TURNING UNZA INTO A POLITICAL BATTLEFIELD IS A SENSELESS AND SELFISH DECISION

We note with profound concern and immense disappointment that, in his quest for favorable opinion and praise singing, Mr Hakainde Hichilema and the UPND have decided to turn our universities and colleges into political breeding grounds.

This development is both unfortunate and unacceptable. We therefore, urge Zambians, particularly the academia and the masses at large to take keen interest in what is being done, especially at the University of Zambia (UNZA).

While Mr. Hichilema and the UPND are at liberty to recruit and mobilize the young people for political support, it must never be done in a manner that is destructive, divisive, and detrimental to the integrity and well being of our higher institutions of learning. We say this because we have noticed a very disturbing and retrogressive pattern forming around this issue.

UNZA and indeed all institutions of higher education in this country, must not be reduced to arenas of cheap caderism and partisan politics. It must be recognized that these are spaces for intellectual development, knowledge sharing, research, and the pursuit of national progress, and not political patronage or political influence.

We appeal to the student population at UNZA and elsewhere in the country not to allow themselves to be exploited for temporary gains or cheap handouts. We urge them to be cognizant of the fact that they are the real custodians of Zambia’s future. It is therefore, their duty to ensure that they uphold the dignity, decorum and credibility of these institutions. Otherwise, if they compromise or fail to respect their obligations in this regard, they risk being judged harshly by posterity.

It is also high time Mr. Hichilema and the UPND realized that state interference in student politics risks undermining the credibility and ability of universities to serve their true purpose. History has shown that when political agendas overshadow educational objectives, institutions of higher learning tend to lose focus on their core mandate, which is academic inquiry, student growth and national service.

Further, it’s common knowledge that any government’s heavy-handed involvement in student politics may backfire, thereby generating tension, division and instability within the academic community. Universities and other higher learning institution need be protected from politicization, as their role is to nurture knowledge, innovation and leadership for the nation’s development.

We therefore call upon the UPND to desist from dragging universities and higher learning institutions into partisan politics, and we urge students to safeguard their institutions from being turned into political barracks. This is dangerous and potentially disturbing for students, in relation to the university calendar, and should not be tolerated.

GOVERNMENT ASSURES FARMERS OF TIMELY MAIZE PURCHASES THROUGH FRA

By Martin Phiri,Muchinga Province

Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Elvis Nkandu, has assured farmers that the government has set aside sufficient funds for the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to purchase maize across the country.

Speaking during a visit to the FRA depot in Mantapala, Mr. Nkandu addressed concerns about delayed payments, confirming that farmers who have already supplied maize have been paid. He emphasized that selling maize to the FRA is critical for safeguarding national food security, as the agency plays a central role in storage and supply during times of crisis.

The Minister also commended small-scale farmers for their significant contribution to last season’s maize production, noting their vital role in ensuring stable national grain reserves.

For the 2025 marketing season, Mr. Nkandu announced that the government has pegged the purchase price at ZMW 340 per 50-kilogram bag, a competitive rate that will apply at over 1,400 FRA satellite depots countrywide.

He encouraged farmers to take advantage of this opportunity, reiterating the government’s commitment to strengthening agricultural development and supporting farmers’ livelihoods.

By Staff Repoter

POLICE in Chipata have arrested a 38-year old accountant in connection with the gruesome murder of a Rhoda Munkombwe, a 25-year-old woman he was seen sneak into his house, by the landlord.

The incident is believed to have occurred between Thursday night and the early hours of today and was reported to Police around 05:00 hours, by the victim’s father, Terry Munkombwe.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba reveals to TV Yatu that the victim, Rodah Munkombwe of Kapata area, was murdered at plot number 5390B in Kanjala, Chipata district.

Details of the matter are that Edward Mwanamuchele, an accountant at Horizon Company, allegedly used a metal bar to inflict a deep cut on the head of the victim, leaving her with multiple injuries on her legs and bruises across her body.

“According to preliminary investigations, Mwanamuchele had been living alone after chasing his wife on August 5 this year when he discovered she had misused rent money. On August 28, around 19:00 hours, he was seen entering his home with a woman later identified as Rodah.

“His landlord, Moonga Ngobeka, aged 33, told police he later heard disturbing noise from the house around 23:30 hours. When he confronted the suspect to open the door, Mwanamuchele claimed he had misplaced the keys,” Mweemba said.

Ngobeka then used a spare key to open the door and was shocked to find a woman lying unconscious in a pool of blood near the door.

The landlord acted immediately by calling an ambulance, which rushed the victim to Chipata Central Hospital, but she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

“When Ngobeka returned from the hospital, he found the suspect mopping blood in the sitting room. Alarmed by the scene, he alerted police, who rushed to the house and managed to apprehend Mwanamuchele as he allegedly attempted to flee”, Mweemba said.

Officers found the house in disarray, with blood stains in the sitting room, bathroom, and bedroom.

Mweemba confirmed the arrest, saying, “The suspect has been taken into custody and is assisting police with investigations. The body of the deceased has been deposited in the Chipata Central Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem examination. We will provide further details as investigations progress.”

FIRE INCIDENT INVOLVING A POWER TOOLS PUBLIC SERVICE BUS.

Kabangwe Traffic Police received a case of fire involving a public service bus which occurred today, August 29, 2025 at about 04:00 hours, along the Great North Road opposite Goodman Hardware in Kabangwe area.

Involved was Bellington Mwape, aged 38 of Zanimuone area, who was driving a Zhongtong bus registration number AIB 8569, the property of Power Tools Company.

Brief facts are that the driver was moving from Intercity Bus Terminus, Lusaka, to Kitwe with an undisclosed number of passengers on board. Upon reaching opposite Chaisa Compound along Great North Road, the driver smelt a strange smell and saw smoke coming from the engine. He immediately stopped the bus at Chaisa Bus Stop to inspect the fault and instructed all passengers to disembark for their safety.

Thereafter, as he proceeded towards the garage to have the vehicle attended to, the bus suddenly caught fire due to a suspected mechanical fault involving burning airbags. The driver jumped off the moving bus, which later rolled to the eastern side of the road and was completely gutted by fire.

No injuries have been reported, and all passengers were evacuated safely. The Zambia Police Service commends the driver for his alertness and quick action in ensuring that all passengers were out of danger before the fire engulfed the vehicle.

Investigations into the exact cause of the fire are underway.
