their commitment to the democratic process.

The full results as declared by the ECZ are as follows:

· Bright B. Nundwe (FDD): 8,085
· Morgan Muunda (UPND): 6,542
· Davison K. Mulenga (Citizens First - CF): 1,534
· George Mwenya (Independent): 466
· Elijah Siatwaambo (Independent): 428
· Mohammad Mutete (National Congress Party - NCP): 319
· Alfred M. Ndweni (Economic Progress Party for the People - EPPP): 239
· Ntazana M. Musukuma (Leadership Movement - LM): 100
· James Phiri (National Democratic Congress - NDC): 93

The Returning Officer noted that 290 ballot papers were rejected as invalid. The total number of votes cast in the constituency was 18,096.

President Hichilema also expressed appreciation to the Electoral Commission of Zambia and law enforcement agencies for conducting what he termed a "transparent, orderly, and secure election."

He stated that their professionalism allowed for the free and peaceful expression of the people's will.

The declaration was witnessed by polling agents, monitors, and observers from various organizations, including the FODEP, ZANIS, Operation Young Vote (OYV), AVAP, the Zambia Police, and the Citizens First party.

The Chawama seat fell vacant following the Speaker Nelly Muti's declaration after its siting MP, Tasila LUNGU absconded parliament due to bereavement of her father, former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu.

The FDD's victory marks a significant return to representation for the party in the constituency.

FDD held the Chawama Constituency with Geoffrey Samukonga as MP between 2000 to 2006.

Veteran Broadcaster Kenneth Maduma Passes Away, Leaving Legacy of Integrity and Excellence

The Zambian media fraternity is in mourning following the passing of veteran broadcaster and iconic journalist, Mr. Kenneth Maduma, whose distinguished career and profound influence spanned decades.

The Media Liaison Committee (MLC) confirmed the sad news in a statement issued by its Chairperson, Mr. Henry Kabwe, on December 15, 2025.

Mr. Maduma was a towering figure in Zambian broadcasting, best known for his tenures at the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) and later, Radio Phoenix.

His deep baritone voice and serious demeanour became synonymous with substantive journalism, as he engaged presidents and ministers across multiple administrations—from UNIP and MMD to the PF government.

“Mr. Maduma’s probing interview style and masterful news-reading made him a familiar and trusted voice in households across Zambia,” the MLC statement read. “Even today, his voice remains the signature tune for the ‘One Zambia, One Nation’ slogan heard on national broadcasts.”

Kabwe notes that after retiring from ZNBC, Maduma continued to shape public discourse as one of the pioneering presenters of Radio Phoenix’s influential programme, Let the People Talk.

Beyond the studio, he served the nation as a Human Rights Commissioner and later as Deputy High Commissioner to Egypt, before retiring to his farm in Chibombo.

Kabwe addds that in the newsroom, Maduma wull be remembered not only for his professionalism but for his humility and dedication to mentoring young journalists.

“He generously shared his expertise with upcoming journalists, guiding them toward professionalism, ethics, and excellence in broadcasting,” Kabwe noted.

Reflecting on Mr. Maduma’s immense contribution, fellow broadcaster John Chola, who has together with Mr Maduma presented programmes such as Face the Media and Let the People Talk, emphasised the enduring relevance of his example.

“Mr. Maduma was a pillar of our profession,” stated Mr. Chola. “For practicing broadcasters of today and tomorrow, his life is a clarion call to emulate his unwavering commitment to professionalism, ethical rigor, deeply researched work, and flawless ex*****on. That is the standard he set, and that is the legacy we must strive to uphold.”

The MLC celebrated Mr. Maduma as a journalist who “embodied integrity, depth, and excellence,” whose legacy “sets a standard for all media practitioners.”

Condolences have been extended to his wife, children, and the entire family.

Hamba Kahle, Baba Maduma. Rest in Peace.

BREAKING:

Constitutional Amendment Clears Major Hurdle, Sparks Sharp Critique

The Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Bill No. 7 of 2025 has just passed its crucial second reading in the National Assembly.

