Fellow Citizens at home and abroad,

I was personally elated yesterday to learn from a news item citing Qatar's Prime Minister, Sheikh ‘Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani’ stating that a ‘ceasefire has been reached between Israel and Hamas of Palestine’.

This is probably the best news the world has heard in the New year–a perfect New Year present to all of us peace loving global citizens’.

This is because, if the peace deal holds–which is what we all pray for–it could end the senseless and needless deaths of Palestinians and Israelis alike and restore political stability, humanity and sanity in the Middle East.
In this 15 months of active fighting and war, we have witnessed the death of more than 46,006 Palestinians and 109,378 wounded mostly women and children.

Conversly, this war has killed more than 1,200 Israelis and wounded over 5,431 when Hamas launched its attacks on Israeli soil on 7th October 2023.
Therefore, we must applaud and give credit to all peace negotiators from the state of Qatar, the Republic of Egypt, the United States of America, the Palestinian Authority and of course Israelis that have spent sleepless nights trying to find a solution to end this carnage.

This is an important milestone for all affected conflict parties and a commendable achievement for peace in the world! This is an important reminder that all differences among human beings or countries can be resolved through dialogue.

Conflict resolution as well as settlement through diplomacy around a table of mediation is always the best option than taking up arms, igniting war and causing bloodshed.

As you are all aware, there are no winners in any war: it is a zero sum game.

Therefore, I urge you all to join hands and pray for the people of Palestine and Israel that this time around, gunfire ceases, PEACE PREVAILS, and the conflict does not recur. It is also my prayer that the peace momentum in Israel and Palestine can extend to Sudan, Somalia, the DRC and other parts of the world ridden with conflict.

MAY THE ISRAEL-PALESTINE PEACE DEAL HOLD!

Francis Kapwepwe, also known as Why Me, was in court today at the Livingstone Magistrate Court, where he denied hate speech charges. His case has been adjourned to January 29 for mention and February 7, 2025 for judgement. This comes after the Livingstone magistrate, Tabita Muleya, found him with a case to answer on counts of hate speech and expressing hatred, and put him on defense.

Fellow Citizens.

Today is a sad day in the history of our country as we witness yet again, another attempt by the President Hakainde Hichilema’s government to alter the course of democracy and good governance in our country to reverse another Constitutional Court decision.

You may all recall that in 2016 under my administration, Mr Hichilema and others challenged through the Concourt, a decision that allowed my cabinet ministers to remain in government and on payroll after the dissolution of parliament. Their argument was that the current constitution of Zambia requires legislators to relinquish their government positions as cabinet and provincial ministers once parliament is dissolved three months before the next Presidential and parliamentary elections.

In 2020, the Concourt ruled in their favour and we all complied and respected the decision.
Consequently, all Ministers in my cabinet were compelled to refund the government all emoluments they received. The court emphasized that the law for ministers to leave government positions after the dissolution of the house is meant to ensure a fair political playing field for candidates within and outside parliament in the next national election.

Today, however, we have sadly read about a Lusaka lawyer challenging the Concourt decision and asking the same court to quash their earlier decision of 2020 on the same matter. From this president, this gesture is both shocking, annoying and disappointing for every Zambian because it is another high profiled assault of our judiciary, democracy and constitutionalism.

Ladies and gentlemen, WAKE UP and see that what happened on 10th December 2024 when the newly re-constituted Concourt took away my right to recontest the 2026 elections is about to recur through this Hichilema’s sponsored proxy. The appetite by President HH to defile the constitution, r**e the judiciary and undermine our hard earned democracy is worrying and alarming!

I am appealing to every Zambian to stand up and be counted for once: employ all legal means possible including courts and peaceful demonstrations to stop this bogus court petition from the UPND executive because allowing it will undermine the principle of separation of powers and instantly kill our democracy.

I warned on 10th December. 2024 that “the decision to bar me then transcended the fate of Edgar Chagwa Lungu. It speaks to the erosion of judicial independence, the weaknesses of our democratic foundations, and the weaponization of our institutions for short term gains”.

Fellow Zambians, the country suffers and democracy dies when you choose to remain silent in the face of grave injustice.

CHILUFYA TAYALI FACES LIFE IN PRISON IN MUTINY CASE

Chilufya Tayali, leader of the Economic and Equity Party (EEP), is set to learn his fate today as Magistrate Kelvin Soma delivers judgment in a case where Tayali is accused of inciting mútǐny. However, he will not be present in court, having been out of the country for months, thereby escaping trial.

The case against him stems from a Facebook post alleged to have been made between March 1 and April 4, 2022, in which he attempted to persuade members of the dèfense førce to abandon their duty and allegiânce to the President. Tayali pleaded not guilty to the charges, which are contrary to Section 48, Subsection A of the Penal Code Chapter 47 of the Laws of Zambia.

If found guilty, he faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, as stipulated by the Penal Code Act. This law considers mǔtǐny, or inciting others to commit mǔtǐny, a felony punishable by life imprisonment.

The case has been ongoing since 2022, with several adjournments, including one in May 2023 due to the absence of witnesses. Today's judgment will bring some closure to the matter, although Tayali's absence may complicate the proceedings.
