OVERTURNING OF CDF-PROCURED AMBULANCE FOR MAPATIZYA CONSTITUENCY.

The Department of Health Services at Zimba Town Council wishes to inform the people of Mapatizya Constituency and the general public about an incident involving a district ambulance procured under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

On the night of 22nd January 2026, the ambulance was responding to a maternal referral emergency from Kamukkeza Rural Health Centre located 185 kilometers from the Central business district.

While en route, the ambulance attempted to cross a stream along the route. Due to heavy rainfall, water levels had risen significantly, and the strong current caused the ambulance to be swept off the crossing and overturned into the stream.

While attempting to cross the flooded stream under muddy and slippery conditions, water levels rose rapidly, leading to the unfortunate incident.

The Council is pleased to inform the public that no casualties were recorded during the incident and
the ambulance was later recovered and able to move a distance of 175 kilometres from the scene to Zimba Mission Hospital.

However, the vehicle will undergo a comprehensive mechanical inspection and servicing to ensure it is fully roadworthy before being redeployed. The ambulance is covered under a one-year insurance policy, valid up to December 2026.

As a local authority, we deeply regret this unfortunate incident and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring the safety of health personnel, patients, and government assets, particularly when responding to emergencies in hard-to-reach areas during the rainy season.
