5 Zambians Benefit From JICA Grants

By White Luhanga

Five Zambian entrepreneurs who each won a 20,000 US-dollar grant in equipment support and a business trip to Japan under the Joint Empowerment Programme -JEP- have returned to Zambia from Japan.

The initiative between the Zambian Government and the Japan International Cooperation Agency -JICA- saw the selection of the five entrepreneurs out of 512 applicants after a national pitch contest held in February this year.

Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development Permanent Secretary, SUBETA MUTELO, led the delegation to Japan from May 9th to 17th, 2025.

Speaking on arrival at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, Ms. MUTELO said government remains committed to empowering and linking Small and Medium Enterprises -SMEs to business and finance opportunities.

Ms. MUTELO added that the five will be part of a team from her ministry that trains SMEs in capacity-building, having been trained in Japan.

And one of the beneficiaries, Chief Executive Officer of Ironside, RUTH CHANDE thanked JICA and the government, saying she learned a lot in Japan, including the importance of resilience in business.

Another beneficiary, NORMAN CHABU, Managing Director of Succulent Brands, said one of the key takeaways was the importance of having a long-term vision for a business.

Joe Biden diagnosed with 'aggressive' prostate cancer

(BBC) Former US President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, a statement from his office said on Sunday.

Biden, 82, was diagnosed on Friday after he saw a doctor last week for urinary symptoms.

The cancer is a more aggressive form of the disease, characterised by a Gleason score of 9 out of 10. This means his illness is classified as "high-grade" and that the cancer cells could spread quickly, according to Cancer Research UK.

Biden and his family are said to be reviewing treatment options. The former president's office added that the cancer is hormone-sensitive, meaning it can likely be managed.

After news broke of his diagnosis, the former president received support from both sides of the aisle.

President Donald Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social that he and First Lady Melania Trump "are saddened to hear about Joe Biden's recent medical diagnosis."

"We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family," he said, referring to former First Lady Jill Biden. "We wish Joe a fast and successful recovery."

Democratic House Representative Ro Khanna wrote on X that he is praying for Biden and his family. "He and Jill have always been fighters," he said. "I am confident they will meet this challenge with grit and grace."

The news comes nearly a year after the former president was forced to drop out of the 2024 US presidential election over concerns about his health and age. He is the oldest person to hold the office in US history.

Biden, then the Democratic nominee vying for re-election, faced mounting criticism of his poor performance in a June televised debate against Republican nominee and current president Donald Trump. He was replaced as the Democratic candidate by his vice president Kamala Harris.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer affecting men, behind skin cancer, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that 13 out of every 100 men will develop prostate cancer at some point in their lives.

Age is the most common risk factor, the CDC says.