The vote was decisive, with 131 MPs voting in favour and only 2 against.
Given the current composition of the House, this wide margin indicates strong cross-party support, extending well beyond the ruling UPND's 97 members.

The bill now moves to the next stage of the legislative process.

Meanwhile, governance activist Laura Miti writes:

"President Hakainde Hichilema has chosen to write his name on the side of dishonourable constitutional making history.

The arrogance displayed on Bill 7 is exactly the one that has put government after government in trouble with Zambians... asking citizens - so what can you do about it?

The people have no idea what those changes are. In short - only those who hold power will decide. WE THE PEOPLE will discover on the day of the vote what is in the Bill😏!

Essentially this government wasted a whole lot of money on the Mushabati Committee, to pretend to consult the public... Government is acting like God when we pray.

The hubris displayed suggests that enough MPs have been garnered to pass a constitution amendment cooked in private.

In this Bill 7 process, President Hichilema joins this unhappy list:
1972- One party state
1996- FTJ amendments
2001- Third Term Attempt
2019- Bill 10
2025 - Bill 7.

I guess it's all worth anything to him."

“Imposed by Force and Fraud”: Mbeki Foundation Declares Tanzania Lacks Legitimate Government After Disputed Poll

By John Chola

The Thabo Mbeki Foundation has issued a hard-hitting statement declaring that the United Republic of Tanzania “currently lacks a legitimate government”.

This follows what it describes as a violently tainted and fraud-ridden general election held on 29 October 2025.

In one of the strongest regional condemnations yet of Tanzania’s electoral process, the Foundation said the current administration had been “imposed upon the people through a combination of force and fraudulent means,” citing a cascade of irregularities, deadly violence, and the damning verdicts of both SADC and African Union observer missions.

The statement, signed by Thabo Mbeki Foundation CEO Max Boqwana, expressed deep condolences to families of those killed in post-election unrest and called for an urgent national reset.

Observers Reject Tanzania’s Poll as Unfree, Unfair
Election Observer Missions from SADC and the AU – normally cautious in their language – jointly concluded that the polls fell “far short” of regional and international democratic standards.

The SADC mission declared categorically that Tanzanian voters “were unable to freely express their democratic will.”

Both observer teams dismissed the presidential and parliamentary results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as inconsistent with the actual will of the electorate.

“These distressing determinations,” the Foundation said, force a painful truth: the outcomes “are not a true reflection of the will of the Tanzanian people.”

Claims of Violence, Abductions and Intimidation
The Foundation highlighted “persistent, disturbing reports” of systematic violence targeting opponents of the long-ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), including abductions and murders.

The statement describes the environment surrounding the vote as one of fear, coercion and lethal repression.

It added that the scale of violence “unleashed against citizens” had shaken the region, and called for speedy recovery for those injured in the unrest.

A Distressed Nation, a Tarnished Legacy
The Foundation, which maintains a deep historical and ideological link to Tanzania, invoked the moral legacy of the late President Julius Kambarage Nyerere.

It warned that the country’s current trajectory “besmirches his memory” and undermines the image of a nation long viewed as a pillar of African liberation and stability.

“During our Africa Day celebrations earlier this year in Morogoro and Dar es Salaam, we sensed that the nation was not at ease with itself,” the statement read.

Call for Honest National Dialogue
While acknowledging growing internal calls for reconciliation, the Mbeki Foundation insisted that healing is impossible without a candid national reckoning.

“A polarised society can only unite around justice, healing and national unity through an honest, inclusive, and sovereign national dialogue,” the statement asserts.

Tanzanians, it said, must collectively answer two historic questions: What went wrong, and what must be done to put the beloved country back on course?

A Continental Appeal
With the gravity of its tone, the statement amounts to a continental call to action.

It urges Tanzanians to restore legitimacy, stability and unity—not only for themselves, but also in honour of Nyerere and in solidarity with fellow Africans.

“It is time for an urgent new beginning,” the Foundation concluded.
