Financial Insight was on the ground for a media tour hosted by the Energy Regulation Board- ERB, sensitising the public on fuel marking and why it matters for every litre sold in Zambia.

Fuel marking has run since 2018 to detect adulteration and protect product quality, using a biochemical marker dosed into fuel and monitored throughout the supply chain. Retail market compliance has climbed from 79% in 2018 to 96% today.

The briefing featured Mr Chasuzga Mtawale, Acting Director of Petroleum and Gas, who explained the purpose of the exercise. Ms Namukolo Munyeme Kasumpa, Public Relations Manager, spoke on enforcement, licensee obligations, and the ERB's ongoing ground presence. Mr Ezra Siamasumo, National Coordinator for Fuel Marking and Monitoring, walked through the certification process and noted the marker is tailored for different consumer categories, including mines and other large users. Mr Matongo, Site Supervisor at Petro Z Limited, the contractor conducting the marking exercise, took media through the on-site process.

Thirty years ago Zambia opened the doors of the Lusaka Securities Exchange Plc with a single listing, Chilanga Cement, and a market run almost entirely on paper certificates. Today over a million Zambians hold investments through the exchange, market capitalisation to GDP has climbed from roughly 1% to 16%, and 4 counters (currently) have crossed the billion dollar valuation mark.

This documentary traces that journey from the shelved Stock Exchange Act of 1970, through the privatisation era of the early 1990s, to the birth of the Securities and Exchange Commission under the Securities Act of 1993 and the launch of LuSE in February 1994.

Featuring reflections from those who built the market from two desks and no secretary at the Bank of Zambia, including Securities and Exchange Commission - SEC Zambia Chief Executive Officer Mr Philip Chitalu, the film charts the rise of green bonds, REITs, mobile trading platforms and the Capital Markets Master Plan now guiding the next chapter of growth.

Zambiaโ€™s securities market continued to develop in the second quarter of 2026, supported by improving macroeconomic conditions, sustained investor participation and ongoing market-development initiatives. The quarter recorded developments across collective investment schemes, equities, bonds, green finance, financial inclusion, investor education and investor protection.

Collective Investment Schemes continued to expand, with assets under management rising 3.75% to K3.86 billion, while the number of investors increased 3.54% to 1.53 million. Locally managed assets accounted for 86.96% of total AUM.

Equity market performance softened, with the LuSE All Share Index declining 5.51% to 25,784.88 points. Market capitalisation, including Shoprite, fell from K341.87 billion to K334.12 billion, following price declines in 12 of the 23 listed equities. ZAFFICO was the strongest quarterly gainer, rising 80.6%, while Airtel Networks Zambia Plc reached a US$1 billion market capitalisation.

Bond market activity moderated, with outstanding corporate bonds declining 4.4% to K4.04 billion, largely reflecting the appreciation of the Kwacha against the US dollar. Government bond secondary-market trading also declined, with nominal trades falling 7% to K30.1 billion and market-value trades down 9% to K31.5 billion.

Under the Capital Markets Master Plan, six of 10 key performance indicators had recorded positive progress by the end of June. Green finance activity also advanced, including the operationalisation of the Zambia Green Finance Taxonomy, development of green-finance tools and guidance, and continued work on green bonds and sustainable finance.

The Commission also continued its focus on financial inclusion, investor education and investor protection, including townhall meetings, provincial capital markets debates, participation in CAMINEX, public warnings on suspected fraudulent activities and investor education through the Money Mysteries programme.

The Q2 2026 securities market performance was presented by Mr Mateyo Lungu, Director for Policy & Market Development at the Securities and Exchange Commission - SEC Zambia, on behalf of the CEO, while Ms Sitali Namunji Mwala, Product Development and Market Research Officer, set the stage for the briefing.

Mining Indaba 2027 (MI27) is strengthening its focus on communities by amplifying their voices and perspectives across the programme through Community Voices. The programme creates opportunities for communities to engage directly with mining companies, investors, policymakers and industry leaders on the issues shaping their futures.

โ€œPartnership is only meaningful when it changes outcomes,โ€ says Mining Indaba Industry Director Laura Nicholson. โ€œWe are putting that principle into practice by creating spaces where communities are not simply consulted, but can challenge assumptions, share expertise and contribute to solutions. The Community Rights Immersive Workshop and dedicated Artisanal Small-Scale Mining (ASM) Day do exactly that.โ€

The approach reflects MI27โ€™s theme, โ€œStronger Together: Partnerships in Practiceโ€, which challenges the industry to turn commitments into practical collaboration and measurable outcomes.

For communities, meaningful participation can influence how mining projects address employment, skills development, local economic opportunities, environmental impacts, livelihoods and decision-making. Community Voices is designed to bring these perspectives directly into the conversations shaping the future of mining.
