Tembwe–Kambombo, Chama, Zambia.
In a bold demonstration of how tourism can anchor Zambia’s economic transformation, Kazumba Safaris has reaffirmed its strong support for President Hakainde Hichilema’s ambition to double the national economy from $30 billion to between $60 and $80 billion in the next five years and make the nation, economic independent. The company is positioning conservation-based tourism as a key engine for rural development, job creation and sustainable growth.
This commitment was underscored through the official handover of critical conservation infrastructure and logistical support to the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) and Community Resource Boards (CRBs) of Tembwe and Kambombo Chiefdoms.
The comprehensive handover package includes 14 newly built ranger houses (delivered in partnership with MAZA Transfrontier Conservation Area) 2 fully equipped office blocks, 65 bicycles, 65 mattresses, uniforms for 42 scouts and six months’ worth of patrol rations, a major boost for law enforcement and community-based conservation efforts in one of Zambia’s most strategically important Game Management Areas.
Since taking over the management of the Tembwe–Kambombo concession in 2019, Kazumba Safaris has invested heavily in reviving a once-depleted ecosystem. The company has funded salaries for DNPW and CRB scouts, drilled more than 20 boreholes for clean water, relocated over 200 families away from high human–wildlife conflict zones, rehabilitated critical access roads, and consistently supported field operations with bicycles, uniforms, allowances and other welfare incentives.
These efforts have yielded tangible results: wildlife populations are rebounding, patrol coverage is now systematic and technology-informed and surrounding communities are beginning to reap economic benefits through improved infrastructure, employment and tourism-linked livelihoods.
Speaking during the ceremony, the DNPW Director, Mr Dominic Chiinda, praised the partnership as a model of how the private sector can drive conservation outcomes while aligning with national development goals. “Kazumba’s approach shows that strategic investments in conservation are not just about protecting nature, they are about unlocking economic opportunities and building resilient rural economies,” he said.
Kazumba Safaris Director, Habib Patel emphasized that the handover forms part of a long-term strategy to transform Tembwe–Kambombo into a thriving conservation economy.
“True conservation goes beyond protecting wildlife, it’s about restoring dignity, creating opportunity and ensuring that communities thrive when conservation thrives,” he stated.
This initiative is aligned with the New Dawn government’s wider tourism and conservation agenda, a critical pillar of Zambia’s Vision 2030 economic plan. By building strong partnerships with the government and communities, Kazumba Safaris is not only protecting wildlife but also laying the foundation for tourism-led growth that supports President Hichilema’s vision of a modern, diversified economy.
