At the Financial Insight Mining Exploration Workshop held at AfricaWorks, Agora Village in Lusaka, the conversation went beyond mineral discoveries, focusing instead on how Zambia can sustainably finance its exploration ambitions and attract strategic investors into the sector.

Moderated by Sibeso Mofya, the panel brought together key voices shaping the mining value chain: Sitwala Mulonda from KoBold Metals Zambia, Lesley Mulwanda (Geologist), Hope Ndao from Mulenga Mundashi Legal Practitioners, and Andrew Chinambu from APO Group. Together, they unpacked the realities of exploration financing, legal frameworks, and storytelling in building investor confidence.

The dialogue made one thing clear โ€” unlocking Zambiaโ€™s mineral future demands collaboration, trust, and a unified ecosystem between explorers, financiers, and policymakers. A big thank you to AfricaWorks for partnering with Financial Insight Zambia to host this timely discussion.

A Rising Star Driving Zambiaโ€™s Next Mining Frontier with Technology

Last week at the Mingomba Suppliers and Services Fair in Chililabombwe, Financial Insightโ€™s Mpandakilima Derby Hante sat down with Kobold Metals CEO, Mfikeyi Makayi, for an exclusive conversation on the companyโ€™s transformative approach to mining. Makayi explained that the inaugural fair was designed to align local, regional, and international suppliers with KoBoldโ€™s project timeline as it transitions from exploration to mine development.

With shaft sinking preparations underway, the event created a platform for collaboration and transparency โ€” ensuring that the supply chain is ready for the next phase of Zambiaโ€™s newest copper project.

Mfikeyi emphasized that their scientific precision has led to defining a high-grade copper resource ready for feasibility and engineering development. The initiative, she said, embodies how innovation and strategic foresight can fast-track Zambiaโ€™s participation in the global energy transition.

On the evolving local content landscape, Mfikeyi welcomed the new law as a timely step toward inclusion and capacity-building among Zambian suppliers. She underscored the importance of meeting standards on quality, price, and timely delivery, while also adding a โ€œfourth layerโ€ โ€” customer service โ€” as a hallmark of business excellence. Calling for collaboration across the value chain, Makayi urged SMEs and large contractors alike to build ethical, compliant, and socially responsible businesses that strengthen local economies and ensure that Zambians share in the nationโ€™s mining growth story.

In accordance with the Lusaka Securities Exchange Plc (โ€œLuSEโ€) Listings Requirements, the Board of Directors of Zambia Sugar PLC (โ€œthe Companyโ€) hereby advises the Shareholders of the Company that the Earnings Per Share for the financial year ended 31 August 2025 is expected to be approximately 515.8 ngwee per share compared to 649.8 ngwee for the financial year ended 31st August 2024.

The 21% decline in Earnings Per Share is primarily attributable to a 48% increase in production costs and a 12% reduction in sugar production volumes. The cost pressures stemmed from inflationary and currencyโ€“ related impacts on key input costs, which significantly elevated operational expenditure. Lower production volumes, linked to the residual effects of the 2023/24 drought, further constrained cost absorption. These headwinds, however, were partially offset by an 18% increase in revenue, which was driven by enhanced value capture across both domestic and export market segments.

The Company expects its results for the financial year ended 31st August2025 to be released on SENS and published in the local press on or about Tuesday In this Financial Insight exclusive, Founder and CEO Mwelwa Kenneth Chibesakunda speaks with Mr. Huang Yaochi, CEO of Wonderful Group, about the bold $150 million partnership with ABSA Bank Zambia that is reshaping the nationโ€™s fertilizer industry. The investment, channelled into the United Capital Fertilizer (UCF) project, marks a defining moment in Zambiaโ€™s push toward fertilizer self-sufficiency and agricultural resilience.

From a vision sparked by persistent forex shortages to a fully operational NPK and Urea plant, Wonderful Group has transformed a national challenge into an export opportunity. Fertilizer prices have dropped from over $1,800 to $1,350 per ton, saving Zambia an estimated $150 million in import costs, while new exports to Botswana, Tanzania, Malawi, Zimbabwe, and the DRC are bringing in fresh forex inflows.

