From Nurse to Business Mogul: Royalty Set to Mentor Fellow Nurses on Building Successful Businesses
AFTER spending more than seven years in government service as a nurse, Royalty Make Up chief executive officer Sarah Mako, popularly known as Royalty chose to trade the hospital ward for the beauty industry, turning her talent for transforming faces from Mr Ibu to Beyoncé into a thriving business empire.
Her talent has since grown into four successful business ventures, creating employment for more than 40 people.
Now, Royalty is looking to share her entrepreneurial journey with fellow nurses, encouraging them to explore business opportunities and increase their income while still serving in the civil service.
At the upcoming Nurses and Midwives Indaba, scheduled for Livingstone from October 20 to 22, 2026, Royalty will speak on entrepreneurship and how nurses can build businesses alongside their professional careers.
She believes professional qualifications should not limit people's ambitions or prevent them from pursuing their talents.
“I will be speaking all things entrepreneurship. You can still be a nurse and own a business. Our qualifications should not limit how far we should go in life. As a nurse, you can still make a good entrepreneur,” she said.
Royalty's message is informed by her own experience of balancing nursing with a growing makeup business before eventually resigning to pursue entrepreneurship full time.
Her business interests now include a makeup and hair studio, a barbershop, a bridal store, a nail section and a shop selling her branded makeup products, alongside property investments.
The guest of honour at the Indaba will be Health Minister Professor Roma Chilengi.
