CONSTRUCTION OF NKHANYU FOOTBRIGE IN LUMEZI COMPLETED, EASING MOVEMENT OF THE PEOPLE

By Staff Repoter

Lumezi Town Council has completed the construction of Nkhanyu footbridge across the Lusangazi river in Diwa ward using funding from the 2024 roads grant, thereby integrating the the rural part of the district into the national road network connectivity.

The footbridge is now providing safe and improved access to schools and other essential services for the locals which was previously a challenge especially in the rain season where school going children were unable to cross the Lusangazi river.

Last year, the Local Authority engaged Bithigh Construction to work on this critical crossing point using funding from the roads grant.

The funding is as a result of devolution of motor vehicle licensing from the Ministry of Transport and Logistics to Local Authorities, inline with Cabinet Circular no. 2 of 2023.

And residents are elated with the completion of construction works of the Nkhanyu footbridge realized from decentralization through the devolution of functions and funding from Central Government to the Local Authority.

Moses Zulu, a teacher at Nkhanyu Primary School located near the banks of Lukusuzi River explains that since 2018 when he was deployed for duty, learners were not reporting for classes particularly between January and March.

Mr. Zulu says learners usually reported for class in the second term of each year due to challenges in crossing the Lukususuzi river which would easily flood after a downpour while others had to sleep at the school as they were unable to walk back home.

The school teacher is optimistic that completion of construction works on the footbridge will not only benefit the learners with improved school attendance but the entire community who have to cross the river to access essential commodities and services.

“We really appreciate the government for the footbridge which is helping the community to cross the river. This facility has never existed but government has now constructed an important crossing point which will help a lot of people and save lives” Mr. Zulu said.

And another resident of the area, Joseph Lungu says it was a challenge to cross the Lukusuzi river in the rain season but the construction of the footbridge has eased movement of the people, a move which has excited many people.

Meanwhile, Bertha Banda, a grade 9 pupil at Nkhanhyu Pimary School explains that it was impossible to cross the Lukusuzi river in the rain season but construction of the bridge will improve her school attendance through out the year.

Rachael Jere another pupil at the same school says each time the learners found the river flooded, their only option was to return home thereby missing out on lessons due to challenges in crossing the flooded river.

GRADING OF TOWNSHIP ROADS In CHIPATA CITYUNDER THE 2025 CDF ALLOCATION COMMENCE

By Staff Repoter

Chipata City Council has commenced the grading of township roads in Kapata ward of Chipata Central Constituency, under the 2025 Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

The move is aimed at improving accessibility and easing transportation challenges in the constituency.

Speaking during a site inspection in East Rise, Chipata Central Constituency CDF committee chairperson Patrick Daka, reaffirmed government’s commitment to infrastructure development at community level.

Mr. Daka said the 2025 CDF allocation is already being put to use in a way that directly benefits the people.

He added that Improved roads will not only enhance mobility but also open up economic opportunities within the communities.

The project has also drawn praise from local leaders including Mr. Kalulu Mwenge, chairperson of Kapata Ward Development Committee, who emphasized the importance of community involvement in the planning process.

‘’Residents actively participated in identifying which roads should be prioritized in the area and that has made this initiative more impactful. We are excited to see real development taking shape,’’ Mr. Mwenge.
For residents like Lameck Mwale, a long time East Rise resident, the grading work comes as a long-awaited relief.

‘’During the rainy season, these roads become impassable. Now, with proper graded roads, we will be moving freely, children can get to school on time, and even ambulances services can reach homes quickly.’’ Mr. Mwale said.

The works will cover a total of 90.97 km at a total cost of K3, 278,00 for all the 5 wards of Chipata Central constituency.

CDF continues to play a key role in grassroots development, and Chipata City Council has pledged to maintain transparency and efficiency in implementing all 2025 CDF funded projects.