Backed by ABSAโ€™s trust-driven financing, including $150 million in project and working capital support, this collaboration highlights the power of strategic banking partnerships in driving industrial transformation. Itโ€™s a story of finance fueling innovation, and a model for how local manufacturing can anchor Zambiaโ€™s economic growth.

In this latest Financial Insight conversation, Founder and CEO Mwelwa Kenneth Chibesakunda MBA sits down with Mr. Huang Yaochi, the Chief Executive Officer of Wonderful Group Zambia, to unpack the companyโ€™s journey and growing footprint in Zambiaโ€™s industrial landscape. Established in 2011 as a holding entity, Wonderful Group oversees five subsidiaries namely; Wonderful Industry Company Ltd, Boffar Machinery & Equipment LTD, United Capital Fertilizer LTD, Marcopolo Tiles Company Ltd, and Mupika Sericulture & Silk Farm Zambia, which operates a 6,400-hectare silk farm in Mpika.

Mr. Huang explains that Wonderful Industry, the groupโ€™s flagship arm, leads the region in packaging solutions, supplying fertilizer, feed, and cement companies across Southern Africa. With a balanced split between local and export markets, the firmโ€™s packaging products are used by nearly all major mining houses in Zambia, the DRC, and beyond.

Highlighting Zambiaโ€™s strategic location, Mr. Huang shares that four of the groupโ€™s five subsidiaries are export-oriented, serving markets in Malawi, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, and the DRC. From packaging to agriculture and fertilizer production, Wonderful Group continues to position Zambia as a manufacturing and export hub in the region.

Proflight Zambia has announced a new seasonal air route connecting Victoria Falls and the Okavango Delta, which is set to launch in May 2026.
The announcement was made during an interview between Jon Howell, the CEO and Founder of AviaDev, and Keira Langford-Johnson, Business Development Director at Proflight Zambia.

The partnership, which began with discussions at AviaDev and progressed through meetings with the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana_CAAB, involved detailed analysis of route numbers, pitch presentations, follow-up meetings, and site visits that spanned multiple industry events.

Starting May 2026, the airline will operate three flights per week between Livingston and Maun, running seasonally from May through October each year.

The route links two of Africa's most iconic tourism destinations, with onward connections to Mfuwe, Lower Zambezi, South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi National Park, creating expanded access to Botswana's wilderness areas.

The conference room at Africa Works buzzed with anticipation on October 30th as entrepreneurs took their positions before a panel of seasoned business angels. This was no ordinary Thursday gathering. It marked another installment of the Zambia Business Angels Network (ZBAN) monthly pitch day, where capital meets creativity and innovators compete for funding that could transform their ventures.

Think Dragons Den but rooted in Zambian soil. ZBAN has carved out the last Thursday of every month as its designated pitch day, creating a predictable rhythm for entrepreneurs seeking early-stage investment. Business angels are private individuals investing personal capital alongside their expertise, this involves evaluating pitches with a practiced eye that has seen countless ventures rise and fall.

October's session featured ventures from the agriculture and energy sectors. The timing proves significant. Zambia faces persistent challenges in both domains, making innovation essential to economic stability. Entrepreneurs presented solutions addressing gaps through different approaches, each defending their business models before experienced capital providers.

The pitch day format strips away the usual barriers between capital and enterprise. Entrepreneurs deliver focused presentations detailing their market opportunities and growth trajectories. Angels probe weak points, challenge assumptions, and assess management capability. The exchanges are direct, sometimes uncomfortable, but always purposeful.

For entrepreneurs, these monthly gatherings represent more than funding opportunities. They provide exposure to networks, strategic guidance, and the discipline of defending business models before experienced investors. Whether ventures secure capital or not, the pitch process itself sharpens their approach.

ZBAN evaluates businesses under five years old that demonstrate strong management teams and clear job creation potential. The network continues to expand its portfolio, backing ventures from sustainable enterprises to educational technology platforms and agricultural AI solutions.

The next pitch day awaits on the calendar's final Thursday, when another cohort of entrepreneurs will make their case.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Zambia continues to play a vital role in strengthening economic ties between the United States and Zambia. Established in 2011, AmCham Zambia has grown into an influential bilateral chamber that serves American citizens, American-controlled companies operating in Zambia, and Zambian businesses engaged in trade with the United States.

The chamber operates through five core pillars that guide its work: Advocacy, Investments, Business Linkages, Networking, and Thought Leadership. Through these pillars, AmCham Zambia addresses critical issues facing its members, from immigration and work permit challenges to taxation matters and investment licensing. The organization maintains strong relationships with the U.S. Embassy, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and USAID, positioning itself as a bridge between American and Zambian business interests.

On 30 October 2025, AmCham Zambia held its Annual General Meeting at AfricaWorks, Agora Village in Lusaka. The AGM represents a significant moment in the chamber's calendar, bringing together members to review progress, approve financial reports, ratify leadership, and chart the course for the year ahead. This gathering provided members with an opportunity to engage directly with the chamber's leadership and fellow business professionals who share a commitment to advancing bilateral trade and investment.

Throughout the year, AmCham Zambia maintains an active events calendar that extends beyond the formal AGM. The chamber hosts regular networking events designed to foster business connections outside traditional office settings. Two flagship events anchor the annual calendar: a well-attended golf tournament each September and a Thanksgiving dinner in November. These occasions bring together an exclusive network of established business professionals united by their interest in developing ideas and expertise that contribute to business growth.

The chamber also prioritizes professional development through its speaker series, which features talks from industry leaders. These monthly sessions, typically followed by networking breakfasts or cocktails, provide members with access to thought leadership on relevant commercial topics. AmCham Zambia recognizes that knowledge sharing and direct engagement with policymakers are essential components of creating an environment where businesses can thrive.

For American and Zambian companies seeking to expand their operations or enter new markets, AmCham Zambia offers advisory services, commercial recommendations, and business linkages. The chamber's membership includes successful companies across a wide array of industries, creating opportunities for business-to-business meetings in Zambia, the United States, and throughout Africa.

The chamber's advocacy work remains fundamental to its mission. Acting as a voice for the business community, AmCham Zambia works to resolve issues that disrupt normal business operations. With relationships cultivated across different sectors and strong ties to both U.S. and Zambian government officials, the chamber is well-positioned to facilitate dialogue and address concerns affecting trade and commerce between the two nations.

As AmCham Zambia continues its work in fostering bilateral economic relations, events like the Annual General Meeting serve as important touchpoints for members to connect, reflect on achievements, and contribute to shaping the chamber's strategic direction. The night before the final interviews, something interesting happens. Finalists gather at a prestigious venueโ€”this year, the InterContinental Hotelโ€” for drinks, conversation, and a chance to be seen as more than their transcripts.

The Rhodes Scholarship Finalists Cocktail is a tradition that's held its place in the selection process for decades. While it's less formal than the interviews that follow, it's far from insignificant. Judges mingle with candidates over hors d'oeuvres, observing qualities that don't show up on paper: how finalists engage in conversation, their social intelligence, their wit, the way they carry themselves in a room full of accomplished people.

The world the scholars will step intoโ€”demands academic brilliance and the ability to connect, to think on their feet in social settings, to make meaningful interactions with people from different backgrounds and perspectives. The cocktail event offers judges a window into exactly that.

Dressed in cocktail attire, finalists navigate a high-class ambiance that mirrors the social environment they'll encounter at Oxford. For some, it's where they truly come alive. For others, it's a reminder that leadership is about how you relate to people.

While the event carries less weight than it once did, it remains influential. It's a space where personality matters as much as credentials, where a genuine conversation can leave as strong an impression as a polished essay. And for finalists who've spent months preparing for this moment, it's also a chance to exhale, connect with fellow candidates, and remember why they applied in the first place.

The Rhodes Scholarship has always been about building a community of leaders. The cocktail reception, informal as it may seem, is where that community begins to take shape.
